This won't appeal to many here, but...
Hi jack, Do you have any sound clips of this lovely looking bass?
Regrettably not, Chris, and I will struggle to put any up within the next two weeks (I know, I know). It's a very, very nice P-bass and that's exactly how it sounds. Don't be fooled by the maple board and the usual cliches about that adding 'snap' and mids; this is a very mellow sounding bass which has a lovely vintage vibe to the sound. The neck is really quite shallow, which works well with a 19mm-spacing 5-string. I don't know how 'fast' it is - I'm built for comfort, not speed. -

I'm sorry. That was a quote from The Lord Of The Rings. I was trying to be funny!

One interface to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them?

The LEDs are red (of course) to match the red tint to the carbon fibre. The apparent soapbar is very misleading. At the time, I was mainly gigging my Status PJ4 (also currently listed) which had exactly what I wanted by way of pickups, so I persuaded Rob Green to build me a Streamline with - as near as possible - the same pickup configuration. I can't say that he was too enthusiastic, but he did it. He had to work within the confines of the existing mould though, and that meant that he put a split humbucker inside a soapbar cover.

For various reasons I now need to sell a few basses. This is a concept that I am struggling with, since normally I am buying rather than selling, and of course I don’t really want to sell anything at all. Hmmmm. How to decide what goes and what stays? Easy. Ask the market. I’m listing eight basses, none of which I actually want to sell. Whatever goes first will go, and once I have raised the necessary dosh I will de-list the rest. At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, I’m trying to raise money rather than trade basses. I’m also well aware that money’s too tight to mention (damn! I mentioned it) so I won’t be offended by offers. The basses are available to try and/or collect at my studio in Acton W3. I have no problem with posting them, but I always think it makes far more sense (along with being far more sociable) to come and try before you buy. ************************** Iceni ZOOT Chaser Lined Fretless 5 Powerful & flexible 18v Aguilar preamp. 35" scale. Nice use of Purpleheart woods in the neck.Strung with rounds for maximum mwah, but fingerboard largely unmarked. £500 http://s1128.photobu...%20Fretless%205 More photos on request, obviously!

The pole-pieces don’t line up with the strings, the vibe is odd, and it looks like it should sound dreadful. Actually, it really sings and the weird ’51 brings a new, aggressive dimension to the sound while still being very much a Precision. Sounds superb with a pick. Controls are V/V/T. One ding on the lower horn, but otherwise a very attractive bass. Weighs about 9lbs. £750 http://s1128.photobu...01984%20CURRENT
Hey Jack, do you really think the SE Bashers are able to tell the difference between Jazzes and Precisions?
Oh yes, the Jazz will be the one trying to play Portrait Of Tracey ...
I'd narrowed it down to two. So I was quite pleased with myself when it turned out that mine was actually one of the two I thought it might be. The other one was Happy Jack's 1957 USA Fender. Sorry, Jack Edit to add: - mine was the 2006 MIM with groundwound ('half wound') strings. Jacks had flats.
Shell, your MIM was the shock result of the session, far more so than the Hoppus due to the 'hot' pickup issue. For me, the low placement of the '57 was actually no surprise. There's a reason that Leo changed the pickup on that bass! My '57 is valuable because of its rarity, not because it sounds so nice. The low placement of my '66, on the other hand, was a genuine surprise to me. Even I scored it low, yet of all the (far too many) basses I own, including a number of high-end boutique Precisions, that '66 is comfortably my favourite. Hmmmm. All in the mind? All in the mix? All in Lozz's fingers? Something to ponder.
This is something that we should do at the SE Bash perhaps, with Jazz basses?
Oh I'm quite sure we'd be able to tell Jazz basses from Precisions.
Regarding the debate about how Motown was perceived at the actual time of its' heyday in the 1960's and early 1970's, if you look back at documents of the time like music journalism and things that other musicians said in interviews, more often than not the perception of Motown was that it was rather formulaic and trite throwaway pop music. That view was quite wrong, of course, as we all now realize, but, as so often happens, at the time many people were blind to the great artistry and superb musicianship evident on so many of those records. The critical and popular renaissance that Motown has enjoyed is similar to that of many bands from the 1970's, like ABBA , for example. At the height of their popularity they were derided by "serious" music fans and critics alike as trashy throwaway pop music, but nowadays they are revered by the very same people who hated them in those days as being great songsmiths and making timeless music of genuine quality . So much is a product of retrospect . Even bands like Led Zeppelin, despite selling a lot of records back in the 1970's, were never as widely celebrated or appreciated as they are now over thirty-odd years after their demiise. At the time, they were a cult act ( although it was a pretty big cult) .
Good post. I was born in 1956 so Motown formed a pretty substantial chunk of the soundtrack to my youth. I knew very few people who 'objected' to it, but plenty who (like me) thought it all sounded a bit the same, almost as if all those different bands had somehow managed to play the same as each other. Little did we know. In truth, I paid a lot more attention to the Beatles, the Stones, the Hollies, the Move, Manfred Mann, than I ever did to the Temptations or the Supremes. I was amongst the many who took the piss out of Abba, but now recognise just how good many of those songs were. Except Fernando. Can't agree about Led Zep though. I wasn't a big fan, so I didn't bother to go, but I remember them selling out Earl's Court for three nights in 1975. In those days, that was about as big as it got. If that was a cult following, then it was one helluva cult. One thing about last night's documentary ... as always I hated the interjections from current stars barely out of nappies who can't possibly have known much about the subject, but I had one genuine LOL moment when a youngster right at the end described Marvin's Grapevine as a song that made you feel 20% cooler every time you listened to it. Nail --> Head.

AFAIK the cachet of the slab-body is down to its association with Mr. Entwistle, rather than the other way around.
