1.
Not seen those before. The recent stock TBird pickups are much darker sounding than the old vintage ones, so replacing them is a popular mod; the only ones I was aware of are Thunderbuckers, Mike Lulls, Seymour Duncans, and these cheap ones: http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/Thunderbird-Bass-Pickup-Vintage-Style-for-GibsonChromeNickel_p_2287.html
I think these are the ones the guys over at LBO got moist over recently.
2.
I keep returning to this thread just to drool. Do you have any more pics?
I have the one above and (on my PC) a couple of the owner playing it and one of it at Mike Lull's place in Seattle. I've been quoted (sit down) £4.3k as a purchase price with a 4-5 month lead time; this time around I will need to sell kit to buy it, which isn't an issue.
3. That's black. Same finish as my JAXT4. The finish feels like suede. Now, someone buy some of my gear so I can get an order in.
4. I couldn't remember whether I'd replied to this, so there must have been a similar post previously. Remember those old science test you did at school? Question, hypothesis, method, result, conclusion? Question: We're down on a bill, headliners are providing cabinetry. Will I sound OK? Hypothesis: We'll skip past this, but suffice, bassist didn't bring any cabinets. You know it's not going to be great. Method: Well, I have my rack, let's feed a Sansamp RBI into the house PA. Result: Awful. Front of house was apparently fine, but onstage, nothing. Conclusion: Never rely on other people providing equipment and always take what you need.
5. Our EP hit Spotify, iTunes, Amazon (etc.) today. We're already up to at least three plays. I'm wondering whether I'll be able to retire early.
6.
Not the JAX T4!!!!!
'Oh, stop it Brains!'
7. *I've not bought it yet, have stuff up for sale. Let's see how things pan out there first.
8. Still here bump. Hit me up with reasonable cash offers. Potential purchase happening imminently elsewhere, so need to swell the coffers. P
9. It's a Mike Lull NRT5, but with an oversized body. Price is a bit mental, hence I'm having a clear out.
10.
Interested in trades?
Not this time, I'm afraid. I'm really just looking for a straight sale to facilitate a purchase elsewhere. Sorry!
11. Been giving some thought to going for another Lull bass, so I've made the decision to sell on two of my Thunderbirds to get the ball rolling. [s]The white/ivory Thunderbird is dated December 2004, it's been modded with a Babicz FCH bridge and Dunlop Straploks. It's pretty clean, aside from a small paint chip on the upper bout (where your forearm would sit) and another small scrape near the side mounted jack socket. Neither are visible when you're playing. I imported this from Japan about six or seven years ago. It has the Gibson hardcase and I have the original bridge should the buyer wish to revert it to stock. Neck is thin, fast, flat and the action is super low. It plays very easily. Given the relative rarity of this colour (and that Gibson aren't making any Thunderbirds at all right now), I'm looking for £950.[/s] SOLD! OK next up, an uber-rare Gibson Thunderbird Gothic. A bit of back history. Gibson made around 150 Gothics, they weren't promoted and it's guesstimated that about 50 made it to the outside world, the remaining 100-odd were retooled into Nikki Sixx Blackbirds. So you're getting a very rare Thunderbird, that's got the hotter Blackbird pickups. I've fitted it with Dunlop Straploks and a Babicz FCH bridge. The mahogany hasn't been filled so there's a nice grain-visible satin finish (see pics). I'm looking for (sit down), [s]£1,250.00[/s] [s]£1,200.00[/s] £1,150.00 for this. You simply won't be able to find another one, let alone at this price.
12. Hubba bubba. (The one on the left.) Now I just gotta work out how to pay for it. I suspect a fire sale upcoming.
13. I'll do my darnedest to try to watch everyone, even though fifteen minutes after coming off stage, sweaty, knackered and after breaking down your gear, it's actually the last thing you want to do. Insofar as etiquette goes, the younger bands we play with tend to be the ones who disappear right after their set and are happy to start carrying out their gear while a band is still playing.
14.
Great stuff Paul. We did one of these kind of gigs. Turned up and played and got a free promo out of it. You don't have much luck with your hands do you? My left elbow is now in a support brace and my left hand is still giving me a hard time. Nowhere near as bad as when we spoke though. Keep up the great work mate.
Four operations in...the (unoperated on) right thumb has settled down a bit, but the left one is giving me major issues now (it's overtaken the rightie), but it's up and down. Today I'm 100% pain free. I wore a splint all the day of the recording, but the lack of movement kind of exasperated the lack of mobility and the pain was excruciating (to the point of wanting to chuck up at one point - you can see me grimacing at one point on one of the videos). It just felt knotted up and needing a good crack to free up the joint! Incidentally, whether it helps or not, I've been taking turmeric three times a day for about the last week or so. It's a proven anti-inflammatory, worth a punt ahead of basal joint surgery and it does help a bit to stabilise the joint.
15. Midweek we did a three song session for students at Farnborough College of Technology. Studio production forms part of the student's course work; they set everything up and produce and there's a bunch of cameras up so another department can turn out a video. Elsewhere, FCOT have an FM license and broadcast to a thirty/forty mile radius. We were interviewed after. Video below. (Bass playing is a bit subdued as my left thumb was giving me considerable gyp and had been in a splint all day. Ack.) If you're local to Farnborough, hit them up for a session, they're desperate for local bands to experiment on!! http://youtu.be/06GOu9JjHDM
16. Can I ask a question? What strings are those? Coloured windings.
17. You could melt them in acetone and stain some wooden furniture with the solution. Sorted.
18. My advice? Save up and get it done properly. End of. It's too special to warrant a trip down to Halfords.
19. I run a two-channel floorboard and one channel has a Sansamp VTBASSDI at the end of a the signal chain. I never switch it on and honestly don't really get on with it... it's only there as it has an XLR output should any soundguy need to use it.
20.
What a really cool story - I hope it works well for both bands in the future I see they posted a pic of you all together on their page https://www.facebook...?type=3
Sans our drummer sadly, who was busy at the bar chatting up one of the punters.
21.
To quote Bob Seegar "Is that a woman or a man" on bass? Not that I'm judging.
The bass player is Crem, the Jim Carrey lookalike. Giulia (boyish looks, but most definitely a girl), is the lead guitarist.
22. All done. I'd say these two gigs were quite probably the happiest ones I've ever done; it was like the joy was tangible. Roll on October!
23. Mmmm. You looking for any trades?
24. Quite a few years back I struck up a conversation online with an Italian bloke (let's call him Clemente, because that's his name); we had a shared love of Gibson Thunderbirds, punk rock and pasta. That last one wasn't true, but hey ho. Anyhow, we kept in touch; mutual band love etc. A few months ago, he PMs me and says his band (Hawaii Zombies) want to come to London, play a couple of gigs and asks whether my band (Who Killed Nancy Johnson?) could facilitate this. Last night we played The Fighting Cocks in Kingston with them, tonight Readipop in Reading. Yesterday, I was like a kid leading up to Christmas. A weird excitement feeling all day, something I'd not felt in an awful long time. We loaded in about 5.30pm, they turned up shortly after. It was hugs all round and a very happy time was had by all. The Bully-bonus is that we've now signed on to do some gigs in Milan mid-October and possibly this might extend into Switzerland. I suppose if we can keep our sh*t together we might make this a regular thing. Anyhow, if you want a bit of decent Italiano Po-Punk in your life, knock yourself out:
25.
We shall see!
If it's any good, I might make you an offer...
