Bass Guitar Magazine and Bass Player to merge
Happy Jack replied to Kevsy71's topic in General Discussion
If they want him to read any more than those, they have to pay him extra. -
God YES!!! How could I possibly have forgotten those six?
-
In fact, I've just realised that I still have it somewhere! Hey Mic Mac Moe, make me an offer ...

I used to use the Rolls PM351: https://www.musicstore.de/en_GB/GBP/Rolls-PM-351-Personal-Monitor-Station/art-REC0009328-000?campaign=GShopping/UK&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiJncBRC1ARIsAOvG-a4r6eqS_3YmWnPjxb-deg7h3ztqdpMXtAmUU0nPKSgB9ebPHHD1OyoaAvQnEALw_wcB

I haven't quite worked out why it's called the D400. Power: 350W/4Ω, 200W/8Ω

If I'm on a big stage with a decent audience and sound engineers and loads of equipment and a fully-landscaped Gospel group into harmonies and whatever then in-ears probably win. Playing in a 4-piece Grandad-rock band down at the Dog & Duck I'm more inclined to keep it simple.

I'd take this over in-ears any day: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/wharfedale-pro-wpm1-personal-monitoring-solution?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiJncBRC1ARIsAOvG-a4p5M2Hh74s0pjYkoNmRoN1SVVsD2Zw4cm03PjJdwgRcVZ2cOaZF70aAhCBEALw_wcB

Moving away from the endless (and predictable) list of famous singing bass players, unless you really believe that you are Geddy Lee or Paul McCartney you're not going to learn much from watching them on YouTube. I take lead vocals on about one song in five with The Junkyard Dogs - the main singer has a much better voice than me and (of course) as a guitarist in a 2-guitar band he can sing far more easily on far more songs. If you're looking for advice on how to do it, start with songs which are Already very familiar to you, things you don't even need to think about, Well within your range, so that you're not stretching yourself too much, Have basslines that are either simple or which you have played so many times that you can repeat on autopilot. Unless your voice has particular qualities - perfect pitch or wonderful clarity or a superb timbre - it's well worth investing in one of the Mic Mechanic range range: https://www.gak.co.uk/en/tc-helicon-mic-mechanic-2-tc169/908532?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiJncBRC1ARIsAOvG-a4QT1xvpe-BI507WxACfOmH5CoPso1jsGLNjTEhvd5QGkEFNjd6DeMaAn5jEALw_wcB or https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/TC-Helicon-Duplicator-Effects-Processor/1VBM?origin=product-ads&campaign=PLA+Shop+-+GENERIC&adgroup=GENERIC&medium=vertical_search&network=google&merchant_id=1279443&product_id=87250d1&product_country=GB&product_partition_id=126958483519&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiJncBRC1ARIsAOvG-a4jdDf2J_yfQwwmC3DKP7TpJLrBXlnx4TdxbCy2KuQwbOQMjTiQHKYaAgedEALw_wcB

??? If you have £230 available then buy a decent pre-owned Squier. That would be a much better bet IMHO.
-
Just because it looks (a bit) like the real thing doesn't mean that it will play or sound even remotely like the real thing.
-
I reckon you'll be on your own there, mate! Walk away and don't look back.

Oh don't you start, Geoff! It was your review of the SL4 that got me thinking, and my bank account is about to be substantially thinner as a direct result. Daft thing is, that SL4 would be a very bad fit for my needs anyway ...

Joining another band...staying in first?
Happy Jack replied to Mickeyboro's topic in General Discussion
When I was invited (by the singer) to join my Tex/Mex band the BL (call him Rik) was not keen initially because I already played in another band. After a couple of months I discovered that Rik also played guitar in a Country band. And that his Country band was looking for a bass player. So I put myself forward for the slot. Rik liked the idea of me playing bass in the Country band, but advised me not to mention the Tex/Mex band to the BL of the Country band because "he doesn't like it when people play in more than one band". You couldn't make it up ... -
In other news, after a failed attempt at a Doubler (which in truth I'm beginning to see as a bullet dodged for my needs), it now looks like I'm buying a Clarus SL2. I only have two 'pure' DB gigs in the diary for 2018, and they're ... erm ... both on Sunday. Hopefully the SL2 will get here in time.

Do you mean one of these: https://www.thomann.de/gb/acoustic_image_clarus_sl_s4plus_606ia_plus.htm?glp=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw5ZPcBRBkEiwA-avvkxca9PgcQJMXlYRykxiZ-9Y8_ERreCkrX7SQwEraeaW35Q1CbqzuCBoC9RsQAvD_BwE Very pretty and looks very competent, but the 606 and 607 seem to be single-channel heads. As to the Doubler, I've now heard the same thing from three users of that head ... you all put something in front of it to make it sound good! That rather leaves me wondering what the point of it is. If I use an FDeck and a Plat Pro in the signal chain, my DBs both sound fine through both a GB Shuttle 9.2 and a Trace Elf, neither if which are usually referenced when people are talking about heads to use with a DB.

Because it has no stiff cost optimization?

Joining another band...staying in first?
Happy Jack replied to Mickeyboro's topic in General Discussion
As with most things in life, it depends. Trying to play in three busy bands would be a nightmare, in two busy bands would be challenging. But I find playing in one busy band, plus two which only gig once a month each, plus two more which are one-off project bands for specific gigs (things like Swanage Blues Festival) is actually very easy to arrange. That's five bands. Deciding that One Band = Good and More Than One Band = Bad is a mite simplistic, if everyone will forgive me saying so. -
Top quality electronics: - The renowned electronic digital amplifier circuit used has been selected through numerous hours of listening tests - Very careful electronic schematic design and implementation - No stiff cost optimization which would have leaded to using low quality components and over simplifying the electronic schematic - Highly optimized power supply blocks with numerous independent regulation stages and many LC filtering stages

Erm ... you've not seen me in the kitchen then?

Well with ply sometimes it goes one way, and of course some times it goes another ...
-
So that's $870 vs the $995 for the Felix? These are truly lovely pieces of kit, and in the hands of players like Roger and Rabbie this sort of expenditure can be justified. Sadly, I ain't a player like Roger and Rabbie ...

Thanks Dan, but no thanks! That amp represents everything I like least about modern equipment ... it can't decide whether it's a musician's tool or a multi-purpose computer. The current homepage at Berg proudly boasts: "Now shipping with 4.22 firmware!". Well that will knock yer parametric mids into a cocked hat. You get a cute little LCD display and two Memory knobs and a Program button; it actually reminds me of my old Atari 1040. The most bizarre thing of all (for a doubler) is that I can see only one Input socket, although I'm probably missing something. Ah well. Bass playing is just great, seriously. It's such a broad church, and there is just so much variety available to us.
