Who wants to listen to songs about working a steady job and paying the mortgage
I dunno, there is mileage in that: Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen Pour myself a cup of ambition Yawn and stretch and try to come to alive Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin' Out on the street the traffic starts jumpin' With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5 Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin' Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin' They just use your mind and they never give you credit It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it 9 to 5, for service and devotion You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion Want to move ahead but the boss won't seem to let me I swear sometimes that man is out to get me! They let you dream just to watch 'em shatter You're just a step on the boss-man's ladder But you got dreams he'll never take away You're in the same boat with a lotta your friends Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in an' the tide's gonna turn and it's all gonna roll your way Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin' Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin' They just use your mind and you never get the credit It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it 9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you? It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet 9 to 5, whoa what a way to make a livin' Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin' They just use your mind and they never give you credit It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it 9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you? It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet

It was kind of entertaining, especially the narrator waxing lyrical about Jefferson Aeroplane. That was the point where I realised both the narrator and the script writer both learned about funk from the internet about 2 weeks before the show was filmed. Love the pimped up cars and clothes though. Want to join a funk band now....

To 5 string or not to 5 string? That is the question.
Diablo replied to kulabula's topic in General Discussion
Arghhh - curse you "For Sale" section. Why am I drawn to sitting here trawling the ads for a 5er instead of working like I should be. I need help, does anyone have the phone number of basschatters anonymous? Mmm, 5er. Xmas. Must buy myself present. -
Herbie Flowers - just watched him playing for 2 hours!
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
Just to add, this link is for the 2009 tour, but pretty much all of it is still the same in the 2014 tour: http://www.performing-musician.com/pm/dec08/articles/wotwonstage.htm Of course Herbie played on the original album of WOTW, and the band is 56 people in total! Image trying to get that to to agree on a rehearsal schedule. It is hard enough getting 5 people into one place at the same time. -
Just been to see the live show of Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds in Newcastle. Been a fan of that ever since I was a kid, and the last chance to see Jeff was not to be turned down. However I thought the audience had got it wrong when they cheered as one of the musicians walked on stage, then picked up his bass. Shortly afterwards Jeff walked on to a bigger cheer, but I figured some people had got mixed up. Then I wondered why the bassist was stood at the front of the stage in front of everyone in the rather large band. Then I realised it was Herbie Flowers of T-Rex and all the rest of it. He played his Fender J, sounded great well up in the mix (against an orchestra of around 30 that is not bad going) and he played extremely well. The production standard was very high, if you get a chance and the rest of the shows are not sold out it is well worth a visit. The Chances of anything coming from mars....... Cheers, Rich

technique for muting the open strings when playing fast octaves
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
Another (and probably easier) way to get this is to play the high E on the E string at the 12th fret and when playing the C#, D octave pairs play those at the 9th fret on the E, 11th fret on the D and 10th fret on the E, 12th fret on the D respectively (I use my ring finger to fret the E octave then index finger and little finger for the C#, D pairs).
Doh! I didn't think of that.... I'll practice all the suggestions and see what works. -
technique for muting the open strings when playing fast octaves
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
Work thru it as it will stand you in good stead at a later point... but I also fail to see why the track should need or have to have octaves.. and especially if its a struggle The part needs driving and it gallops... work with a few different ways of playing it but simple octaves doesn't really drive it anyway..but if you must do that..you could play the octave at the 12th
Some practice tonight and it is sounding better, just need to develop more coordination between RH and LH fingers so I don't end up half a beat off after a few bars! It seems whoever owns the rights to that song has removed all tabs and dots from the web so there is little good info to go at. The only one I have found is octaves, and from listening to the version I have I'm sure at least a most points in the song octaves are played. Cannot do it at the 12 as there is a run up at the end of each 8 bar section and I cannot jump from the 12th to the 4th fret in half a beat at that speed. Need to stick within finger reach for it all. If you know a better version of the bassline for this song please share :-)
Get a 5 string & be done with it
stop being naughty. I've just bought tickets to the F1 GP in Hungary next year for my son's xmas present. Feeling poor right now. Just got to work out how to get to Hungary now... -
technique for muting the open strings when playing fast octaves
Diablo replied to Diablo's topic in General Discussion
Finger style all the way, I've never got on with a pick. I suppose this is one of those limitations of not having any lessons and no bass players around to sit and jam with, you don't pick up new techniques. I'll try a couple of the suggestions later when I do some practice. gjones - link missing from your post. Cheers, Rich -
I decided it would be a good idea to put Hollywood Nights into our setlist. Bass line is easy enough, but it is fast, and full of octaves, which from playing Jamiroquai and stuff does not bother me. However Hollywood nights has an E octave as the main riff, so open E then fret 7 on the A. I only have 4 string basses and I'm finding I cannot mute the open E effectively. It just sounds crap, either carrying on ringing or too much muting. All the other octave stuff I've played has used fingered notes so just lifting off the string does the muting. So - what is the technique/method to get this sounding great, or is it a 5 string job? I did try tuning down half a step on every string and playing the song a semitone up on the fretboard but those 1-3 fret octaves at that speed are a recipe for cramp and injury! Cheers, Rich

