1. The website is still up but the phone numbers appear dead. I was planning a visit tomorrow or Thurs but don't want to turn up and find it is no longer there. Cheers, Rich
2. I appear to have a box of black plastic bits and a pile of plastic swarf on my machine. Large chamfer, small chamfer, no chamfer, I'm too kind to you lot. I'm just waiting on mod approvals for sticking a link up on here to pay for them. Don't want to step on traders/sponsors toes. Rectangular to follow tomorrow morning whilst machine is set up for these. Cheers, Rich
3.
Rubbish! Just feign a heart attack - this will distract everyone and they won't notice the mistake.
If in doubt stick on an A and play 8th notes. You are never usually more than 5 frets off key..! Just try to look cool like you are playing a 5th instead of root because you know it and the rest don't. Confidence - appear confident, even if you don't have a clue, and never stop playing as that is a dead giveaway! Cheers, Rich
4. Trever - well I don't think I really good enough to be posting all over youtube, but I think I'm better than him! ELO - great playing but he used a pick - would have been much more impressive using fingers, but I don't really get the whole playing bass with a pick thing anyway.
5.
(or sitting down in the bus, on a seat still warm from the previous occupant).
y Unless Kylie Minogue was the previous occupant, in which case you'd be fighting me for that particular seat! I messed up at the last open mic by offering to play on a song I'd never even heard before. Copy of lyrics with guitar chords was supplied, and I made up a simple swing style bassline and followed the key changes. Went fine until I realised the song lyrics ran to two pages and I'd only be given Page 1! The second half of the song was crap, I was watching the guitarist and trying to follow the root notes, it did not all go to plan. Cheers, Rich
6. can you post up the weight, and is it the pictures or is the black finish in a much poorer state than the rest of it? It is my YOB and I'd like Jazz, got some cash burning a hole in my pocket. Cheers, Rich
7. LynSkyn, Call Me The Breeze. Just learned it this week for a rehearsal on Tues. Plays straight 12 bar except the 12 bars after the piano where it drops into a swing beat. The bassline also really stands out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsIqEq9OFxE Cheers, Rich
8.
with the less pronounced edge
By that do you mean a larger or smaller chamfer? I just want to be sure I've understood.
9.
Thanks Rich! Could you make them 35mm long and 8 to 10mm high, please? Black plastic, rectangular with the less pronounced edge and those dimensions if possible,
Leave it with me a few days and I'll knock up a sample. I'm just waiting on a note from the mods here in Castle Basschat about how I can go about doing this without stepping on the toes of traders (I make my living from vintage motorcycles and engines, not from bass thumb rests!) but allow people to pay and give shipping info easily. One way or another we should be ready to send these out by the end of next week. Cheers, Rich
10.
Also, I was wondering if it would be possible to make the thumb rest straight, as they all are, so you can move your finger to different playing positions...I would prefer the traditional shape to be honest
The original ones stick out from the pickguard quite a way so are screwed on instead of stuck on. These alu and plastic ones are all 5mm thick which I think it enough for a rest, but not too far that it will try to rotate off the sticky tape. I can do a rectangular version I guess, it is just a bit of programming time. It would be in the 5mm thick black plastic, and 12mm high, how long? The dipped version are 28mm. I don't have a standard Fender one to measure. What would you want, 45 or 50mm kind of length? Cheers, Rich
11. Hi all, While I await arrival of the aluminium rests I boofed the cad file into my mill and made a couple of acrylic samples this morning. One has a very tiny edge chamfer, the other has a more pronounced edge profile. I was concerned about it not having a sharp edge, but also not chamfering so far that your thumb falls off. Have a look at the attached pics - which size chamfer is the preferred one? I have the list a few posts above for alu, who would like these black acrylic ones and how many of them? Price for these will be a little more than the alu due to the machining time. It takes about 10 mins per part as appose to a few seconds with the laser. The alu are £4 each, the black plastic would be £6. Thoughts please before I go an make a bunch with the wrong chamfer.! Cheers, Rich
12. John Shuttleworth is on Sky Arts 1 now with his "One foot in the gravy" show. An odd mix of northern deadpan standup comedy and organ playing. Cheers, Rich
13. I've just placed the order for 20 off aluminium ones and 14 are already spoken for. I should have them around the end of next week. I had to place the orders for the other stuff in the batch to get the price down on these hence the urgency. Cheers, Rich
