I actually like that Mott The Hoople track, but then I really like Mott The Hoople. It think it's this one that if you You Tube it there's a clip of them on TOTP and the actress who plays Marlene in Only Fools And Horses is 'singing' backing vocals. Insofar as a track ruined, while I'm not particularly a big fan, No Doubts' Underneath It All is a great until this frankly ridiculous West Indian gurning comes in. Ruins an otherwise good song. Even ruins the video. P

Morning everyone. I know there's a plethora of information out there about refinishing/respraying guitars. Here's my story... I'm sourcing a body for a project that will need a bit of workl it's presently finished in a vintage sunburst colour and I'm looking to do a little work on the body - filling holes (ie one tone control hole/screws etc) and fixing any major dings. I might move the jack socket. I'll probably use a two-part epoxy for any repairs to said holes and finish it in solid black gloss. Insofar as finishing goes, I've read many, many accounts suggesting sanding back to bare-wood, priming, painting, buffing OR just simply rubbing down the body with 350+ grit wet and dry to give something paint can key into. From experience with spray [car] paint, it just about sticks to anything without much problem (I sprayed a Gibson G3 with two coats of Datsun Sunny red on a whim one time and that never came off...so sorry if you own that bass now). I'm after a reasonably decent, long-lasting and nice-looking finish, and I guess it doesn't bother me that much if the end result isn't showroom finish. To quote someone who posted here, so long as it looks good from a few feet away, I'll be 100% happy. So what's best? Cheers P
This week: Weezer! Ordered the Blue Album (delux), Pinkerton, Green and Red. All but the Green Album have appeared so far, finally glad I've made the effort to get into them, they've always been around during my teenage years and I've always been interested in their singles, never actually bought anything though.
You want a CD of a ton of other Weezer stuff? to me it looks like the bastard son of three manufacturers. Bridge looks like a Thunderbird, body is distinctly similar to those old Kramer aluminium/wood necked basses...headstock give a subtle nod to early Aria Pro II models. P

It's too soon for me to make an offer, but (from one basschatter to another) I would like to hear a sample recording of something in a loud band rehearsal enviroment to see whether it lives up to expectations. Good luck with the sales BTW. P -
Do you not think that the body apes the Warwick Katana? I'm not a fan of models where a chunk of the body has been cut away behind the bridge. Sorry! Each to their own. P

Who's up for another South East Bass Bash?

I'd be happy to join the party. I'm half-way between Reading and Guildford, so either would be OK with me. What's the form then? Aside from my 12, right now I don't have anything particularly outstanding to to bring to the party...I mean, everyone knows Ashdown stuff, everyone knows Fender... P -
Dare I say it, I've tried a ton of stuff in my past and the happiest I've been soundwise is through a POD into the effects return on any amp. I know this kind of bucks the trend of a simple amp/cab set up. All I ever wanted was to get was to get that Geddy Lee clank or a Mike Starr/AiC kind of sound. The POD comes very close at the turn of a dial. Very close. P

I had an Orange Matamp years ago...late 70s. Bought it at this warehouse place in Chalk Farm. I think it was actually a guitar amp. Sounded beautiful and was super loud. Heavy on the valves though. Last act it had was when it caught fire during a rehearsal (we were jamming Japans' Adolesent Sex at the time...smoke was pouring out of it, then flames started licking up the back. We got the plug out of the wall and threw a load of water on it. Eventually sold the burnt out unit for refurb to a place on Denmark Street for £50.00. P

Make sure you go with a glossy option. we usually give away CDs after gigs...can I suggest that you download the ExpressIt software (free) to aid better printing. While it's great for printing, design your label in [a program like] Photoshop - it's pretty easy to make a square template with a layers showing non-printable areas then build your designs, then save the file as a hi-res jpeg and then pull it in ExpressIt. Works a treat. P

Anyone have any experience of these strings or know of a UK seller? Very favourable review on bassplayer.tv. Interested in trying them. Cheers P
Nothing wrong with Warwick basses that couldn't be levied at ANY bass! Fenders... some people like em, some people don't. Musicman... some people like em, some people don't. Sandberg... some people like em, some people don't.
This is very true. I was in love with the shape of the Streamer more than anything else, when I bought one years ago I used it until the style of music I was playing changed and I got a Precision. I'm kind of tiring of that after about ten years - don't get me wrong, it's a lovely bass, but I need a change - so I'm likely to be going with a Lakland DJ5 as soon as the money kicks in. My old Warwick had three different necks on it until they changed it for bubinga one. This was a first series Streamer bolt-on (I think it was called an LX model even back then) - and the necks (maple/evangol? laminates) weren't that stable. After they fixed the neck, it was a wonderful, versatile and phat bass. P

I've always maintained that original material is my primary goal...I never ever wanted to play anyone elses songs. Recently we gigged in Reading and (as it was a paying gig) we were asked to throw in some covers. We did a couple each of Blink182 and Feeder and some more obscure stuff...IMO it was these songs that let down our set...the original material went down much better and we played our stuff with more passion. I felt a bit used considering my originals only stance. I guess if it's your only source of income (or even a potential source of income) then maybe you need to consider what's more important...your integrity or playing Chris de Burgh covers. Personally, as music doesn't pay my bills, it's integrity as far as I'm concerned. I hope never to play Every Rose Has A Thorn ever again. P

Schooldays...late 70s. Three piece. We had a different name every week. Uncle Herbert...Individual Cheese Portions...The Dags...Funcrime. We sounded like a 78rpm version of Rush meets the Police. The guitarist went on to play with Go West, Tom Jones, The Art Of Noise, then write for Hear Say, Ronan Keating, and a bunch of other people. I fell into an office job. P

Fender Precisions - they're fantastic
NancyJohnson replied to Ham fisted Bass's topic in Bass Guitars
Years ago I had a brief conversation with Mark Plunkett, who used to play for the late Little Angels. They played at a club owned by a mate of mine before they were doing a Wembley show supporting Van Halen. I asked why, when he had a rack of Spectors et al, he favoured an old Precision. He just said, 'a million people can't be wrong, can they?'. I don't know if his numbers were that accurate (but his estimate must be on low side), but if it was a rubbish bass, Fender would have stopped making it years ago. I do love mine (even if the E is very boomy), but it's nearly time to retire it. Soon. Soon. P
