I'll chip in, but don't take anything I post as being accurate as I've recently been accused of both being deaf and not having a clue by a member on these pages recently. Ignore what's sitting on top of it in the photo below, but seriously, consider Darkglass enclosures...for a while now I've been looking to go with a pair of 1x12s, but did consider a 2x12. Tried a pair of Aguilars, a pair of Barefaced, but as things panned out, the 1x12 arrived on my birthday in December...I'll add a second one later, or if Darkglass get around to it, a 1x15 so long as they can squeeze a 15 in a cabinet the same width (they should be able to). As things stand, I adore the 1x12; it doesn't ponk. They do a 2x12 (https://www.darkglass.com/dg212n/) which is under 20kg, the 1x12 is 12.5kg,specs are here(https://www.darkglass.com/dg112n/)

Shazam is just the best app ever invented!
NancyJohnson replied to ubit's topic in General Discussion
I have a huge/diverse playlist on Spotify; started out as a few guilty pleasures although it's been expanded immeasurably. Nothing better than sticking BBC Berkshire's Melody Hour show on on a Sunday night and Shazamming every other track and appending said playlist with it. I just stick the playlist on shuffle and boom, you're away. I mean, where are you ever going to hear Richard Van Dyke's Jolly Holiday playing after Argent's Hold Your Head Up?, -
I remember the first time I upped the ante and had two basses...I reckon I was 16 or 17. Living it laaaarge. An Ibanez Roadster (RS924) and a Gibson Grabber G-3. One was great, one was terrible but quite aerodynamic on at least three occasions.

@TheGreek has summed it up succintly enough. I'm down to six and feel I have all bases covered for whatever I'm called on. Half are in cases, three are on stands (in different rooms) and I'm only really gravitating towards one of these day to day (and this is only because it's new to me, passive and plugged in 24/7). If you're happy with one bass, that's fine, but just make sure it's the one. Play many, ask for advice.
-
In phase/out of phase/whatever. With a passive dual pickup system, there's always an inevitable roll off when both the pickups are open (I'm sure someone here will be able to back this up with an equation to support the reasoning)...also worth remembering that despite the allusion the pickups are in isolation, everything is still linked together in the loom, so you're reliant on the pots working 100% with zero bleed (unlikely). The only way to isolate would be a manual pickup switch (like a Les Paul), where you're physically removing the pickup from the circuit. I installed a Geezer Butler PJ set into a bass recently (these are solderless/plug and play); following installation, either of the pickups was louder in isolation than the other, but played together the output dropped. Nothing wrong/incorrect with the wiring, it just happens. It's then simply a case of reverting to pickup height to balance things out to your own preferences should you wish to play with everything open. Mine's all sorted...100% happy.

What are you listening to right now?
NancyJohnson replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
The new Fleetwood Mac Live deluxe. Sadly, it's Spotify. What? Do you think I'm made of money? -
Remembering back, they supported us at The Dublin Castle one time, two trolleys, two guitars, two Fender combos and Pedaltrains, plus snare/cymbals/kick drum pedal. Amazing really.
-
There was a thread here a while back about trolleys...I used to use a two-wheeler fishing kit thing, incredibly robust. Interestingly, we gigged several times in London with another (London) band who used the Tube instead of driving; the drummer carried most of her drums on one trolley like the Wolcraft one above, while the guitarist carried the rest of the kit and a small amp on another one.

Right, some advice. Just take a deep breath and relax. ADHD or otherwise, try and create the post, read it, then re-read it and decide whether you need to post it at that second. If not, re-read it again. Keep the post short and to the point. I understand there's this desire to just go up against someone and fire off a quick riposte because you feel this helps you somehow win an argument, but it's unnecessary to do so and irrespective of your condition, just sit back and wait a few minutes before hitting the submit reply button. If you do feel it necessary to edit a post, sometimes just think that submitting a single paragraph, then adding three more in the edit, muddies the waters. For the sake of clarity, just do a new post. Next, stop calling everyone jerks if they disagree with what you're posting or your opinion. Stop with the 'you're ignorant/deaf/and so on' responses if people disagree or question what you're posting. Stop with the opinionated/superior 'you don't know what you're talking about' responses when people mention gear that doesn't fit your set-up, ie Sansamps - you'll find @Tech21NYC are a pretty good at doing what they do and that you don't succeed in this business if you're not fit for purpose. Quit with the, 'I write like James Joyce' malarky too; this is a frankly awful attitudal position and is both sneering and unclever; this holier than thou attitude might be how it is in Denmark, but recognise this is a global forum. There are a ton of people here that are more than keen to help out with all manner of queries, questions, advice. Yes, me included. By distancing these people by name-calling and detrimental remarks, you distance yourself from them. -
How would you describe your tone?
NancyJohnson replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Yep. Still needed to reply. It's a curse. I'm sure Will Lee knows his poop, but almost certainly I doubt one instance of rejection has hardly made a dent in his career path, endorsements or tenure in Paul Schaeffer's Most Dangerous Band In The World (or whatever they were called). -

