1. Honestly, it's a completely different bass and a Thunderbird in name only! It's a bit heavier and the neck is chunkier than any of my reverse Thunderbirds and whilst it shares the same pickups as the reverse models, tonally it's somewhat different, in all probability because of the extra wood in the body. I've found it's easy enough to get a similar tone out of both models by tweaking things amp-side. I really didn't get on with it initially - the reasons are documented elsewhere - but now things are sorted, I'm pretty happy. I've used it for about three songs live so far. Next Tuesday will be the proof of the pudding. P
2. I feel compelled to post this up (again). I bought this bass earlier in the year...if you know me, you'll know my love of Gibson Thunderbirds and this was a natural addition to the flock. Despite it being a new purchase, I fully intended a handful of mods; I'm no fan of the Gibson three-point bridge, so replaced that with a Hipshot Supertone and added Dunlop Straploks. There's posts elsewhere about the lack of dynamism of the tone, so the Gibson pots got replaced and are now lined up in a tidy row rather than the triangular shipping configuration. The only thing I really didn't like was the gleaming white scratchplate - by the time the original white guard will have faded to something off white, I fear I may already be in the ground - so today a lovely creamy pickguard arrived courtesy of Howard the Bass Doc. Even my wife said it looks good, and that's saying something. Anyhow, here it is. Ta-daaar! P
3. I posted a little complaint on the Tech21 Facebook page about the lack of data on their website about this unit; just don’t get how they can go through the whole rigmarole of designing, producing and shipping a unit like this and just sticking up a static image of the front panel. It's a great pity they can't do a dedicated video for each product rtaher than ahving to trawl You Tube for snippets of data.
4. One of the guys I went to school with was the guitarist on the Tom jones/Art Of Noise version. P
5. My band is playing the above venue on the 26th. Free entry I think. Cheers P
6. 'Late October' now. No worry. P
7. I'm surpised this has generated so many replies! Let me say I adored Too Fast For Love (I still do) and my Crue-going gig credentials weren't too poor early on either; I saw them at the aforementioned Donington (I actually saw the Andy Kershaw interview being filmed for OGWT too, although we had no idea who Kershaw was at the time), London's Dominion Theatre, Hammersmith (two nights with Cheap Trick), Wembley, but something [on vinyl for me at least], was missing after this. SATD is one of those albums that I have very fond memories of, but retrospectively (Looks That Kill aside) doesn't stand the test of time. I would cite the John Corabi period 'Motley Crue' album as my favourite one...it's a wonderful, mature, gritty album and it's a pity that they didn't get the chance to develop the line up further. Gone was Vince's whiney vocal and everything is just huge. If you haven't listened to it, give it a punt. P
8. As I'm a paid up member of Spotify, I've decided to locate and listen to a bunch of stuff that I will openly declare I loved when it was released, none of which I presently own. The experiment has been going pretty well to be honest until I hit upon SATD. Don't get me wrong, I adored Motley Crue, well, at the time. Happy memories of being bitten on the arm by Tommy Lee at Donington (and well, Donington generally), but it's thirty years later and I'm struggling to see the attraction. It's a truly awful album; there's nothing to redeem it. Oh, well, next stop Polytown. P
9.
Whoever managed to get their paws on the P Bass, how far do you reckon they managed to get home in one piece?
He gave it to photographer Ross Halfin. It's on his blog. They gave him a case as well! P
10. Great that it went well...I really hope to make it next year (Nik knows the reasons behind my absence). Would love to see some more pics! Best Paul
11. At the very least, I will try my darndest to get in and show my face if possible.
12. I'm sorry to be a pain in the ass, but I'm going to have to pull out (my father in law has been hospitalised overnight and realistically I can't just leave my wife and go off on a jolly). Also Darren the drums is sidelined with a very bad bout of the flu. I was so looking forward to meeting up and even Darren had tempted me with a brekkie at McDonalds in Camberley. Sorry folks P
13. I met Mark White once. Worst BO ever. You could taste it. <shudder> P
14.
My VT Bass rack is due to arrive next week - yeah!
Where from? I had it in my basket at Th*m*nn, but it's not listed anymore. P
15. I did one a while ago on a six string Strat body for a lark - I don't have the body any more so no pics. We just followed a You Tube video...there's plenty out there. Just make sure the body is primed to your desired base colour and rubbed down so the paint will adhere. Dustbin of water, dunk in guitar body, add the paints (we used little pots of model paint), mix lightly, pull out body slowly. Allow to dry somewhere. It was an OK project...a bit of Sunday fun. P
16.
I wonder if they'll make a Leeds version...
There's a guy in the US who converts Tech 21 stomps into 1U rack units. He can add additional functionality too. Very good stuff apparently. In addition, yes, I'm gassing for one of these. Will probably dump the BDDI and upgrade to a 4U rack. Looking forward to this. P
17. Lovely and I'd like to add a VS, but right now I'm gassing for something else. *Edit: Julian is a great bloke too...he fixed my NR and has worked at one time or another on all my stuff; I am quite an agressive player. Two thumbs up there! P
