I've been playing nothing but reggae for 30 years - it's a spiritual thing and a direct route to the soul. It's a music you feel with your heart rather than hear with your head and who feels it knows it. To all those bassists who wish they were in a reggae band I say - form one now, today's dream is tomorrow's reality. The sheer quantity of incredible Jamaican music over the past 40 years is unbelievable for a small 3rd world island and the message has spread all over the world with great new roots bands in every country. It's influence is heard in most poular music from punk to rap and while never mainstream, it appeals to a wide range of people, unlike most other genres. It's positive and uplifting with a message of one love and unity - what's not to like? You can check my band here. One Love.
As a long time reggae nut that is really GREAT stuff !! Really enjoying it !

Hiromi Uehara's Sonicbloom (Tony Grey)
blamelouis replied to AdamWoodBass's topic in General Discussion
Ok so whos heard of Hiromi? If you haven't, sort it out man! Some really incredible and intense jazz fusion with some amazing players. Obviously my interest in the band came from Tony Grey, what a player!!! My problem with the Berklee graduates is that after watching/listening to them I just want to go to Berklee! Anyone got a spare 20 odd grand a year for the course fees that they wouldnt mind passing on to me?! I'll take a cheque!!! This should give you a pretty good idea of what they're about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00fKuTD52gQ Enjoy! Ad
I have been banging on about her for two years now and nobodys interested! Her Time control album is SUPERB and should be compulsory listening for ALL musicians. -
The final final gig of my soul band Nice Guy Eddie last night - a wedding in a large room. It was a miracle I even got there with the worst man-flu I've had in years, I felt absolutely sh*te and had a bit of a temperature but as they say - the show must go on. Lots of new gear in use too - Ashdown head / Aguilar 112s (again) and my new Sadowsky. The band loved the sound and I fooking hated it - I had to boost the mids / highs to cut through and then it got quite trebly / scratchy - great for rock / punk but 60's soul? It was very punchy but lacked the definition I'm used to and I'm slowly coming around to the conclusion that I'm a Markbass man. Much as I loved my new Sadowsky, I struggled with 4 strings and the extra string spacing and by the third song wished I'd started with my 5 string Spector. I never realised how much I use the B string until last night and now I don't know whether to persist with the 4 string Sadowsky or try and swap it for a 5 string one. I know I know... I've got a blues dep gig at the Burnley Blues Festival tomorrow - just received the set list Yeh yeh I know it's "only blues" but I have my work cut out trying to remember how each song goes and all I want to do is lie down and watch some crap on the box.
You know it makes sense !

Have your heard Bill Frissel's 'Have A Little Faith'? Superb.
Adam Nitti is one of the nicest people people you'll ever meet . Fantastic player and lovely guy , all thats GOOD about bass. Im on his myspace and he replies to questions and is soooo humble , and doesnt email you to see if you have nora jones's email address Know what i mean Bilbo ? Great interview here ! Thinking of forming a covers band - Advice needed
blamelouis replied to BigBeefChief's topic in General Discussion
We've got some of these. I wouldn't buy them again. It's all very well when they're on the stands, but lifting the buggers on and off is a real PITA. +1 for everything else. Sage advice. Pete
Yeah ten seconds of hell ! -
Although I hate Jazz, I was watching this last night. I found the music truly terrible, but I couldn't help but marvel at the musicianship of those fellas. I even tuned back in at the end to see who the bass player was. Although its not my cup of tea, I thought he was infinitely better and more "musical" than every other Jazz bass palyer I've heard. Respect due.
Turning to the darkside ?

A Review of The Players School of Music, Part 2
blamelouis replied to funkle's topic in General Discussion
Fantastic post Funkle , great to hear from someone who has lived the dream. If you were to reccomend a system of study that would be the most beneficial to us non attending students what would it be ? I got a LOT out of Jeffs chord tones for bass system but would like to take it further. -
Berklee in Dublin at Easter - anyone else going ?.
blamelouis replied to 6stringbassist's topic in General Discussion
Chord Scales and Voicings , sounds good ! A bit expensive at the minute though . -
Unbelievable - I was listening to that not 4 hours ago. It is a great CD. Have your heard Metheny's 'Map Of THe World'. No bass at all but its absolutely marvellous.
No must check that out Bilbo I used to laugh at Charlie Haden when i was a Jaco nut "but he doesnt do anything why does he work so much , these people know nothing" Now i know why he works so much ! Sorry Charlie
-
I've been checking out "Beyond the Missouri sky" by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden and i have to say it really is a fantastic album . Hadens playing is a breath of fresh air he is so restrained and doesnt get in the way of the progressions and just coaxes the melody lines with his harmonic choices ! Highly reccomended especially to duo bassists ,masterclass!
The bloke down the road from me valued my Squier Jazz at £6500. But then again, he also said he was Napoleon.
I have a Squier jazz , do you think Mr Bonaparte might have a look? Apart from that i've a 1988 Warwick Streamer which is priceless to me ! -
I think they are one of the greatest groups ever! Plus the tension between them always added to it. Sting="the problem with our records is people cant dance to them and thats down to our drummer" Stewart = "BULLSHIT i've been carried on crowds shoulders around discos" !

The "slap bass program " is a great video and was the standard slap reference for years . There was also a great book a few years ago called "bass aerobics " i think it was with a foreword by Mark King which was very good. But like quite a few on here i bought the Stuart Clayton Slap book and it really is the dogs danglies! I'd go as far as to say that it has become the slap bass players standard book it really is that good. Because all the up to date techniques are there from Vic to Marcus by the time you get to the end you'll be funkin up a storm !!! P.S. i heard an interview with Marcus Miller a few years ago and he said he would reccommend playing along to the whole Earth Wind and Fire back catalouge , tried it recently and i have to say my groove is without doubt "Deeeeeeeper" , serious pocket sh*t !
It's great because the more you invest in it, the more it gives you in return. The demands it places on you as a performer and listener increase as your skills, knowledge and competence increase. You play the same song the day you start playing jazz and the same song 5, 10, 15, 20 years later and it will grow with you and demand more of you each time. Your ability to deliver a fine performance depends on your whole mind, body and spirit and the more ready you are, the more you will find in every chord change, rhythmic inflection and dynamic. It is spiritually, emotionally and viscerally satisfying and will always remain the gift that continues giving.
Unless its watermelon man, eh Bilbo !
Definitely - but my fave stuff f late is all his Joni Mitchell stuff - the live double album Shadows and Light is outstanding - he's just rules the whole gig from the bass... it's astonishing playing, even when it's a 'simple' bass line, every note is perfectly played. But Hejira is by far my favourite Jaco/Joni album - but I'm still in awe of much of his playing on his solo debut - he was 24 when he did most of that - and there was quite iterally NOTHING like it before he recorded it. He really turned the whole role of the bass - and its various possibilities within music - on its head. I wrote an article - with quotes from interviews I did with Mike Brecker, John Scofield and Pat Metheny - which summarises his impact on jazz and with wider musical world you can ead it here: http://www.munkio.com/words/jaco_feature.html Cheers Mike
Thats a great site Mike, congrats mate well done !
