Good luck with your bass ! When i got my first bass ( Westone thunder 2 ) i sat for months learning "Live and Dangerous" by Thin Lizzy from start to finish. Ahhh memories !

Yeah i was a member cancelled my subscription about a month ago. Great idea but not enough happens for the money you pay.

I can practice unplugged with my Status fretted and fretless but cant with my Warwick streamer cos the wood seems to soak the sound up ! Weird innit ?

BASSISTS KNOW YOUR LIMITS !!
Blamelouis! No, the know it all tis not me, 1. I live in Peterborough! 2. I've got 54 basses (not 30)! AND 3. I play in many bands, (pays ze mortgage!) 4. I USED to be loaded back in the old days during the IT boom! I suppose you could say I'm one of those annoying b$stards with too much gear but never a know it all, remember, the more you learn the more you realise how little you really know! hehe! Nick (there is a guy advertising on gumtree from that area, looking for Wals and Jaydees - hmmm!)
Your still LOADED and know more than me !

Has anyone read "The Music Lessons" by Victor Wooten?
blamelouis replied to 7string's topic in General Discussion
I'd like a copy of "the music lesson" i can swop a hard back guy pratt ! -
Like Jaco said "theres only two types of music good and bad " ! Good slap = Rio Funk Marcus Miller
Hmm. I'm in a funk band and slap in one of our songs, only because it fits perfectly well. There are plenty of songs I know it doesn't work and prefer to sit back and just play 'quietly'. Too much slap is mind-numbing - i'd had enough of it after the last Bass Bash !
Nothing wrong with that ! But to go off on a tangent not complimenting the music for a few notes every couple of bars = delusions of adequacy ! diarrhea of the fretboard , constipation of the mind !

I have no problem with slap bass, like a lot of bassists i bought stuart claytons slap book (fantastic) and love mark king and marcus miller jonas hellborg and michael manring and do slap myself. My problem is the TOURETTES syndrome which has no musical merit at all. To switch from fingerstyle to slapping for a quick 3 note burst in the middle of a tune defies logic surely ? And also to look round the club as if to say "check me out " is comical! Maybe i'm being too harsh.
I am familiar with the technique for slap, but seem to lack the associated rhythms for it. When I try to slap I just feel very silly. I'll stick to my finger-style for practice/gigs and leave the slap for getting the attention of the nearest sales assistant in the music stores
And you play a thumb bass !

We once played "youve lost that loving feeling " for the first dance ! And it was their request.
Doesn't Bakithi Kumalo play slapped fretless?
Beautifully
"Bass Tourettes" - classic, and absolutely on the nail! There was a local indie band I saw a couple of years back, whose bassist, though technically good (I suppose) played odiously inappropriate slappy-tappy stunt bass through the entirety of each & every one of their 4-chord strumalongs. As well as doing that idiotic spin-the-bass-over-your shoulder-&-catch-it trick every couple of minutes. Knob. I've not seen them around for a few years - probably the rest of the band beat him to death with his 'Ray. Jon.
Funnily enough this guy had a stingray!
Agreed. It can be hatefully tacky and over the top, but a well placed single 'pop' or slap can be pretty groovy. I love the fretless and play it probably about half the time. Mind you, fretless can be equally cheesy when not used tastefully, loads of slides and chorus... gimme a break!! Cheers ped
Slides and chorus
Its all down to the venues - they book what pulls the punters in. This applies to jazz as much as it does anything else. I was talking to some poeple last night who are booking a jazz band next year to coincide with a local jazz festival. They have no idea what or who they will book and couldn't recognise a lemon if it was geoid and yellow. They just want to pull in some passing trade. They are trying to earn a living too. I'm semi-pro and would go out for £50 but only if its good music. If its tosh it's £80 minimum
Theres a band where i live undercutting everybody charging £30 a man ! And they arent kids they've been playing a few years!
I was acosted by an old aquaintance of mine last night in my local. This guy is a serious bass collector, he has about 30 basses ranging from 60's precissions and jazzes to alembics, statuses, Jaydees and god know what else. He's loaded as you would expect and he spent the night explaining to me the benefits of each of his instruments and how this one was better than that one for getting certain sounds etc. He has all the latest amps and speakers. Eden and EBS stacks etc, his neighbours must be in torment Eventually I had to retreat outside with the rest of the smokers under our present aparthied system and managed to sneak off home. I couldn't belive this bloke was giving me advice about getting the right tone. He's never done a gig outside his bedroom but is an expert on the subject apparently Thinking back this morning I just thought what a waste of money, might as well buy an X box 360 for my dog
It wasnt Doctor Bass was it ?

Well i must be in the minority here cos i prefer Bass Guitar (UK) its a better read than that yank w*** ! BGM could be better but then so could everything from FC Barcelona to Jeff Berlin.

in the middle of songs !! Went to see a local band last night , very good apart from the bass player kept playing slap riffs and then back to fingerstyle in EVERYTHING from "i shot the sheriff" to "you need a friend " ! WTF is all that about its like bass tourettes !!! I saw another well known local basist doing this six months ago and couldnt believe it then either, it has made up my mind im going 100% fretless from now on i dont want to risk sliding on the slippery slope !!

Awesome pics thanks for that ! -
I'm listening to the second Bass Desires album "second sight " at the moment . The track "thrillseekers " is different class ! Scofield at his finest nearly as good as "Still Warm " Thanks Bilbo for reminding how much i LOVE Sco !
-
I think MK is a VERY underrated bass player . Try playing "children say" and singing it at the same time, his timing is immaculate ! And he is the first to put his own playing down "i just wiggle my fingers and get that nervous EVERYTHING gets thrown in before the first bar has finished" I met him in Dublin after they're last gig there he'd had a few drinks and was an absolute gentleman and very funny telling everyone to follow him to the nearest bar ! Marky babes we salute you !!

I love the Marc Johnsons bass desires stuff with scofield and bill frisell.
