Sat next to a local one of those on a bus the other week.
Well there is your problem right there! If you use Peckham Chauffeurs (Bus drivers) for your transport you are bound to catch all sorts of nasty things from the assembled masses. I've even had to ban the staff from going on public transport less they bring those nasty bugs or smells onto the estate.

Is anyone going to reVEAL the lucky bassist who got this gig?
-
As with any bass, just make sure it is set up right to get the best out of it. Neck truss rod, action, pickup height, intonation and off you go! If you are not sure about it go to the Fender website and download the bass owners manual, it has all the details and how to make the adjustments. I guess Westone many have the same available. Cheers, Rich

Always work making an appointment with Andy Baxter if you are shopping in the capital - better selection and generally lower prices for better quality gear than any place on Denmark St in my opinion. £6k for a '66P - having a laugh. I'd want John Paul Jones in the hard case for that sort of money! Cheers, Rich

I'd just take off the pick guard and the offending but of bent tin will reveal itself. Bend back with your finger so it grips the jack when inserted and put the pick guard back on. A few mins job and easily done. My personal opinion is that the 1/4" jack is the single worst piece of design on an electric guitar or bass. All it takes is you or someone else stepping on your cable and voila - bad contact time. Cheers, Rich

What is the plan for body and neck finishing and getting the rest of the black off the neck? EMG PJ's - on my shopping list too so I'm watching this thread to see how it all comes together. Cheers, Rich

As a nod to these guys I spent half an hour practicing today with octave, distortion and chorus all turned on. Certainly fills the room and creates a big sound. Note sure how it will go down at a blues jam though! Cheers, Rich

Are you saying you can tell where something was printed by the size of the card by eye? Amazing. FB and twitter only work if you actually keep them up to date and current. As soon as it is on a card you are committed. I don't use either. If you want to give updates you have a website so just use that.

String anchor makes no difference to neck truss rod, it sees the same tension regardless of which end of the string the tension is adjusted from. If a separate piece of wood the density may make a bit of difference, but can't see it making that much difference. The sound and harmonics happen between the saddles and nut, not between nut and tuners. It will change the balance of course, and be dependent on how well you anchor both ends, but if done well it should not change the tone.
Quite apart from any useful advice you get here, go to the Basses For sale sub-forum and stick '£300' in the search box. Pulls up a really mixed bag of stuff
It is a shame the forum does not have the function to search that section by inputting a max price - it would prove mighty useful for people searching on a budget instead of trawling pages of stuff out of range. Cheers, Rich

I use vistaprint for my business cards, I just make a PDF file in photoshop and upload that. Just make sure you choose the top spec/thickness cards as the cheapo ones are like paper. Colour is good, B&W cards also look cheap so avoid them. I personally (not music - engineering, but you are giving an image) include the following info: Name and qualifications Job title, in your case perhaps Session Bassist and Teacher? Address - I never trust anyone or any website not prepared to reveal their place if business, even if it is home Phone, landline AND mobile of poss Website and email address - nothing poncy like "", just "" is fine A picture, bass clef or some other such image to match your website. Cheers, Rich

Fret buzz and truss rod having opposite effect
Diablo replied to ape's topic in Repairs and Technical
The Fender setup guide for truss rod is to put a capo on the first fret, then depress the lowest string (E for 4, B for 5) at the last fret and then measure the gap between the string and the 7th fret. Should be 12-14 thou, about 0.35mm, a thick business card, or the like. If the string touches the 7th fret you need have too much backbow and need to slacken the truss rod, if you have a wide gap you tighten the truss rod to being the neck backwards. Before adjusting the rod make sure you drop off the string tension, adjust rod, retune, then check 7th fret gap again. Remove capo then set saddle height at 3/32" (2.5mm) between strings and fret at the 17th fret. If you cannot get this right you need to shim the neck. In this case set saddle heights at mid adjustment and shim as required, so at least you have some saddle adjustment for the future without reshimming again. Set pickup heights to spec (see manual) and then intonation and at least you should have a base setup to then play about with to suit your style. Cheers, Rich -
Uptown Up, Uptown Down, fills, turnarounds, Messin With The Kid, Strange Brew. Blues all the way this week, bit of theory, lots of 12 bar, learning the patterns to go up or down to the IV and V'ths and mixing those fellas up. A year ago I didn't know what a I-IV-V was (although I was playing them without knowing...) so really enjoying more of this to allow a bit of improv to thicken out some songs with. Cheers, Rich

Don't get me wrong, I am in no way questioning his skill or right to do it - that was not what I said. Maybe your ears or speakers are more tuned than mine, but to me it just sounded like a distorted lead.

Pardon my ignorance, but the video makes me feel nauseous as it never holds a shot for more than half a second. Someone got a bit too busy on the edit button I feel. Anyway, it moves to quick for me to see, is he playing chords on the bass or single notes and using the effects to beef it up? Can't help thinking someone should buy him a strat for his next Birthday... if you want to play lead then why not play lead on a lead guitar? Its a bit like trying to play trumpet on a tuba to me. Very skilful, but ultimately a bit pointless. Cheers, Rich

Song suggestions for a 6 string newbie to jam along to
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
He does have RS2014, but we both agreed to give up on it. We tried to work out a few songs on the rhythm but there are huge errors in the software. For instance the chord names it shows up do not always match the finger positions it is displaying, and in turn those finger positions are not the same as the ones in the chord workbook, which are again different to the ones in his written notes from his teacher (which are correct from comparing online stuff) - so what on earth do you play? The difficulty also jumps from single root notes to 4 finger chords in just one step, so it just confused more than it helped. I'll take all the above posted info and go at this again.... I sure wish I'd learned at his age. Cheers, Rich -

Song suggestions for a 6 string newbie to jam along to
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
At 11 years old, is your son really into The Beatles, Knocking on Heaven's door and Smoke on the water? Blues? No disrespect but if you think he's losing interest, it may be because of the stuff he's learning. I assume he's taking lessons at school or from a private teacher. Sounds like he's being taught fairly easy numbers that are simply of an era that suits his teacher. There's loads of more modern stuff he can learn with just a few basic chords like "Use somebody", Chasing cars, Perfect, Price-tag. None of them current but still 40 years later than Knocking on Heaven's door and, they're all easy 3 or 4 chord jobs.
Private lessons, but now you mention it the teacher is about 60 years old, so of that era rather than this I suppose. I can't play 6 string so I don't know which chords are easy to change between, and which songs don't have insane chord changes every note, hence the question. He listens to CCR, AC/DC, Little Barrie, and that blasted Deep Purple song that gets played 10 times a day every day. I'll lookup the suggestions, and CLTCL which I play on bass anyway, just never really listened to the guitar part to see how easy/hard it was running through the D-G-C-G with the Bb-C-D turnaround. Cheers, Rich
