1. It might also be of interest to some people that Steve 'Dude' Barr, drug and money issues aside, was behind a couple of Lakland special editions that are now highly collectable. The 'Dudepit' models were pretty much the precursor to what happened with the Lakland Owners Group editions.
2. Jarl was the guy who posted links to music that he'd written/recorded. It was horrific stuff.
3. A quick bit of Photoshopping...lining up the bridge etc. says no, but then I think you probably knew this... P
4.
Cheers mate! Just picked up a fab pointy headstock old Fernandes Thunderbird as well - not unlike your Hamer one!
The Hamer is still with me! I still search regularly for one of those Fernandes MV65s...I think you had two or three at one stage.
5. I posted elsewhere that of the Spector headstock works great with the Thunderbird body.
6. I used to post to it and came across the archives by mistake earlier today. It was weird reading some of those exchanges and some of the drivel posted by one guy who kept on posting under different usernames.
7. Back in the olden days, before talkbass, bassworld and basschat, did anyone here use or post to alt.guitar.bass newsgroup?
8.
Me, I like the headstock - the 2+2 will reduce the neckdiving
Pray do tell how Dingwall have defeated the force of gravity
9. I've been (un)fortunate enough to spend hours in the car schelpping to Cambridge and back for work. Decided to create a playlist of everything by XTC on Spotify and let it play in chronological order. I wasn't a fan of XTC at all, it's been a recent thing, sure I knew the singles, but that was about it. I'll tell you, listening to Colin Mouldings progress through the albums has been enlightening. From the quirky/angular stuff at the start to the smooth (and in parts Mick Karn-esque) stuff in the mid-section. The only damning endictment for me was that while musicianship got better and better, it was to the detriment of the songs. To my ears they peaked with Drums and Wires. Don't really know how to wind up this post, but I suppose if you've never given XTC a listen, do it! P
10. There's a Charvel version too. Gary has too many good basses.
11. I had a Bongo 5HH in burnt orange. It was like a piece of art, played fantastically. Part of me wishes I still had it, but I had a Thunderbird incoming and well, you know where that story goes. Generally sounded great when a rehearsal started, but as the session wore on, I just tended to keep tweaking the actives up and up and up. In isolation at the end of the night it sounded horrific. Just pley the thing and keep your hands of the knobs. Hang onto it. P
12. That looks interesting, but IMO the headstock shape lets it down. Gibson aside, I think Spector nailed the two-a-side design on the Forte model. And yes, make it in China and sell it at a competitive price!
13. I had one of the Gibson Thunderbird NR reissues...when I had the pots changed, I had them set up three in a row. I have a preference for right-angled jack plugs; the front jack socket didn't work for me irrespective of where the pots were. Side-jack output all the way here, cable looped around the strap lug. Tidy.
14. Rates? In Reading? Bwahaha. Most places we try and play operate a discreet pay-to-play. I have a mate who plays drums in a covers band...they have an extensive amount of tunes that they can draw on, maybe 175 songs. It's really not a case of throwing something together; these guys are at top of their game, they work VERY hard at it.
15. I was just looking through the Mike Lull facebook page. This is pretty. P
16. I've got a JAXT4 in black...I can certainly vouch for the build quality and tonally it ticks all the boxes. The sunburst T4 looks lush, but for me it's solid colours all the way. I feel an order coming on again at some stage.
17. Listening just needs to be by convenience really. I have hundreds of CDs that rarely get used now. In the car it's Spotify bluetooth'd into the sound system. We have an iPod in a little dock in the kitchen, a Denon Piccolo network player in the extension (Spotify and NAS delivery) and a Chromecast Audio using the Zone 2 facility on an Onkyo surround amp in the lounge (Spotify and NAS again). Home PC is via cans or studio monitors. In the office/work I listen to Spotify on earbuds off my phone. Despite the variety, it all works well and ultimately it's just about music delivery. It all sounds fine. All this nonsense about 'I hate MP3', is just poop. I've got a mate who runs an extremely high end hi-fi business and regales me about audiophiles who can't tell their arse from their elbows. People throwing thousands at systems and listening to NAS based MP3s ripped at 128kbps.
