Just bought a little Tascam phrase trainer & it came loaded with a track from this guy - his version of "Get Down On It". Not exactly my favourite song ever but some very cool bass playing so I thought I'd look him up. Seems he played pro NBA for 12 years and scored about a zillion points & when he retired he decided to take up pro jazzy funk using his, left handed, style to play lead parts in a style vaguely similar to some of Stanley Clarke's "poppier" workouts. Picked up a lot of tips from Marcus M apparently. Really very listenable of you like this sort of thing. Check him out at: http://www.waymantisdale.com/ Or nice little EPK sampler on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD4tDYRz_tA
Was it also loaded with Stevie wonder ,weather report and paul simon ?

blamelouis replied to SMART's topic in General Discussion
I just love Roxy's bass lines...Same Old Scene is just awsome and has been said it was Gary Tibbs who was also in Adam & The Ants. He also features in the video so it is him.
Gary Tibbs was only on the prince charming album, sad i know but i was a big ants fan! -
I envy you. I was in Cardiff when Jed WIlliams was running the Welsh Jazz Scoiety & the Four Bars Inn which is a relateively small pub near the castle in Cardiff. I saw Scofield in that little pub - Mike Stern was scheduled to play with Bob Berg but cancelled when Leni Stern got cancer but other gigs included Dave Murray, the World Saxophone Quartet, Art Farmer, Kenny Wheeler, Bheki Mseleku - the list was endless. Then there was Brecon Jazz every year which , because I was local, I did lots of playing at (7 times one year) and saw lots of great stuff for free - Miroslav Vitous and Arild Anderson borrowed my amps one year, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Jeff Andrews with Vital Information, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Motian (w. Steve Swallow!!!!!)! It was heaven. Now I am in the jazz Sahara - nothing EVER gets up here. In the last 4 years I have seen Avishai Cohen and John Etheridge. That's it. It's like the last two decades never happened!!
Tell us about it !! Here in belfast i've seen mclaughlin and scofield and in dublin last year bela fleck with vic! And THATS IT !!

For me it has to be Pino pallidino Darryl Jones Mick Karn Mo Foster Marcus miller Mark Egan Abe Laborial Neil stubenhaus (think thats how you spell his name)his work with Tom Scott was AMAZING ! Jeff Berlin (pump it ,the 80's jaco pastorius album) Felton crews Jonas hellborg. Not a bad list -
That manring video had me pissing myself and the way he kept going to the amp with the dodgy lead and the out of tune fretless !!!! Best i've seen !

Fantastic show ! And along with andys book the catalyst for the reunion! -
I had one and sold it on after about a year. Fantastic build quality ,second to none professional bass BUT...... I just couldn't get along with it,loads of bottom, mids and highs but TOO hifi for my liking. Now i just use my fretless Status energy and my fretted Warwick 88 streamer ! Has anyone tried a fretless kingbass? Dont know how that would work!
I will speak to a mate of mine at Ashdown who used to work with gav and try to get a number for him. If I am able, I will give him a call and see whats happening and if I can , will try to get your amp. I only live down the road from Maldon. cant promise anything but will do my best.
Cant ask better than that !!

DO IT! What happens if someone else in your band gets a regular gig? you'll kick yourself. Oh and stop that bloody tapping !!! Thats why god created guitarists, to annoy people !!!!
-
The GREAT Omar Hakim !
-
Most embarassing moment was my strap breaking in the second number and WHY would you carry a spare ? Had to do the whole gig with bass on my knee. And then the guitarist pulled a strap from his case after the gig and said "you needed teaching a lesson" So i hid his ME5 effects unit until the van was about to pull away !Lol! Another good tip i got was from the same guitarist who told me if you wear leather pants you can "piss yourself and nobody will know "!
If I remember correctly, he was taught by/had some lessons with a bass player called Joe Hubbard who played with Gary Numan......he was also a tremendous bassist. Saw him live at the Manchester Apollo many years ago, and thought he was actually too good to play with Gary Numan if you know what I mean. Then again, a musician's got to keep a roof over his head.....and I'd snap Gary's hand off I suppose if he asked me
You should read Numans book ,slags off joe hubbard big time! Pino also took lessons off Joe Hubbard who is now a martial arts coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.p2c2e.freeserve.co.uk/sfcukx/sfcukx.html -

How good do you need to be to work in a cover band?
blamelouis replied to Cantdosleepy's topic in General Discussion
If you want to go down that road, learn motown ! 95% of people want to dance and good covers bands who work a lot .......GROOVE ! Also Chic is handy to know ,cos your 1 will be DOWN ! I played in covers bands for years and we were getting £80 a man 5-6 nights a week, really good dough and if the other guys in the band are good lads it can be a great time. Just remember ALWAYS practice ,have a bass at home practice the complete opposite of what you are playing nightly and dont get in a rut. It's so easy to leave your bass in the van and watch "trisha" while eating breakfast at three o'clock in the afternooon! You have been warned.
