Take it easy. Stop if you need a rest, pick it up again in a couple of minutes, eventually you'll build your stamina up. Don't continue to play if you're fatigued though definitely do have that rest or you could start slipping into bad positions and hurting your tendons. It does take some time to get comfortable and familiar with it. In the mean time enjoy the experience of getting any tune out of something so enormous, and take the opportunity to learn about less being more - given that you probably can't play many notes right now, make them good ones in good places.
Cheers mate sounds like good advice . Any good beginner books , DVDs regarding thumb positions and exercises to build the coordination ?

Well it arrived . Lovely instrument BUT Jesus it feels like I'm fighting it ! Any tips for getting the hang of it ? I'm trying scales and yesterday put the iPod on and played along but even getting through one song without stopping is tough lol !
Hi mate - dont use this app but do use Pages on my iPad for lyrics to new songs which I then attach to my mic stand with an iClip attachment. Also use the clock on the iPad to keep track of where we are in the gig. Useful things. Good to see a fellow Leeds fan on the site. A very sad day for Leeds - 12 years since the horror in Turkey. RIP Chris and Kev Andy
Cheers mate .

Just got it yesterday , great app for compiling your sets and lyrics . Anybody use it ? Any tips ?
The book I recommended is a very good source for the answers to tnit's question but, in a nutshell, for me, the answer is 'all of the above'. If Iam playing a tune I know well, it is more likely that I will relax and play more 'intuitively' because I know the changes well. If, however, I am playing something new that I haven't seen before, I am more likely to be in a 'conscious theory' mode. Often, if I am playing a tune I kind of know, I will play half of it in relaxed mode and half (the middle 8 of Have You Met Miss Jones?) using consciously applied theory. Strangely, I often use theory more consciously when I am playing walking lines. But there are examples where I am playing along with a sax plyer who keeps playing a little riff and I can consciously process the m,elody and harmonise it, creating a nice little improvised effect, a 'yeah' moment . Often, it is a case of 'hearing' what someone else is doing harmonically so you can react to it. I guess it is like understanding the written word. We don't process all of the grammar, we just know what it means but, if we are trying to hear or say something important or complicated, we are more likely to pause and consider our next sentence. The book I recommended is massive and incredibly detailed; not a light read at all but at £11 Kindle price, it is enormously good value.. Quite inspiring for me.
Never seen that before mate cheers .
There is a booklet in with the video with a load of the licks transcribed. It's a bad video though,to be honest.
It was great in its day though. I remember when it came out , to actually see someone explaining this weird concept of "thumping" was GREAT ! Also seeing the Jeff Berlin one as well was an eye opener , colutia on drums , gambale on guitar . Great memories .

Good "Standard" Jazz electric bass players
blamelouis replied to jackotheclown's topic in General Discussion
The thing that puts me off DB is I have NEVER been able to hear it properly at any jazz gig I've been to. Seen Wooten two years ago and Mark king last year and my ears were bleeding . -
Hi All, Nick Wells borrowed a bass from me a week or so ago (he's a big fan of my Miller!). He more or less said what Maxcat posted above - they're working on some big changes, and there's lots of brilliant ideas brewing. I think it's just a case of being patient until issue 3 is released, which hopefully will be soon. Nick is a great bloke, and I have a lot of faith in him - I'm sure everything will be fine, but I can understand why everyone is annoyed! That's my opinion anyway, Cheers, Lorry
Just a bit of communication isnt much to ask surely ?
