1. There's a Charvel version too. Gary has too many good basses.
2. I had a Bongo 5HH in burnt orange. It was like a piece of art, played fantastically. Part of me wishes I still had it, but I had a Thunderbird incoming and well, you know where that story goes. Generally sounded great when a rehearsal started, but as the session wore on, I just tended to keep tweaking the actives up and up and up. In isolation at the end of the night it sounded horrific. Just pley the thing and keep your hands of the knobs. Hang onto it. P
3. That looks interesting, but IMO the headstock shape lets it down. Gibson aside, I think Spector nailed the two-a-side design on the Forte model. And yes, make it in China and sell it at a competitive price!
4. I had one of the Gibson Thunderbird NR reissues...when I had the pots changed, I had them set up three in a row. I have a preference for right-angled jack plugs; the front jack socket didn't work for me irrespective of where the pots were. Side-jack output all the way here, cable looped around the strap lug. Tidy.
5. Rates? In Reading? Bwahaha. Most places we try and play operate a discreet pay-to-play. I have a mate who plays drums in a covers band...they have an extensive amount of tunes that they can draw on, maybe 175 songs. It's really not a case of throwing something together; these guys are at top of their game, they work VERY hard at it.
6. I was just looking through the Mike Lull facebook page. This is pretty. P
7. I've got a JAXT4 in black...I can certainly vouch for the build quality and tonally it ticks all the boxes. The sunburst T4 looks lush, but for me it's solid colours all the way. I feel an order coming on again at some stage.
8. Listening just needs to be by convenience really. I have hundreds of CDs that rarely get used now. In the car it's Spotify bluetooth'd into the sound system. We have an iPod in a little dock in the kitchen, a Denon Piccolo network player in the extension (Spotify and NAS delivery) and a Chromecast Audio using the Zone 2 facility on an Onkyo surround amp in the lounge (Spotify and NAS again). Home PC is via cans or studio monitors. In the office/work I listen to Spotify on earbuds off my phone. Despite the variety, it all works well and ultimately it's just about music delivery. It all sounds fine. All this nonsense about 'I hate MP3', is just poop. I've got a mate who runs an extremely high end hi-fi business and regales me about audiophiles who can't tell their arse from their elbows. People throwing thousands at systems and listening to NAS based MP3s ripped at 128kbps.
9.
Guns n roses use your illusion
Never was a GnR fan, but they had their moments I suppose! I've heard the argument that Use Your Illusion could have been edited to a killer single more times than I can remember; I don't know the albums at all (or their back catalogue either), so don't feel qualified to say whether this is a good selection, but I'm gonna fire up Spotify and create a playlist...
10. I've got a Lull JAXT4. £3k.
11. If anyone is interested in my input (I've owned a few Thunderbirds), certainly I'd like to see more colour choice. A few years back they did a limited run of deep blue (not Pelham) for the Japanese marketplace, so it is feasible for the paint shop guys to use a different colour. At the end of the day, if you want a decent Thunderbird built from a myriad of choice parts and finishes, just buy a Lull.
12. The same Martin Gordon who went onto The Radio Stars.
13. Don't forget Cheap Trick. They must have pretty much kept Hamer in business during the early days.
14.
Are they that good? Arnt there just as good basses out there that cost less?
I've liked the series one models since I first saw them, but the Cruises that followed (with the 2Tek bridge and more Fender-shaped body) didn't appeal. Sure there's other P/J derivatives, but for me the series one just oozes cool.
15. Yikes. How much? I'd like an 8-string. Not sure about a Standard.
16. I'm in negotiations for a white Cruise. It's in pretty awful condition. Will cost me $600 plus taxes to get it here. I'm in two minds; £500 more or less, then factor in some kind of refinish. Hmmm.
17. How long is the case, end to end? I'll measure mine when I get home. As an aside, Gibson and Epiphone cases aren't interchangeable either; the body shapes are different, similar, but different nonetheless. My Hamer fits the Epiphone case snug as a bug in a rug.
18.
Lets smash it in honour of Sixx!
I'm not sitting next to you this year.
19.
Didn't Nikki Sixx destroy them all?
He trashed a lot of FBIVs...there's apparently less than 30 globally, one of which is about ten feet away from me as I type this...
20.
That sounds interesting. I may have to try a valve swap on my EVO iii. It may sort out the close but no cigar sound the head currently produces.
One thing you need to bear in mind is this is a bit of experimentation on my part; I've been too reliant on the Sansamps (in various guises, into the effects return) and reached a point where I just wanted to try something else out. Ultimately (as posted elsewhere), I'll probably end up with an Orange OB-1 500/Korg DTR (or Pitchblack) in a 3U rack as an alternative.
21.
There's been one on Ebay for a while, it's in the US though, and pretty battered. Great basses.
I've seen it. Part of my reasons for not pulling the trigger is that the marks on the finish are kind of beyond buffing out. It needs a full respray which will compromise the serial number and the headstock logo. No idea how they did the white-on-black logo; maybe the whole headstock facia was a transfer and then clear coated.
22. I've had three, still own one (FBIV). Desperate for a series one Cruisebass.
