Wouldn't it be cheaper to get the amp in the combo looked at first? Did you like the sound you were getting from the combo? Might be a simple fix (even an internal fuse perhaps, unless you saw the smoke demon).
Ah, I was not so clear on that. It still works, but smells like burning electrical devise. I never really liked the sound so much, it sounded "twangy" if that is the technical term. Not juicy lows, just not-very-nice sounding mids and highs.

The amp in my Laney RB7 combo (300w, 2x10) looks like it has gone west. Rather than buy an amp and a couple of separate cabs, I thought well I in effect already have one 2x10 in a cab already. But I cannot find any info from Laney about what the speaker configuration is regarding impedance. So the modders among you, is it quite feasible to buy an amp (~500w), an 8 ohm cab, and then rewire my RB7 speakers into a jack or a speakon plug in the cab then connect that into the amp too? I figure it is, but I've not dismantled my RB7 to see if the existing speakers are in series or parallel, how they are wired into the amp, and what impedance they have. If this is clearly a really silly idea I won't embark further! Seems a bit daft to buy a 2x10 cab if I already have one. Cheers, Rich

One year of playing review. Thinking if giving up!
Well just to let you know I've given myself a shake and spent a few hours playing. I made a little tune that I actually really like. And I've discovered I can play some songs without looking at the fret board which I never knew I could do. Also I've convinced a lass I'm dating to buy a guitar lol so that if she learns a little bit we can play together. Now I need to convince someone to buy some drums and there I will of formed my own band lol. So I'm going to try and carry on. And try accept certain things. Thank you all for the time to comment. I shall try not to be such a baby in future.
Well give the lass a treat and go find some live music tonight! Mustang (heavy rock/metal) are that the Railway Tavern in Darlo, but if that is not your bag then the Link magazine (free PDF download here) http://www.cultfound.org/thelink.htm lists loads of folk/ RnB gigs in the area, there are maybe 20 on tonight within a half hour drive. I find getting out and watching other bands helps me too as I can watch and learn from them, and sometimes sit there thinking "well I can play that at least as well!" Cheers, Rich -
far cheaper pastime of bass playing
Well, that depends... I saw the ZXRR and figured bikes were in there somewhere! However when guitar acquisition syndrome kicks in for some nice vintage stuff, and big amps and tube amplifiers take your fancy, it can soon cost the same. The only difference being you don't often throw basses and amps down the road at 100mph then watch them roll themselves into a ball of mixed metals! Welcome... Cheers, Rich

The wall - I guess we all hit it sometimes, perhaps to be honest I'm there right now. Tried to learn some songs that were beyond me, spent 20 hours on one and still could not get the fill/solo section into my head. After playing nothing but rock for the last few years I've just bought the Hal Leonard Blues Bass book and I'm going to drift into that and try to learn more roots blues bass, fills, endings etc so I can improv a bit more. A change is a good as a rest as they say. Where up north are you? I'm off to an open mic at the Forum in in Darlington tonight. I found my last band that way, actually got up and did a bass solo in the interval, nothing fancy, then got talking at at the bar afterwards. Cheers, Rich -
Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl for a gig a week Friday. Tricky little fella, taking some burning into my brain especially the timings. Sounds great when you get it right, just need to get it right more often
Put plainly, if you don't think the deal is right for you , don't buy it. No one will force you, and there is always( always) another deal that comes along afterwards.
Very true, what one person would pay a grand for would be another persons firewood - perceived worth is so subjective, especially for items that are not off the shelf and in current production, be it a TV, bass or piece of furniture. Cheers, Rich

Standing/sitting gets the base neck plate around your belly button so maybe use that as an initial guide? Adjust up and down a bit to suit your arm length, Yorkshire being short and Neanderthal being on the long side. Also depends on bass weight and balance - what are you playing? Cheers Rich

Did it work out....?

