Does anyone remember Dave Swift's talk at the Addlestone bass bash? He was talking about playing with Jools Holland, and he put some embellishments in. He said Jools would raise his eyebrows and say something on the lines of it being over the top, so he didn't do it again.
What he actually said was that Jools would say "that was all a bit Weather Report wasn't it?" which is a lovely phrase.
I see this written quite a lot on Basschat (not really aimed at you Tim). Why are Keyboard players in covers bands playing Bass lines?
Because keyboard players can easily play two parts at once, so when they play alone it makes sense for the left hand to be providing the bass part. (I used to play a lot of piano myself, and this is of course exactly what I did.) The tricky part is convincing them that things are different in a band situation, and that they should stop doing this. Add to that the fact (fact? claim? opinion?) that many keyboard players are frighteningly arrogant and disinclined to listen to other musicians, and you can see why so many musicians dislike playing with keyboard warriors.

Insurance for an irreplaceable instrument
Happy Jack replied to bassist_lewis's topic in General Discussion
Leave it. You're insured to replace a £2000 bass. In the event of a disaster, you'd have £2000 available to replace it. -

Loving the customer testimonials. We finally received the guitar. It is beautiful. Thank you for helping with the search for it. I got the bass sometime over the weekend - which was odd because the tracking seemed to indicate it was still in China as of Thursday. I was just wondering if you have received my last email with the guitar art. -

And you can always go dark and mysterious:

Stupid Girl - Garbage
Betty Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
The Look Of Love - Dusty Springfield (fabulous baseline BTW)
Edit: Bloody spell checker strikes again. That song does have a fabulous baseline, but I actually meant bassline. You want bright & bouncy?

They Don't Know - Tracey Ullman
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Pauper (aaaaargh! I swear that bloody spell checker is going to have to go. See if you can guess what I actually typed.)
There's A Guy Works Down The Chipshop - Kirsty MacColl
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
99 Red Balloons - Nena
Before anyone sneers at some of those, just try playing them. Barrel loads of fun for a bass player and every one a crowd pleaser. -
Give it time - unless there's a subtext you haven't shared, then there's no great hurry is there? If they're nice guys and you're enjoying yourself, keep it going. Don't forget that there is actually NO LAW against being in more than one band at the same time! Enjoy ...

LONDON - 5+ string bassist Required - Nu/Prog metal.

I have an 8-string bass and I fall into your age bracket ... erm ... twice. And I can spell 'new' properly too, if that helps? -
Also, Dave Dearnaley in Cardiff is a top luthier - he wouldn't have charged that much! He may have been scammed by a luthier, but then that would have been avoided if he'd checked with you first, as you'd have asked him to get a 2nd opinion, I'm sure.....
Seriously Marc, I wasn't having a pop at any real luthier - not intentionally anyway. My suggestion was intended to steer Mr. Newbie Scam away from Basschat. If he asked Dearnaley to do a job for him, then that's between him and Dearnaley. If it reads that I was insulting Dearnaley then my apologies to all.
In the event you do agree to pay towards some work then make it clear you will only pay the repairer directly.

And a copy of the receipt plus the luthier's number to give them a call, then I would tell them to FO anyway
I would advise very strongly that you do NOT do this, in fact that you do and say absolutely nothing that might imply that you felt any responsibility or liability at all. If this guy really is a scammer (for £230? sounds more like a newbie or an incompetent to me) then he'll know how to parlay your tacit admission into complete liability. Just say, as politely as you think appropriate, that there was nothing wrong with the bass when he bought it, and it sounds as if he's been scammed by a dodgy luthier. Ball --> his court.

OK, too easy. Time to raise the bar. How do you quote the bits you wish they'd said, rather than the tosh they actually wrote?

It was all good until he got to the bit where he suggested that those pills and potions that promise a larger manhood maybe don't work. Now that's nonsense ... those pills work just fine. No ... wait a minute ... -
Funny things, Hondo. Many were so utterly crap that they became known as Horrid Hondo, but some were lovely instruments. Different factories maybe? Or different countries (first Japan, then Korea I believe).
