I know this response is as obvious as it comes, but sure there may be a drop in level, but in most cases wouldn't this be solved by raising/lowering said pickup? P

On the back of my earlier post, I've just given elements of [i]...Exit Stage Left[/i] a quick spin. Still sounds woolly and lacking clarity, so for me at least that supports what I've thought over the years. I'm in no way going to backtrack from what I wrote, but you have to realise that the dates these albums were released was somewhat of a transition period for me (and likely most music savvy teens in this country). To a degree, Rush were fast turning into the dinosaurs the whole punk thing had turned against four or five years beforehand and to tell the truth, my head was far more into London Calling! and Obscure Alternatives than songs themed around black holes and honeydew. I've just looked down the tracklisting of the dozen (or so) studio albums that followed [i]...Exit Stage Left[/i] and I reckon I know three or four of the songs; mainly the first track of a handful of the albums. P

My Rush phase lasted about five years; started off with the first live album (All The World's A Stage), after which I naturally dug into their back catalogue - Rush/Fly By Night/Caress of Steel/2112 - and carried on through to the second live album (...Exit Stage Left) which has to have the worst production of any Rush album and kind of turned me off off them. (I don't know whether it's been remixed on subsequent reissues.) For me, the first live album has everything you would ever need to know about the guy's playing...that sound, the fluidity of the playing, the runs, the way he works/worked off Neil Peart, plus, the sleeve is great! By comparison the studio albums it draws from are very lightweight affairs and this displays the material with a completely different dynamic. For my 14 year old ears, it was all a bit mental. And drawing from that album, it has to be Bytor and The Snow Dog that's the highlight. P

I've had a Bongo for about three months now - an orange 5HH - and have to say I'd liked these basses (well, from a distance) from the first time I clapped my eyes on them. In reality, it's been a bit of a love/hate thing; I got the bass on a trade here and the setup wasn't really to my liking (strings buzzy/action low, pickups too high)...I took it along to a jam and actually felt well depressed after; it sounded great at home (at low volume), but in a rehearsal it was pretty awful. No sustain, little output, just horrible. I spent a couple of hours tweaking the setup it and while it's [i]better[/i], even after a handful of jams the GAS was arguably more exciting than owning the real thing. I don't want to come over as sounding too underwhelmed, it plays great now, looks sweet, balances nicely, but I'm still not wholly happy. I guess at heart I'm a simple bloke as well; I prefer volume, or volume/tone, or volume/volume/tone (as opposed to volume/select/midsx2/tonex2) and I tend to find that when I start off at a jam it sounds nice, but four hours later (after having to tweak constantly) every control on the thing seems to have moved to the 100% position and it sounds pretty terrible. I would also say that it hates strings that have been on for a while. Anyhow, I'll stick with it for now. It's back in the spare room and (for now at least) the Lakland is back on top. P

Like it says. Two sets off the Lakland and Bongo; 40/65/80/100/130, superlong. Still some life in them (they're good as boilers). I'm not going to bother splitting these. The set off the Lakland was strung through the body BTW. First PM secures, otherwise in the bin on Monday night. P

I had a five-string streamer for a while. Honestly it was very nice and certainly a good step up from what I was playing at the time. It was however a bolt-on and it went through three necks before Warwick put a wenge one on, and after that (well for me at least) it was close to perfection. It was comfortable, great phat tone, nice B-string. A few years after I got it, we had moved house and I sold the bass on to cover some building work (something that also happened to the Aerodyne that's in my avatar). Sad time. I don't know if I'd go back to be honest, the Lakland is great and I'm kind of falling in love with my Bongo. I'd echo the words of an earlier poster...it's a sleeping classic. P

I really like the headstocks on these models over the thinner designed ones that come on the LX and US NS five strings. They're more in keeping with the overall Spector vibe. Have a bump on me. P

Or something?[/quote] I've never really been a fan of pedals and such; I've always been a bass into amp/POD>amp, and I'm not about to get all loved up about moving Hartke products, but I picked up a Hartke Bass Attack pedal along with my cabinets. It's tamed my Bongo somewhat, but at the same time given me a tad more clarity and boost. To use a word that's already been used, it's transparent. Can't quite explain it. Reasonably cheap and quite cheerful. P