Why do you insist on posting something, then going in seconds later and changing/appending the entire post? I suspect it will change again while I'm typing this. My quote (as detailed above) was THE ENTIRE POST, then you go in and change things adding I'm now largely ignorant as well as suffering with hearing problems. In closing, this from your last post; it's not like you have a licence to dictate which kind of subjects people are allowed to post threads about, as long as it is relevant for the topic of the forum. I mean, what? Who is saying what you can or can't post? You're making these posts that people are struggling to understand, they're offering advice and you're responding by saying people are jerks (Geezer Butler pickup thread) and now you're effectively bellyaching because members are critiquing your meanderings on a semi-public forum. You really aren't endearing yourself to people here, especially when you start quoting James Joyce at them because that's the way you write. -

Yeah, I have. Amazing really. No sorry, I made that up. What I meant to say was, can't say I have and don't really care. -

Ooh, I clearly touched a raw nerve. But yeah, all said and done, you're spot on and I haven't got a clue about anything. How stupid of me to think otherwise considering the 30+ years of playing, live production and studio work under my belt. (Oh, and as I'm still playing nice, I'm not even going to rise to such juvenile comments about the BDDI and tone being all about the mids.) I'll reiterate what I've posted here and elsewhere many, many times; tone is subjective and a very personal thing...what you may strive to achieve in isolation or believe you're bringing to the game means nothing in a full band context. Your endless tweaks will just disappear and become lost in the mush. Sure, you'll feel good about yourself, but trust me, pretty much nobody (well, except maybe members of the bass player collective), is ever thinking the bass sounds good, period. Anyhow, moving along, as @krispn has posted twice, sound clips would make a difference; let's hear it rather than read it. -

I'll say this first off, I couldn't finish reading the original post; it's like when you're watching a film where there's a mad scientist with a blackboard covered in unfathomable calculations and he's screaming that in a few hours he'll work out how to time travel. While I'm sure the OP harbours a passion and an element of madness for his/her tone, I'll pass along something that I've learnt from my long and varied experience of bass playing in bands and studio sessions, it's that (read carefully); nobody except you cares what you sound like. Truth hurts, eh? Understand that all these boxes, these nuances, these dB tweaks that you're throwing in are going to be lost in a band context; if you want a gnarly but polite Jean-Jacques Burnel tone, just dump all the existing outboard gear and buy a Tech21 Sansamp BDDI, roll back the drive and plug it into the effects return on your amp. -
Rickenbacker aside, everything sounds pretty much the same, or more to the point, I am able to dial my desired tone from any pickup configuration.

A couple of days ago Rick Beato premiered Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone is his series of What Makes This Song... Despite my punk musical roots, Spotify tells me that this and Love Song by Sara Bereilles were my two most played songs of 2020. Go figure. This is a wonderful, wonderful song. Original: Rick Beato

It was Neephid (a member here) who renovated a Ripper. Send him a message! @neepheid.
-
If you haven't already done so, I'd shoot a message to @neepheid about the varitone; mine isn't fitted to a bass, it's on an Epiphone Phant-o-Matic guitar: You've not been specific about what the issue is, but maybe if it's a general fault with an existing one, rather than repair, just consider replacing it. They are available easily enough (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-position-VARITONE-switch-for-guitar-and-bass-Longer-Thread/254905423963?hash=item3b598c185b:g:v6AAAOSwH2VcBFiW).

Not used Rotosounds for years. I have D'Addarios on my Lull at the moment simply as they were in my box if stuff. Failing this, Elixir Nanowebs.

Opening myself up here, but with amp/speaker/cabinet advances you have a ton of options available to replace a 400w, 2x10 combo weighing 80lbs (80lbs!). Ask yourself what your budget is, how much power/headroom you need, size/weight/portability, what you want it to do (subjective, but what style if music do you play?), do you need a combo as opposed to a head/enclosure set up. ...answer these and you'll have dozens of members chipping in.