Does anybody else find that, the best bass......
I enjoy all my basses, even more so when listening to other talented people playing them.
snap! I sometime try to get others to play or sound check mine so I can actually hear what it sounds like without a drummer blasting next to me. Half the time I end up "feeling" the sound through my belly from the bass body or through my legs when standing in front of the amp rather than actually hearing it. Cheers, Rich -
Rocksmith 2014 - how to get the most out of it
Diablo replied to ParrotDye's topic in General Discussion
I looked at Mary Jane's Last Dance again and I can't find any missing notes so I feel you're mistaken there Rich. I took some video of me working through each phrase in turn; here. Skip to 10:30 for the summary screen
I can't see the video as it is set as private. There are (were the last time I bothered to fight with RS2014) 2 notes missing, one on each of the last bar of the 2nd and 3rd chorus if I remember. I'm not in the business of spending half an hour playing and doing a vid etc just to prove my point though. It was in Score Attack - if you play in LAS it does not show up. I will refer you back to my point about a Tascam and Hal Leonard though - you would be a lot further forward now if you'd spent your money on those instead of DLC. RS can be fun, but it does not teach you how to play, it is like GT5 or GT6 for driving. You might be a hero in a virtual world but you'd die at a live gig. Cheers, Rich -
Rocksmith 2014 - how to get the most out of it
Diablo replied to ParrotDye's topic in General Discussion
There is one huge elephant in the room you don't touch on at all - the tuning. RS1 made you check tuning after every menu/song change which too ages. The "fix" for this was to make the tuner so incredibly sensitive, and to list songs in alternate, slightly off, and drop tuning that you just spend your life tuning the bass instead of playing. It was completely unnecessary for them to do that, at least the slightly off should have been normalised to 440. Your comments about the 2deliberate mistakes" are hugely frustrating when you try to 100% a song, play every note and still get a miss. Now when you go through and listen you can find these, add them in, and get 100%. Mary Janes Last Dance is a fine example of this, two notes are missing from the highway. I also found the arcade in 2014 a farce - well it is. Overall I have RS1 and 2, and to be honest I spend a bit of time on 1, none on 2, and most of my time with a Tascam, UG tabs & Hal Leonard books which is by far a better tool for learning than anything Ubisoft wish to claim. For some reason watching notes plough past you on a screen, in my experience, does not burn them into your brain like an MP3 track and written notes on paper. If you are learning songs for gigging RS does just not work for me. The other issue is the songs. RS1 songs were a good mix, but the on-disc songs for 2014 are, in my opinion, pants or at least 90% of them are. Obscure fillers and tat. They saved all the decent stuff for downloadable content which means you get fleeced every week for a year if you want them, so that's another £100-150 if you buy them all. For that you can get a Tascam and half a dozen Hal Leonard books and after 12 months I know which will teach you more. My last point is all the software bugs and Ubisofts inability to fix them. Just look at the Rocksmith forums on Ubisoft for endless lists of over-moderated issues, DLC not being available in certain regions, auto-logins not working, lack of career path (I personally liked that in 2012 - why did they remove it?) and all that means I don't think I've logged in for 3 months. My call would be to buy a cheap version (ebay, second hand shops etc) of RS2012, that would be worth the spend. Forget 2014 it is a pain to use. Cheers, Rich -
I think you are right with that theory. Any pub that takes care to select good hand pulls that punters like to drink will bring in people looking for more than a really cheap beer (working mens / cons club for that) or fancy alcopop type stuff. It means they know the market, their customer base, and take time to get it right. The other comment about toilets really strikes a chord. I have a friend with a pretty good restaurant in London, and he says that the toilets, cellars and kitchens are one of the same in any establishment. If they cannot be bothered to clean and maintain the toilets (the bits the punters see) then you can be sure they are not cleaning the bits they can't see! Toilets=cellars=kitchens, and from my experiences I think it is generally true. Cheers, Rich

Here are some simple staples of the rock covers circuit: Dakota (Stereophonics) Learning to Fly (Foo's) Blitzkreig Bop (only 4 notes in the whole song!) Teenage Kicks (4 notes plus 1 passing note) Any blues standard - just learn the standard A-D-E 12 bar and you've got it, stuff like Johnny B Goode, Route 66 etc you can get away with playing the same bassline for any of them, and stick in variations/passing/walking as you feel more confident playing them. Wow, even an octave up occasionally! Cheers, Rich