I have a pair of MIM Jazz pickups...the posts on the A & D strings stand pretty proud, can I tap them in a bit or will this cock things up? Never had this before. Cheers P

Looking to see whether there are any interesting trades against this bass. I really had the hots for a Bongo and landed this 5HH a couple of months back, but it's not for me. It's difficult to quantify exactly why this bass doesn't work for me; being 100% honest here, it's quite beautiful to look at (it's a great piece of art), monster tone, but this is the only active bass is my collection and I just find it difficult to use as a back-up bass as it's so mental compared with my DJ5. Aside from the prerequisite little-ding-at-the-end-of-the-headstock the bass is mint. Desert Gold finish, Music Man hardshell case, Dunlop Strap-loks, custom pickguard. At present I'm struggling to think what I could trade this against, I've been racking my brain most of the afternoon...Gibson Thunderbird (has to be white), a Spector 5-string NS, maybe even a Rickenbacker 4001/3 so long as it was black. Don't know. If you have anything [i]interesting[/i], let me know. Anyhow, here's some pics: P Edit: If I can make a little edit here; obviously I'm reasonably aware of what the bass is worth from a monetary perspective, so it's market value is more than a Thunderbird, and maybe on par with a Spector or Rickenbacker. I'm not going to trade this away and make a loss; I'd sooner hang onto it and punt it again in a few months if this was the case. I'd just like to thank my wife for pointing that out to me. If it stands for anything, I teach a mates daughter and she has one of their 3/4 sized P-bass clones (...yes, in pink). I spent about an hour tweaking everything and after that it sounded schweet and played like a dream. P

Over the years you get a bit jaded with the service from retailers. A few years back I would just take the typically British route ('Ho-hum, things will sort themselves out in time') and not complain and seek something back. Ped, I hope, refund aside, you're hassling them for something...free strings (anything!) to restore some kind of confidence/goodwill with Dawsons. I think your quote of [i]Cheers Dawsons/Roland, 6 weeks wasted[/i] doesn't really sum up the aggro and inconvenience. Sending you the wrong unit twice isn't anything to do with Roland...it's probably someone putting the wrong SKU on it at Dawsons, putting it in the wrong picking location in their warehouse (and the picker just pulling it off the shelf) or the person doing the order not reading what's actually on the pick note. I have been there at the old company I worked at (medical goods...not good). Take them for something mate. The more people do complain, the more these companies will actually improve long term. P

Years ago I was unfortunate enough to secure a Sunday lunchtime slot at a pub in Hackney: It was a bit of a trawl up, but we got paid in beer, chicken wings and a bit of money. One Sunday, two fat blokes are having bit of a jostle by the bar over some chicken wings that had just come out. I didn't see the start of it, my drummer threw a stick at me and I just looked up to see one of the blokes punch the other one full on the nose and hear the sickening crack of bone. He went down and then the whole place erupted. It was like a cowboy movie. we just kept playing, inching closer to our equipment to stop it from getting damaged. Two blokes were on the floor in front of me beating the crap out of each other. The owner was swinging a pool cue around his head shouting 'Not in my pub! NOT IN MY FAAAACKING PUB!' and hitting anyone he could. It all stopped after about 90 seconds, with all factions making a swift getaway and no doubt carrying it on elsewhere. In hindsight, it was hilarious. At the time, I was shitting myself. Happy days. P

Don't get me wrong, I was actually considering this unit (the X3) some time back, but at the time Line6 hadn't released the unit (in the US or UK for that matter), so my interest just stalled and I went with my Tech21 head. I guess this should be a lesson to all manufacturers; don't whet people's appetite with equipment specs when it's not going to arrive for a year. As I hit my mid-40s I finally came to realise that waiting a year for something to arrive chops a big chunk off the time I have left on the planet. Can't sit around with my thumb up my ass waiting for the corporation to release product. Buy now, worry later. Chaps I need to move these in about a month: MAG 4x10 MAG 2x10 MAG 1x15 The 4x10 is a few months old (from Thomann) and has been out of the house for jams on five or six occasions. The 2x10 I picked up from a fellow Basschatter around a month ago - home use only along with the 1x15. All sound gear in great nick. Looking for £175 for the 4x10, £100 each for the 2x10 and 1x15. You all know what these babies look like, so no photos. Cheers Paul
