Ahem ... it doesn't help that the first two fretless basses you tried were a Wal Mk.II and a Veillette! That's set the bar a bit on the high side, I fear. Ebanol doesn't sound the same as ebony, but it's a pretty good sound in its own right. If you didn't like the VM I doubt it was the sound of the board that was putting you off. Rounds give far more mwah, and plenty of beginners prefer them simply because of that - it's easier to make it "sound like a fretless". To my ears, a fretless sounds far better with flats on but half-rounds or groundwounds really do offer a decent compromise. The set-up is also key, since the difference between low and high action is (IMHO) accentuated on a fretless bass. One final point - you need to play with the right line-up to really enjoy fretless. If you play with other instruments which can also involve dodgy intonation (slide guitar, violin, etc.) then the potential for appalling discord is always there.

Music Written on Bass Guitar - Echo and the Bunnymen's Latest

I tried writing stuff on my bass guitar too, but a nitro finish is a bugger for ball-point pen. -
Status Graphite is the obvious choice there, either a whole bass or one one of their necks to retro-fit
Or maybe an old Modulus? In truth, when I play fretless I don't actually think of it as "playing fretless" ... I'm just playing bass. I'm really not a good bassist in a technical sense, and I don't play in a different way because I happen to be playing a bass without frets. The fact that the sound/tone/mwah/whatever is different from playing a fretted bass doesn't really grab me, since I have several different types of fretted bass and they all have a different sound/tone/mwah/whatever too.
Says they're wonderfully well made and sound great...and that's the Gen2 cabs not the new ones. (I don't own a BF cab btw) http://www.guitar-ba...idget-t-review/
Bah! They only give the Super12 a 94% rating and the Midget T a 97% rating. Pathetic review. Completely fails to complain about finish, handles or feet. Doesn't mention how much better all the competition is. Manages to avoid using words like fanboi or cheerleader. Instead, they have the temerity to write a genuinely impartial review based on the quality of these bass cabs when used as bass cabs. Hopeless. Call that journalism? -
The bass was imported from Japan last year, directly from Fujigen, it's has never been played and 100% mint, it's like the Rolls Royce of Bass guitars. The bass itself retails at the price of £1,999.00 so a real bargain is to be had here. So no hint of hype or over-selling there then ...

SoundCity 'Fender-look' 4x12 cab (in the North!)
Happy Jack replied to tremblap's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
No wish to de-rail your topic, but I just followed your link and read this: Do you have a silverface Twin Reverb Amp or Dual Showman Reverb Amp with the serial number A23373? A lot of people do and here’s a plausible explanation based on the evidence. Sometime in 1970, Fender ordered a bunch of Twin Reverb/Dual Showman Reverb chasses from their supplier. The machine that stamped the serial number into the back of the chassis got stuck on number A23373 and a lot of pieces were stamped with this number. It would have been very costly to destroy these units so two remedies were implemented. First, a foil sticker containing a 4-digit serial number was affixed to the chassis over the A23373. Unfortunately, these often peeled off or were removed by the amp’s owner thus revealing the A23373 number. The second thing that was done was the addition of another number stamped into the chassis as a suffix to the A23373 serial number, e.g. A23373-155. So how many of these chasses were made? Well, for the 4-digit serials affixed on a foil sticker, numbers as low as 0127 and has high as 3765 have been observed. Assuming they were all used sequentially and starting at 0100, there would be around 3700 non-master volume silverface Twin Reverbs and Dual Showman Reverbs out there. The amps that received the stamped suffix must also be added to this sub-total. The lowest suffix observed to date is A23373-39 and the highest is A23379-2916. Assuming the suffixes started with -01 and went to -3000, there would be around 3000 of these floating around. Of course, this is all hypothetical, but still plausible. Wonderful stuff, I'm still falling about laughing ... -
That bass is identical to the one I foolishly sold some years ago. I spent ages trying to replace it and finally found one in green. If you don't know about the SB320, this is a truly staggering amount of bass for the money - very high build quality, superb tone, light weight, hugely under-rated. I had mine strung with LaBella FLs (flatwounds) and it was absolutely righteous. At £200, this is probably one of the best VFM basses you'll see on Basschat this year.
Any drawbacks to an e-kit? I can't really think of any myself.
1. Drummers hate them. 2. They're much harder to fix when they go wrong. A couple of G-clamps and some gaffa tape simply won't work. 3. You can't use brushes, and mallets aren't good either. 4. Giving a drummer something with knobs, switches and functions can backfire ...

Interesting range of opinions expressed, but I'm surprised that no one has pointed out that usually it's the instrument that chooses the player. I've done no scientific research, but my feeling is that there are people who are just naturally guitarists, and people (like me) who are just naturally bass players.

Now shown as Free Delivery so I guess the listing has changed ... Incidentally, if I ever wanted a bass to hang on a wall as a work of art then this one would probably do the trick. I would certainly prefer to look at it than try to play it.

The Junkyard Dogs uses a decent Roland V-Drums kit for gigs where volume is an issue, i.e. we use e-drums to play more quietly. Our PA could easily cope with putting the e-drums through it but we prefer not to. Instead, the drummer goes through a stand-alone StudioMaster PAX12, a powered wedge chiefly intended for on-stage foldback. That means that he runs out of headroom far sooner than he would like (this is a good thing) and once he runs out of knobs to twist to 11 he simply can't get any louder. Once he stops getting louder, so does the band. Works for us ...
