I was in the same position as yourself a few months ago. A total beginner, not knowing what to buy to get started. I eventually went for the Squier Affinity P bass/Fender Rumble 15W package. In my opinion the guitar was more then capable, but the amp let it down. My advice would be to buy the guitar separately and spend as much as you can afford on a decent amp.
Well I'm still watching it. I keep telling myself that my CIJ Mustang is perfect & I don't need an old one, but them I look at those pics again...
You'll hear on Sunday if I do give in to temptation & get into big trouble with the missus. Or if this is the one that got away.
Bidding has ended. Well did ya get it? did ya did ya?? -
Any idea what other pick guards would go with the bass? I can't get my head around that one!
Hmmmm decisions decisions!! I will be interested to see your replies as I'm in exactly the same position, looking for a new P and considering the same guitars as yourself. At the moment I'm favouring the Highway 1 in honey blonde!

Hi everyone. Thank you for all your comments, there are some very good points made. I think I'm going to have a word with my tutor and ask him about maybe a more structured lesson, meanwhile I'm going to study the more technical aspects myself from books (I have a few) and try that. If my tutor is unable or unwilling to help then I will search for a dedicated bass tutor in my area. I'm in Devizes, Wiltshire, so if anyone knows of a bass tutor in this area please let me know. Thanks again

I've been playing bass now for a few months and go weekly to a tutor. My tutor is a great guy and I get on really well with him, but I can't help feeling that I'm not really learning how to play. He is a guitarist, who also plays bass and my sessions with him are getting a bit repetitive. What I mean is that he shows me or asks me what I would like to play i.e. a tab. We go over it a bit and then I take it home and practice it. The following week, provided I've kind of got it down we have a little jam session and then the same thing happens again. Now whilst I enjoy learning new songs and jamming with him is fun, he's not really showing me any technique, so I don't feel like I'm really learning how to play the instrument. It could be that he thinks this is all I want, and to be honest I'm not exactly sure myself except I can't help feeling I want more than this. Maybe a bit more technical know-how. Not sure this is making sense, but where do I go from here?

No, don't like that at all. Not keen on Bongo's either!

I'm lucky, no kids and a very understanding, supportive wife. I can just chill when I want with my bass.

A good price? -
Just to throw something else into the pot, you could do worse than consider a Squier 60's Classic Vibe Jazz. I play one, it's well built, sounds great and looks the part. Just a thought.

First time I've seen this and I'm just blown away!

Yep, got one of those, I'm very new to playing bass, so maybe not the one to ask, but I think it certainly looks the part, is well built and sounds lovely. Suffered a bit with buzzing at first, but after playing around with the truss rod now plays really well. As I said I'm fairly new to the bass, so can't compare it to more expensive models, but for the money I'm well pleased.

When I was a kid at school back in the 60's I played drums in a band. The bass guitarist was rubbish, but he had a really nice Fender and I was always dead jealous of it and thought I could play it better. After school I quit the band and gave up playing the drums and drifted away from music, playing at least. 15 years ago I started playing alto sax because I loved the sound and thought it was sexy, but the novelty wore off and I gave it up a couple of years ago, but now music was in my blood. I decided to take up guitar, bought a nice Fender Strat, found a great tutor and away I went, except there was something not quite right. I realised that whenever I listened to a band it was always the drummer and bassist that I took notice of. I thought that maybe I should buy a drum kit and start playing again, but because of the space and the noise that wasn't really practical, so bought myself a Squier Affinity P Bass and a 15W amp and bang! it all just fitted, I loved it, just wish now of course that I had chosen the bass all those years ago, could've been a half decent player now.

First bass owned and played. Squier Affinity P Bass. Still owned and played.

I had a problem with my new Squier with buzzing, so fiddled about with the truss rod and it's now sorted. More by luck than judgement I think, but if I can do it anyone can. Have a look at this link that I found, it gives you an idea on how to do it.

Definitely a bit steep I would say. I pay £12 for half an hour, which isn't long enough really, £24 for an hour is about average I reckon.

I'm reading this thread with amazement. How do they stay in business? They seem to have pissed off just about every bassist out there. I must go there sometime. Just to experience it myself.

Bass Big Muff is what I have decided on. It doesn't look complicated to use it's small and dedicated to bass, plus it's within my budget. Ordered one and hope to be able to play soon.