14. I'm afraid times are hard. I got peckish last week and ate the Unicorn.
15. okay okay I give in. I've just ordered a sheet of black Perspex. Leave it with me to make a sample, maybe at the weekend. I've got engines to dyno and run in most of the week and I cannot run the dyno and CNC mill together. They are in the same room and after 10 mins of two stroke testing the smoke gets too thick to see the screen on the mill....! Cheers, Rich
16. I may make a batch of black plastic ones in the future, but I would need to CNC mill them. I've got all the gear, but the equipment and me are fully booked on other jobs for the foreseeable future. I will do it as a hobby project maybe in a month or two. Cheers, Rich
17. Okay final prices are in. They are to be in 5083 aluminium, 5mm thick, laser cut and as they come off the machine. That will mean a little hand finishing if you want it completely smooth. £4 each plus postage, and I have to buy 40 to get that price. They will be silver aluminium, I cannot get black plastic laser cut. If the end quantity is less than 20 then the price may go up a little. So please reply back below if you are in and for how many. I will place the order on Wednesday afternoon for the quantity required plus a few spare, but not many. Diablo - 3 Les -3 Odysseus - 3 Barkin - 1 madshadows - 2 oppsdabassist - 2 Cheers, Rich
18.
... and be careful about taking on hecklers unless you're really good at it!
The usual method of dealing with this is to explain that the hecklers wife/girlfriend (take a guess based on age and surrounding people) said they were sh!t in bed when you were giving them one this afternoon. It usually removes the wind from the sails of said heckler and you can get on with the show. Cheers, Rich
19. Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls or Vintage Trouble - The Bomb Shelter Sessions. My two chill-out but rock-out albums of recent times. A great mix of songs on them.
20. I can only guess that the lister well... you know.... gets busy with the mannequin on an evening. There is a photo of the lass from the chippy under that stove-pipe. Dorset is a long way from civilisation. Cheers, Rich
21. I have a 2011 60th anniversary MIM P-bass and it weighs 8.8lbs. I would not want anything much heavier. At least after playing it for 3 hours I can still walk. Cheers, Rich
22. Black plastic is nasty stuff to laser cut as it burns and melts. The only option for black is to either anodise the alu ones, or I can CNC from acrylic plate. I should have quoted costs for the alu ones on Monday and will look at costs for plastic. I don't want to make a load of different versions or I end up either making 1 by 1, which is not worth it at £20 each, or a load of stock I would not know where to shift. Will report back with prices then, people can let me know how many they want, and we can go from there. Cheers, Rich
23. Freddie Mercury tribute concert now on Sky Arts 1 HD...
24. There is the chance to do a "deluxe" version which could be milled from billet aluminium with 2x screw holes and a 45 degree chamfered edge for the "bells and whistles" bassists out there. Is anyone interested in those rather than laser cut? I could CNC A sample over the weekend. They would work out more though, £10-15 each I would expect rather than a couple of quid. Cheers, Rich
25. Got the dropbox files cheers McNach, I will get it drawn over the weekend and quoted on Mon then post up on here. They will be laser cut from either aluminium or acrylic and the edges will be as laser cut. They will need dressing, filing, wet and dry to your preference of finish but it won't take long for such a small part. I'm sure at a couple of quid or so each people won't mind a bit of hand finishing. I don't really fancy finishing a batch myself, I just don't have the time. Will update on Monday. Cheers, Rich