If you have too many singers we need one for our classic rock covers band..... let me know!
-
Our drummer keeps going on about this lot. I turned down free tickets to see them earlier this year, a bit meh I thought, but then I thought not so bad actually.

Don't set off a band by organising it all yourself AND paying for it - you'll get the pee taken badly. Any studio/rehearsal time costs should be split equally. It will start to get expensive (Forum, Darlo, couple of hours is over £15 a go) and it seems unless people are actually paying, then they are not so interested. In fact if you are organising it all I'd be pushing that you pay nowt and the others split the costs in lieu of your efforts.

Cool. Makes me want to rush out and buy a fog machine for the practice room now!

I've posted one on Gumtree, I'm both excited and worried about what may turn up. Watch this space.....

We are a classic rock covers band, playing the usual stuff from the 60's to today. Set includes Stones, Robben Ford, Dire Straits, Eagles, Foos, Lenny Kravitz, Black Crowes etc. Rehearsal once a week in Stockton or Darlington. Age range in band 40-60 but no preference for singer age or gender. Just be able to sing, learn the words and give some input on set lists etc. Drop me a PM if interested. Cheers, Rich
Doesn't everyone just find a world class singer in their kitchen, like I did?
I do have one in the kitchen, but my cat announced that he struggled with the high notes on AC/DC songs, and he preferred catching rats on a Saturday night rather than being covered in beer at the Dog and Duck. Too posh to mosh I guess is the term.

Cheers for the ideas, let's see where this adventure ends up. Why is it always the bloody singers that cause grief - that is 3 in a year.
-
It was happening for a while, but our singer finally got pushed out/quit today, which although it causes pain finding a new one, he was over-committed on other stuff and could not devote the time required. So - I need a classic and modern rock singer and I've run out of people I know or would do anything with in a band. Male or female, no preference, but what is the best way: Joinmyband Basschat (I cannot see a bass forum being the way to go!) Gumtree ad in local music shop What would you recommend.....? We've got a rehearsal booked next Tuesday in Darlington and it is looking like 2 hours of Green Onions at the moment. Cheers, Rich

Peavey to auction off 'Excess Stock' this week
Diablo replied to MonkeyTrick's topic in General Discussion
This is more like a warehouse/repair centre being closed than just a stock clearance. All the tools and equipment including racking, lift trucks, scopes etc is also for sale. Anything that is left will just either be sold at the next auction as a single lot, or it will be weighed in. No liquidator wants anything hanging around as it just costs them money afterwards. -
At the risk of being hanged drawn and quartered, if you want to move up the mix then you need to consider why you've ended up down there all the while in the first place.
If you are talking about when playing live, well the bass player is usually the one stood nearest the volume on the bass amp... you are as prominent as you want to be. Failing that buying beer for the sound man if you DI will see a higher mix! For recording, well you've go to be vocal and make your case to lift yourself up so you are more than a muffled drone in the background.

"Pressure and Time" Rival sons - what a song! Learning this on bass too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MA0m1K2jW4
