I've had McGregor kit before, Mick, and it's really very good. Old school, tends to be weighty, but it's bullet-proof stuff and it does exactly what it says on the tin. I don't know what happened to the firm/brand, but if it failed then it wasn't because they made cr*p PA equipment.

As ever, bang on the money with that reply Chris.

Just love those control knobs, straight out of a DIY amp-build kit in the back of Practical Electronics ...

On the whole 'overkill' issue, can I just remind everyone that it's horses for courses. Like everyone else here, I've seen it done 'wrong' many times - completely OTT PA, enough cabling to re-stage Live Aid, and the punters flocking to the smoker's shelter to escape the racket. So we've learned from that. My bands go out with different-sized PA depending on the needs of the gig, we always have both backline AND PA support (kick drum only but we could add a couple of overheads if we needed them), plus we have @Silvia Bluejay out front with a tablet controlling the XR18. It ain't complicated, set-up from a standing start is always well under an hour, the amount of 'extra' kit is minimal. Result? It's a commonplace for us to get compliments from the punters on how good we sound, both the balance and especially the sensible volumes at which we play. Sometimes Silvie gets tapped up by pub rockers in the audience, asking her if she'll do the sound for their band! And of course we almost always get re-booked by the venue ...

Yes yes yes, but do the silks line up?

The early episodes are also fun for seeing Garfield Morgan drifting in and out of the series, before he became the third key member of the cast. Morgan used to live in Turnham Green (Chiswick) at the other end of my road, I'd see him all the time walking up to Chiswick High Road. In a Dennis Waterman twist, Rula Lenska used to live about 100 yards further up ... they must have been bumping into each other all the time.

Kinell ... how good is your eyesight? It flashed by so quickly that I didn't even see a bass!

Lining up silks - It's definitely possible, any tips?

This ^ seems like an excellent use of downtime during Lockdown. I hope to see a huge out-pouring of photos of carefully doctored strings. What we're far more like to get is a huge out-pouring of carefully doctored photos of strings ...- 45 replies

A lovely example of a mid/late 70s fretless Precision, and at a sensible weight, just 9.75 lbs. The 3-Tone Sunburst is really crisp, and the black p/g works well with it (even though I'm personally a fan of tort with 3TS). Rosewood fingerboard is completely unmarked, and has a delightful, mellow tone & feel. This is a very rewarding bass to play. Similarly, the neck is unmarked and shows no wear at all. Fender dates are notoriously ... erm ... imprecise, but this came to me as a 1976 while the serial number suggests either 1977 or 1978. I don't do the whole completely-dismantle-the-bass-and-photograph-the-bobbins thing, but if you buy the bass then you're welcome to come and dismantle it with me at my studio. All in all, this is a lovely bass in pristine condition, and priced to sell. The bass is in Harrow (NW London) and I am happy to deliver in person or meet halfway (depending on distance), doing so in a civically-responsible socially-distanced sort of way if you prefer. Alternatively, I have appropriate boxes plus plenty of bubble-wrap available and I'm equally happy to post using DPD as courier.

Everything I've done rig-wise in the last few months has moved me away from amp heads and pedal boards and into rack systems. Not being a big FX user anyway, I can't really justify hanging onto some of my less-used pedals. Here is the Hartke Bass Attack preamp pedal. It's simple, robust & versatile. Comes with original manual but I'm afraid the box eventually disintegrated. It's pristine and fully functional. V2 has been out for a while so you can no longer buy this model new. This is £40 posted to the UK.

Everything I've done rig-wise in the last few months has moved me away from amp heads and pedal boards and into rack systems. Not being a big FX user anyway, I can't really justify hanging onto some of my less-used pedals. Here is the Xotic Bass RC Booster, every bit as good as you'd expect and rock solid in use. There's velcro on the bottom. Other than that, it's pristine and fully functional, complete with original box. Andertons are doing this pedal for £89 now, so this is £50 posted to the UK. See also my listing for the matching Preamp pedal.

Everything I've done rig-wise in the last few months has moved me away from amp heads and pedal boards and into rack systems. Not being a big FX user anyway, I can't really justify hanging onto some of my less-used pedals. Here is the Xotic Bass BB Preamp, every bit as good as you'd expect and rock solid in use. One of the four little 'feet' has gone missing. Other than that, it's pristine and fully functional, complete with original box and price tag. I paid £150 for this at the LBGS some years back, so this is £80 posted to the UK. EDIT: I thought that writing "£80 posted in the UK" would be fairly clear, but I've had a series of enquiries from Germany and the Netherlands asking me if I'll sell it for the same price to Europe. Well I can post this in the UK for £2.90 using Hermes; posting it abroad means using DPD and paying £14.60. If you're on the Continent and you'd like to buy this pedal, you need to offer me £90, not £80.

Everything I've done rig-wise in the last few months has moved me away from amp heads and pedal boards and into rack systems. Not being a big FX user anyway, I can't really justify hanging onto some of my less-used pedals. Here is the unexpected Earthquaker Devices Pitch Bay, complete with original box, sticker and catalogues. There's velcro on the bottom. Other than that, it's pristine and fully functional. These are getting hard to find and routinely cost over £200 these days, so this is £100 posted to the UK.

Not being a big FX user anyway, I can't really justify hanging onto some of my less-used pedals. Here is the astonishing Earthquaker Devices Afterneath. No box or manual, I'm afraid, and there's velcro on the bottom. Other than that, it's pristine and fully functional. Cheapest I've seen these sell at (new) is £163, so this is £90 posted to the UK.