Need A New Computer or Tablet for Music Room, recommendations?
Diablo replied to bagsieblue's topic in General Discussion
If I didn't have a touchscreen I would prefer Win7 though as they tiles are quick and handy sometimes but on a non-touch laptop they are a chore to use.
Just to be clear, my comments refer to non touchscreen use, and Windows 8 with a keyboard and mouse is hopeless IMHO. It is for tablets and touchscreens, which if you actually work on a machine (spreadsheets, word processing, email etc) rather than just surf the net, a touchscreen is as much use as a hog roast at a bar mitzvah. Windows 8 is a hog roast. Cheers, Rich -

Diablo replied to bagsieblue's topic in General Discussion
I've been a PC person since day 1 and have hated apple because of their firm belief anyone not using an apple product was inferior. The one thing that has really changed my mind recently is Windows 8, which for tablets seems fine, but on a desktop it is hopeless. That single reason will mean my next laptop and desktop will probably be a Mac. I am also getting more and more frustrated with the browser wars and plug-ins that just seem to get more and more unstable with windows. Chrome, Firefox and IE all seem to be trying to make people use only their browser, meaning for good web function you have to install at least 2 different browsers. This forum posting area is one fine example..... it just does not work in the main editing mode. Cheers, Rich -
cheers chaps, looks like a ZoomHD might be on the shopping list. I've just posted up a link in the gig section from a FlipHD recording I did last week: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/231806-the-john-waters-experience-diablo/ At the gig it was commented by one person (luddite) that the bass was too loud, but even listening to that vid with headphones and the bass EQ'ed up I can hardly hear it, hence my quest for a better camera/sound combo. I don't really have the time or will to start recording separate tracks and EQ then mixing them, it more for the YT kind of thing. I also accept the visual receiver thingy on the FLip is knackered hence a supposedly HD recording is so poor in quality. Cheers, Rich

Fri 28th March - I need an Rythym & Blues / Rock covers band
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
Got another half dozen knock-backs tonight from bands already booked. Really struggling now, I've tried every rock/RnB band from onthecasemusic and other than 2 non replies every other band is already booked. Does anyone know of other cover-band websites covering the North East...? Cheers, Rich -
First live gig with the JWE with me as a bassist - a few mistakes but all part of learning, right? This was Friday 7th March. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWHZzo8WtC0 All constructive comments welcome! There is also a guest spot in the middle from me playing "The Thrill Is Gone" with another group called the "Corner Boys". Cheers, Rich

Cheers for the link, I actually emailed them yesterday but no reply yet. I'm really struggling, must have contacted half a dozen yesterday and all came back to say they are booked except the BF's who have not responded. I would never had thought it could be this hard! Cheers, Rich -
Now all the pre-orders are done the remaining stock can be purchased here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/231785-guitar-thumbfinger-rests-now-available/ Cheers, Rich
Just given me an idea - have a 3 necked guitar, bass, fret-less bass, 6 string, radiating out like an aircraft propeller. Spin it round to the one you want to use next.
The radial guitar concept - nice! Would need to be a 4 string bass, 6 string geeetar, then surely an 8 string bass or a 12 string gee..? Imagine taking a break between songs to retune - the place would be shut before you'd finished! As for the abomination for sale - I'm thinking "kindling" Cheers, Rich

I don't think so, just an HDMI port on the underside. My FlipHD is about 3 years old so maybe the newer ones have mic input but not mine. I've also kind of killed mine by running it as an onboard camera round the Isle of Man - vibration has damaged the image receiver thingy so it looks all grainy. Cheers, Rich

Motorcityblue are not available sadly, anyone else want to jump forward or recommend a band? Cheers, Rich -
I've been using a FlipHD camera for recording gigs and rehearsals, and they are quite pants. A couple of people mentioned at last weeks gig that the bass was too loud, but on the camera you can barely hear it at all. So are there any decent HD video cameras out there with built in or external mics that will pick bass frequencies up well? Cheers, Rich
