What worries me is the pure Marmite factor of Rics
In my formulative years, it came as no surprise to me that Steve Priest (Sweet), Geddy Lee and Bruce Foxton grabbed my attention. I did go through a phase where I just adored them - obviously given the above - but aside from a very nasty Hondo II copy I didn't bite. As the years rolled on, I fell out of love with the body shape and it seemed that irrespective of the bass used, I was always getting a close emulation of that 4000-series tone, so that kind of satiated my desire. I've seen a handful of very pretty all-black 4000s recently that have made my heart skip a beat and [lack of a mortgage] has reignited my interest. I guess I'd just like to try one for a rehearsal and see whether I'd been making a mistake in non-ownership over the last thirty years. P

Concerning the pickups/loom I'd certainly be interested in how close and replacements sound to the original units. I've been a big fan of that Geddy Lee/Chris Squire sound, but I'm just no fan of the 4000 series shape; it just doesn't do it for me. I considered installing SDs on a project bass, but the over cost turned me away. (I'd be interested in the original Rickenbacker pickups if the project came with them though.) I'm assuming that SD/Bart have done their homework and you'd hope that the replacements go some way to emulate that clank. I'm following this thread with interest. Good luck with it. P

Just purchased an Ashdown 2x10 from Barny; top bloke and a pleasure to deal with. Shameless plug; check out his band as well: Thinking For Tuesday - it's good stuff. Best P
This is a fantastic amp! I ran one of these for several years and it never let me down. Like you say, clean sounds are not really its thing, but as a killer-sounding rock amp with built-in dirt, there's not much to touch it, especially at that price! Totally wipes the floor with an SVT-3 for tone IMO... Good luck with the sale!
...and it's still giving sound service sir. I f2cking love it. P

There's nothing to adjust in the body cavity. There's a handful of threads over on the EB forums about low output; largely down to pickup height and also one of two posts concerning output ratings against SD quarter pounders. Like I say, I shall see what happens in the next few hours! P

Jesus, I'm not getting into a fight or anything here, I just wanted advice...this is why I wanted to ask some questions via PM's not litter the thread with crap about whether people like Bongo's or not. I will also say here that compared to the DJ5 and my Geddy Jazz, it's a very quiet bass. As my post [to Wayne] says, I have worked on the set-up on the bass over the weekend and I'm rehearsing with it tonight. I was distinctly underwhelmed with it last week; maybe it'll be different this evening. We'll see. P
May I politely ask why you can't post the questions on the forum? Am I missing something?
I just wanted a couple of direct answers about set-up and things; I don't want to see pictures of people's Bongos. For your consideration, after Wayne PM'd me, this is pretty much what I sent him: 'I did a trade on a Bongo a week or two ago; and am looking for a bit of info about general setup, pickup height and overall output. It's a 5HH. I rehearsed with it last Thursday, and while for at home use it was fine, in a live context the action was way to low (lots of zizz and little sustain), the output was horribly low and it didn't really have anything like the impact I was looking for (let's face it, most Bongo owners allude the bass is mental and mad as cheese). Also, the B-string was very flappy. I spent an hour setting it up over the weekend and while I'm a little happier, I was also interested in finding out whether it just had a bad day at the office.' The bass has had new batteries and strings fitted by me. The bass plays nicely enough now, but in hindsight I've been using passive basses for a while, which have a much hotter output. At the settings I had the amp at last week and with my Lakland going through it, you would have heard me in the next county. The Bongo was so quiet. That was it. P
a wild guess .. if you fill the top string nut slot and cut a new one next to it, it usually fixes it (I've done it to both the ones I owned.. )
I haven't a clue what you've just posted! I'd like to though... It's just general stuff about setup etc. P

If you own a Bongo - or more specifically if you currently own a 5-string model - can you drop me a PM please. I have a couple of questions relating to setup. Cheers P

Geddy Lee pretty much has the tone nailed for me. Rickenbacker, Wal, Steinberger or Fender Jazz makes little difference. You all know what he sounds like... P

