Never been able to do it in 30+ years of playing - always sounds like crap, especially when trying to get the picking hand muting down. I'm just happier playing fingerstyle, and thankfully both of the bands I play in aren't leaning on me to play with a pick

Would like to start using Trace Elliot gear
louisthebass replied to pburrows's topic in Amps and Cabs
The original TE gear was great, but as TheGreek states, really very heavy to lug around. I first had an AH350 head with an 1810 cab - sounded bloody awesome but only gigged it a few times before selling it on. About 10 years later bought an old AH500 head and teamed it up with a couple of Peavey cabs - I think Hamster on here has that TE head now, but definitely a great piece of kit. Have used some of the later TE gear in rehearsal rooms, but it doesn't even come close. Will be interested to see what the feedback is on the new ELF head. -

Update: Bought 2 x Eminence Neo speakers from Lean Audio - went to change them over and found that the wiring in the original speakers had been soldered to a plate on the speaker cones. Wasn't a happy bunny.... Thankfully, the legend that is OBBM came to the rescue and I now have two fully functioning Epifani speaker cabs! Big thanks to Dave for all his work!! -
Chance to play in Rock n Roll Oldies Band..

Something I plan to do in my 60's if I can still play reasonably well - would love to just have an old school 50's type Fender P strung with flats playing stuff by the likes of Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Fats Domino etc.. Some really great 50's R&R bands on the circuit in the Sth East - The Kingcats, Greggi G, Vintage, The Jets, and The Roosters are all working regularly doing jive nights -
Here's mine in action at a gig a couple of months ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0ipjeF2wJo
Great, thanks!
Update: Paul's come back to me - unfortunately he can't make it as he's doing a gig in Finland that day. -
Great TV Theme tunes and Credit to them Bass players.

One of my favourites is the music on the closing credits on "Spender" - can't post a link without putting up an entire episode... Think the bass part was played by either Guy Pratt (who worked with Jimmy Nail on "Ain't no Doubt") or Tony McAnaney, who played guitar shop owner Keith Moreland in the show. -
Good call, Pawel.. Will ask around to see if anyone's available and willing to do a lesson for us. It does need a bit of narrowing down though, so perhaps people could suggest some topics that would be really useful to have covered in a bass lesson? A few years ago, Jake, a.k.a. jakenewmanbass, did a lesson for us at the West Sussex mini-Bash and that was great!
Count me in too! What about asking Paul Geary or Dave Swift to do a lesson (really enjoyed their talk at the show a few years ago)? -
Interesting article, and I'm not sure that the electric guitar will ever completely die out, but it will be very much a "minority" pastime as the years progress. Those companies making huge losses just need to start cutting their cloth accordingly. I also think that people don't really have the money to be able to afford to buy instruments - wages for most people are low, and other things take priority. There are a lot of kids / young people who are growing up with technology, and in my experience they want something that can be mastered fairly quickly (Playstation, X-Box, etc). A lot of music that features guitar isn't featured on mainstream radio either. Learning a musical instrument takes time and effort (as everyone on here knows) and the market in this day and age for guitars (and basses) will be a lot smaller than it was back in the 60's and 70's.

Yep, me too - would love to give one of these a run out. I like the look of these BB's, but having owned a BB in the past I guess that makes me biased?

Bass cab repair - North East Surrey area

Update: Have been in touch with Epifani and also had a look at one of the speaker cones. No evidence of which manufacturer in respect of the cone, so still none the wiser there. Epifani for their part have been as helpful as they can be, and have recommended one of their new speaker designs. However, I would get caned for import duty as soon as they hit the U.K. so that's not really an option for me. So.... Next option now is to get one of the speakers recommended by Markstuk and see how I get on. Will keep you all posted! -

I bought one of the Gator small bags for my TH500 - great little bag for the money: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Gig_Skinz_Gig_Bags.html -
Combining playing in a band and shift work can be a nightmare. Did it for nearly 20 years before I got in a situation where I was just working days Mon - Fri. I was lucky in that my night shifts were cast in stone, but there were occasions where I had to try and swap shifts with people or book holiday to accommodate gigs. 98% of the time it worked, but if there was a situation where I couldn't, it usually meant cancelling or getting a dep. Unfortunately, I needed to work to pay bills, run a car, etc so work had to take priority. Shift work (usually) pays pretty well, but sometimes money isn't everything. It's all about having a work / life balance.

BGM columnist Philip Mann has a couple of really good chord tone books out at the moment - am currently working my way through the first one, with the second waiting in the wings. The books are only available through Philip - drop him a PM on his FB page...
The bass gallery at camden are shown as the UK distributor, try them.
Was thinking of doing that, but couldn't really see where they did any repairs or suchlike to anything but basses? I've now had a response back from Epifani, and they've more or less echoed Markstuk's comment about opening the cabs up to see what type of speakers were used. I've been told by Epifani that it should be an easy fix, so will let you all know how that goes in due course. Big THANK YOU to all that have chimed in on this -
I'm sure if you put a shout out someone local will give you a hand.. But you do need to identify the driver being used as I think Epifani also used an Eminence driver as well...
Will do - probably be a few days before I open them up as I've got a lot on, but I'll put an update on this once I've had a butchers and put the wheels in motion. -
It's likely that your cabs are using b&c 10hpl64 drivers. Take one out to check. Recone kits are available from blue Aran for about £65 each..
Thanks for that - no reply from Epifani as yet, so if it's radio silence from them, DIY really will be the only way. Will be very interesting as I've absolutely no experience with mucking about with speaker cabs from a technical standpoint.... -
With my active bass, when the battery is low it distorts the sound even though amp/cabs are fine. Just thought I'd share so you can rule that out (as it's a cheap fix!) :-)
That's what I thought initially, but played the same bass (Overwater Jazz) through a borrowed Eden combo at a gig Saturday night and things sounded fine. My Yamaha TRB5 has a high pitched hum when the battery goes on it! -
Whats wrong with them? Blown drivers? Crossover gone? What cabs are they?
They're UL110''s - getting a distorted sound, so I'm guessing that the drivers have blown -

Update: No joy so far, so it looks like a DIY job for me. Have emailed Epifani to see if they can give me any support with going down that route. Buying new cabs not really an option as money's tight...
