1. Not sure which website it is you're referring to, but this is my 2p's worth; I don't think it hurts to know your Major, Minor, Major Pentatonic and Minor Pentatonic scales. To me, they're the Lego Bricks of 99% of Rock, Pop, Blues, Country and any other mainstream type of music that the general public listen to. Your chord tones come from your Major and Minor scales, and they are the things you need most in order to function as a bass player in a band. The other notes in the scale add harmonic interest if you choose to use them in your bass playing.
2. Great job - that's a superb looking bass. I bet it sounds pretty good too! .
3. Like this Mike, that's a really tight band you've got there .
4.
Absolutely loved that. 'Murdering a classic' is a ridiculous thing to say. Its different, but certainly not ruining it!
Agree, thought they did a good job with both - Drury's will always be the classic version of "Rhythm Stick", but it was interesting to see and hear a different spin on it...
5. Saw this posted on Facebook originally, great bit of footage of Paul Turner and his band Shuffler tearing it up on a couple of groovy covers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhemzPTYdJE
6.
I would be fluent in both. I use 1 2 4 in the lower frets for reach 1 2 3 4 as I get up to 5th fret
This works for me .
7.
Class band, singers, sound and bass. Class.
Totally agree - Trevor Barry does a grand job in that band. I originally started watching Strictly for the band, but have been totally hooked on the complete show ever since. Sophie Ellis-Bextor's one of my tips to win it this year....
8.
I really have to admire anyone getting a custom made bass, but on reading this thread I dont think I,ll bother!
I had a custom build by a very reputable builder - I was promised 6 months, and the build was completed and in my hands in that time. Not every custom build is a bad experience. From some of the threads I've seen over the years on the forum, the vast majority seem to have a favourable outcome.... .
9.
I missed the talk, can someone send post a link to the youtube channel, please ?
This is Mike's YT channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qRgHpQi1YE
10.
Wow! What a fab day Thanks to everyone who came yesterday and to everyone who either worked behind the scenes to make it happen or who gave a talk/workshop. Loads of people gave either their time, support, ideas, knowledge/experience, donations, general goodwill etc, etc -it was just brilliant! Sorry about the SNAFU with the tombola and things over-running; as Jack's already said, 'less is more', so we'll try and get that right next year. I didn't get to see much gear, but obbm's Sadowsky, smaz's Fender fretless and the new Barefaced cabs were amazing!! Got to thank especially, Walbassist for sorting out the action on my Blade B15 and Doug who helped us set up at 9am - cheers guys. Plus Matt from Admiral Roadside Assistance who helped me to get home after I stupidly locked myself out of my car as I was just about to leave... And really cool to see Kiwi again after so long too.. Here's to next year already
I reckon next year's will be a cracker Will you be uploading any pics you took yesterday Nik?
11.
Morning All, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came to hear my talk - I know I covered a lot of ground and as such felt I was perhaps rushing along which is just how it is if you have 45mins to explain stuff that I've developed over many years - so if you have any further questions etc please ping me a message and I'll be happy to try and explain things further. Next year I'm open to suggestions for what I might be able to cover - personally I'd love to bring my laptop electro-jazz thing to the bash - maybe with either a drummer of trumpeter friend of mine - got some work to do on that but hey I've got a year... Thanks again for listening to me and hopefully it was useful-ish Mike
Really enjoyed your talk Mike, made a lot of sense in terms of what you do on your YouTube channel .
12. Good day, nice to catch up with a couple of old faces. Really enjoyed the lectures today .
13. To be honest, as much as I love to hear an electric player swing on jazz standards, the upright beats it. The electric bass has too much sustain, whereas the shorter decay of the notes on the upright sits better in the mix when a bassist is playing in two or four on a standard.
14.
Well I had a quick look on Amazon and the intermediate and advanced books looks great so I went ahead and ordered them from the publisher. Looking forward to getting started on them!
Might be worth you reading this: http://www.basslinepublishing.com/faq/
15.
OBBM
+1 Quality kit at affordable prices - can't go wrong....
16. Make sure you've got a steel helmet on your noggin & you're wearing Kevlar....
17. I've nearly finished book one, and would echo that it is a really good book to get your feet wet with the reading thing. Will be ordering book two very soon. Well done Stuart .
18. I think they were talking about their PA rig, but the last line creased me up..... .
19. Trace Elliot definitely... . Shame it was so bloomin' heavy .
20. Glad you like them - found them by chance over the weekend .
21. I really like these two videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl7Z8CfXn8k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIE8KlDku6k
22.
So this didn't quite happen due to a problem with the finish on the bass...But I have been sent some pictures from Mr Shuker - All it's waiting for is the pickups, and I should be collecting it next week, in time for my next contract! Yippee!!
Very nice - looking forward to seeing the end result .