Years and years ago (before I knew anything about Doug Wimbish), I distinctly remember seeing an article in a US Guitar magazine - he was holding a Spector bass, but the finish was just amazing. It was a transparent colour finish in dozens of colours over a maple top. Never seen it since. Now that was lovely. These signature editions don't look anything different to the standard editions (Gary will probably say otherwise)...it does seem a little over the top $$$. P

I hate to quote the blatantly obvious, but these basses have been cropping up in the US eBay for the last month or two. If anyone is so desperate for one of these and can't wait for them to arrive here, then get online and take a punt on getting one from the US - exchange rates, while not great, are favourable right now, but factor in shipping and duties and you'll at least have one a few months before they come out here. I'm sorry, but in these days it's a global market; you shouldn't need to say something isn't available or put deposits down and wait patiently for a UK distributor to take their thumb out their ass and get things moving. We all know how it works here...we get it later than everyone else on the planet and pay double for it too. P
Ive never heard a bad word about them. I was gas'ing for one for ages until I got this shuker (which looks a lot like it actually except its just got jazz pups) Looks like they keep their value a LOT too, £600 new, £500 2nd hand. I was really tempted to buy it new even without hearing it first.
I picked up mine from the US - eBay. £345 at the time - incl. hardcase. shipping was c.£70. Bargain. The guy (seller was thomasldh) was selling Aerodynes almost exclusively at the time; he was knocking out dozens of them. P

Clarky I've had a none more black Aerodyne (I'm holding it in my avatar), a Precision Bass Special and going back a few years, an old Ibanez Roadster all with the P/J configuration. I gotta say from the outset that my old Precision was a completely different beastie to any of the aforementioned basses; it was thirty-odd years old and the pickup hadn't a Fender issue in fifteen years, so in truth I can't really comment on whether the sound is replicated. To be honest (as is the case with all my basses), I'd always tended to play these guitars with everything full on...no quarter. The stock Aerodyne was easily the best of the bunch. While I can understand the merits of each pickup, I've always have always tended to put as hot as signal as possible to the amp and then let amp do everything else. I've also very little experience of current Precisions. Gotta say though, when I saw the bass I posted, my heart did a little flutter. Best P
Sorry, bit of a dumb@ss question but does the P pickup on a Jazz-bodied P/J (like the one from Guitar Emporium above) acccurately replicate the sound of a P-bass or does its placement (which looks slightly nearer the neck to me than on a P-bass) mean slightly different tonal characteristics?

The song was sh*te as well).
+1. There's too many [US] bands doing material like this and TBS don't particularly excel at it (any more)...I remember when the whole emo thing was kicking off...JEW/Midtown/Drive-Thru thing. I genuinely thought that TBS had something when the Tell All Your Friends album came out. Watching that video was a bit strange too; the musicians have a strange visual presence...visually they looked a little like Los Lobos, with Pete Wentz on bass and Albert Hammond Jnr on guitar. Lakland BTW. P

I really like this configuration; I mean REALLY like. I've had a couple of J/P pickup basses and can't really say anything negative about them. I can't justify any more basses though! £999 at The Guitar Emporium. P

Highly recommended trade with Ville. Smoooooth. P

I've had a DJ5 since last December. I hate to say I can't comment on P5, but I just didn't like what it looked like when I saw it, it just looked wrong. I've tended to use the DJ5 as my first choice bass since then. It's comfortable and versatile. Love it. P

I built something from parts about a month ago. To be honest it was a lot of fun sourcing stuff from here and the US, but on the downside, the sourcing of parts kind of preoccupied me a little too much...it was rather like an addiction. That said, it plays really nicely (with a minimum of tweaking), although I'm waiting for the control plate to come back to me so I can really fire it up. There's a thread over on the build area of the site. It cost about £120.00 all in. I'd like to do another, but my good lady says five basses is enough. On the upside, I've had two requests to build others. One from a mate and another from a student I teach. I might. P
