1. Great to see you still hang out on Basschat, Ross, and some very tight playing there. Back over in NYC in three weeks ... might well drop you an email and see if anything's happening on a 'free evening'.
2.
Never heard that phrase before. What exactly is ringing out the room ?? Guess it's sending different signals to see where the limits are but like I said that's just a guess. Intrigued.
Google it ... there are some very good YouTube demonstrations of how to do it properly. Note that you need a 31-band EQ to do it in a meaningful way. For a pub band, that's probably overkill.
3. ... except a coffee table: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-Double-Bass-Case-/291178250521?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276
4.
Must have done, the creative labs sound system is from 2001 and has a seperate amp and a big sub woofer. No usb's though.
Bwahahahaha!!! Not at all sure that memory sticks had actually been invented by 2001 ...
5. The Junkyard Dogs will be playing next week's Ealing Beer Festival ( http://www.ealingbeerfestival.org.uk/ ) on Thursday evening in Walpole Park, 3rd July. 6. It is rigid enough to stay perfectly in tune, but it's also extremely bendable. So, it's crunchy but in a chewy sort of way?
7. I've used a Sabine (the earlier version of this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/sabine_fbx_2410.htm ) for the last five years. I treat it as entirely 'fire & forget'; it lives permanently in the signal chain and I never even glance at it. I bought the 2-channel version so that I could have it run independently on the monitors channel and (since this is a pub band after all) on front of house. Both the lead singer and I use personal monitors mounted on mic-stands. In the last five years, the only feedback issues we have ever experienced have always been traceable to them, and they're the only parts of the system not going through the Sabine. I probably shouldn't admit this, but we never ring out a venue. Ever. We've never had a need to with the Sabine in the loop. I've heard good things about the Peavey Feedback Ferret too. Currently on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sabine-FBX-2400-Dual-Feedback-Exterminator-/321443624080?pt=UK_MusicalInstruments_Other_Pro_Audio_Equipment&hash=item4ad7887490 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEAVEY-FEEDBACK-FERRET-D-/181445141979?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Outboards_Effects_MJ&hash=item2a3ef925db
8. Why is it that certain topics are so utterly predictably going to turn into train wrecks?

14. Sorry to hear this Sean. Get well soon Howard.
15. Quite surprised at some of the comments on this thread, particularly about Fender themselves. The Fender Custom Shop is apparently the 6th largest manufacturer of basses on the planet, so I'm guessing they have most customer demand pretty well covered. A decent relic is almost certainly the result of close personal attention by a skilled luthier. If you turn any skilled luthier loose on any custom job you tend to get a high-quality instrument, in fact you'd be disappointed if you didn't. For personal reasons I don't like fake (basses, watches are OK ) and I don't do relic'd. But I've owned a Bravewood and a Crinson, both of which were simply superb, and in a week of trawling around NYC last year the single most exceptional bass I picked up was a Fender CS Dusty Hill Precision. Go figure ...
16. Yup, just like Fender do. On no ... wait ...
17.
If explaining what the song is about is an essential for the audience's enjoyment of it (although IMO if you can't get it from the words then it's a fail) then deliver it clearly, succinctly and without hesitation.
Here's a song about walking down Baker Street. It's called "Baker Street". This song is about a woman I knew called Maggie May. It's called "Maggie May". The next song is about what happens when a lakeside hotel catches fire. It's called "Alright Now". No, wait a minute ...

19. With all this ill feeling about Antigua, it's only the olive component that does the damage. Remove that to leave a greyburst (as Alleva Coppolo do) and you get Now me, I'm struggling to associate that with picking my nose at any time.
20.
What is it about handles? Wasn't there a recent thread about similar problems with Barefaced handles? Edit: found it - http://basschat.co.u...age__p__2295963
Yes, I recall people queuing up to tell Alex Claber that he shouldn't charge such high prices unless he could also match the high-quality design and high-quality construction exhibited by other high-end manufacturers. Like Markbass. He must be wetting himself laughing just now.
21. We went to see a blues outfit on Bleecker Street last year, a 3-piece with their own backline. They were due to be on at 10:30pm after a solo bluesman had finished playing at 10pm. It could have been billed as 'Setting Up As Performance Art'. At 10:20 we were sitting directly in front of a completely empty stage, checking our watches, and thinking: "They're not going to show." Then a guy strolls out of the green room holding a snare drum, just a snare drum. Casually glances around a packed room, then puts the snare on the stage. Strolls back into the green room as another guy walks out carrying a chair, just a chair. For the next nine minutes there are just these three guys casually strolling on and off stage. At 10:29 the guitarist and bass player plug in. The drummer is still erecting his hi-hat. At 10:30 the guitarist says "1-2-3-4 ...." and they're playing. The sound is perfect, everything works, instruments are in tune, the levels are right for the room. Talking to other punters later, it's obvious that this is normal behaviour for Bleecker Street. Talking to the guitarist, it turns out that the drummer is a dep and has never played with the other two before.
22. I've only just seen this! Damn - I'd have liked to come along. Next year, please post a bit earlier, give me more of a chance to spot it.
23.
Ours gets to the venue 30 minutes before the rest of us do and he's just about finished by then. There's nothing worse than trying to set up around a pile of half assembled scaffolding.
Agreed, but our solution is different. We set up everything except the drums, because who wants to run PA cables through a forest of drums and cymbal stands? Paul the Drums builds individual pieces elsewhere in the pub while we set up the PA, lights and backline. When we're done, he simply moves each piece into position. Think of it as parallel processing.
24. Am I the only person who thought this was about kilts that needed soldering?
