1. Here's how day 2 started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUAkPyOrfjw and quickly got blown off track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlZcH2N6n6o
2. So, as you know by now, over 2 years in, this build has cost way more and taken way longer than I ever expected. Along the way I also bought the building next door leading to more complication and cost. All in all these extras have, inevitably, had an impact on my overall budget. As the business plan was always based on the idea that fantastic sounding big rooms are disappearing fast and, therefore, an awesome sounding drum room would be a very attractive proposition, I've long had in mind building the control room around an API Legacy+. Well, given the diminished budget, at this point, a new Legacy is sadly out of the question (never say never of course!) So when I spotted a used API 1608 advertised on GS classifieds by Renato at Starlight Studios in Italy I pm'd him pretty much immediately. Completely underestimating how far Naples was I thought I'd just do a little roadtrip down there and collect it. I now know its a 3000 mile round trip... mezed. I made a video diary of the trip for your delectation. Let me know what you think: Naples roadtrip: day 1 video by Rimskidog - Photobucket
3.
Stop it, you swine, I'd love a Reddi, but cant get close to justifying the expense!
Tell the wife it doesn't just sound good but it's big and red and beautiful too. persuade her its a work of art and put it on the mantelpiece...
4.
That's technialy re-amping, which I know alot of guys do.. it's a great way to play around with your sound.. The straight DI first is the key, alot of people miss that
Yup. though even which DI you choose also makes a huge difference. I have about a dozen DI's in my studio but I long ago narrowed my use down to either a creation audio MW1 for super clean and an A Designs Reddi for tubey warmth.
5. Cheers guys. Am mad busy trying to finish an album before penalties bite right now but as soon as I'm done I'll come back to everyone who has posted/pm'd with a choice of some dates and we'll see what suits most people. Cheers T
6. No worries guys. Any more for any more? Looking for another couple of people who want to get their hands dirty and learn some amazing tips that I've picked up over the last 28 years (eek) from some of the best in the business!
7.
I've just been speaking to two separate stores on what they would recommend, and both advised against the Zoom R24, but I sort of expected that in a way, because these are guys who use recording gear all the time, know the stuff inside out, and would almost certainly turn their nose's up at something like the Zoom R24. I emphasised the point, that I don't know that much about computer recording, and being a bit long in the tooth, I did not want to spend too much time learning new tricks. Anyway! They came up with a couple of suggestions, and the only one that really grabbed me, was: Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 FireWire Audio Interface http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/foc...nterface--58155 It's packed with quality for the price, and records 16 tracks simultaneously. But, I don't know whether it will be too difficult for me to learn how to get the best from it. What do you guys/gals think? and are there any places I could go to get hand's on tuition? I know purely from a quality point of view, it will much better than the Zoom R24, yet only costing £20 more. But at the end of the day, I feel the Zoom R24 would do what I'm looking for, just simple recordings of the band, for rough demo's to hand out, and for our own use.
That's a good option though note there are only 8 preamps on the unit so unless you had the ability to line in that only gives you 8 simulataneous ins. The motu 8pre is also a solid little unit:http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/motu-8pre-firewire-audio-interface-with-8-mic-preamps--36152
8. Could all those genuinely interested pm me their contact details. I intend to contat everyone to find out whether there are things they would definately like to cover to work them into the programme Cheers T
9. If we can get half a dozen people together I was thinking it might be quite cool to do 2 days to kick it off and I'd get a band in to record from scratch so we can cover drums, bass, guitars and vocals and play with mic and preamp choices and placement as a starter for 10?. Sound interesting? I use protools HD with lots of hardware (so you'd get hands on with the real version of la2a's, 1176s, etc etc), you'd get to hear and compare preamps ranging from API to Neve and mics from the basic shure sm57 right up to Telefunken U47, Neumann U87 and Elam 251
10. Cool. There are loads of online ones so I've been encouraged to do a series of hands on workshops at my studios. Small group format. Hands on with great gear. Maybe a hundred quid a day? I'm thinking if I keep the groups small enough we can be flexible enough to cover what people want rather than just standing up and doing a blah blah blah. Maybe get a band in and record and mix a record over a few sessions? I dunno. What would people who have expressed an interest like to cover? Urb if you are up for 'pinning' them I'm happy to do some online ones too for the benefit of the forum.
11. I'm being asked by members on another forum I post on to put on a short series of really practical workshops on recording and mixing to include mic selection and placement; recording different instruments and voices; choosing and using pres/eqs/compressors etc. Anyone here might be interested?
12.
Nice playing, did you charge for it?
Thanks man. I didnt charge 'extra'. I gave him a project price. I ended up doing the guitars and percussion too. He did give me 2% for production and a songwriting credit as I helped re-write them to better 'hit the spot'. I also arranged strings and horns.
13. Fancy seeing you here mate! I didnt even know you were a bass player! I can vouch for Sean (Sniperschool). He's a top man and straight as they come!
14. this singer/songwriters budget was decimated paying for the string and horn sections so I played bass as well as producing recording and mixing. Enjoy: www.grantfolland.com
15. Thanks man! We're now gearing up for construction to resume so I took down the partition walls in the new space today:
16. Well, as it turns out it wasn't soon at all! Sorry for tardy update, I've been busy earning a crust! Anyway, after going through a lot of brainstorming on potential designs you can see below the final concept (please note this is just my rough sketchup so while things like square rooms appear, they don't in reality). Northward are working on the final detailed plans even as we speak and I hope to get started with the next build phase within the next month or so! Let me know what you think!
17.
hi guys recently i was recording through my old 410tp, when i was asked the question, which cone is best i was confused, and he explained to me sometimes one cone ill sound better than the other? is there always a certain cone that is better for recording, or is this a bit pedantic?
It's not that there's a specific cone for recording but it's true that often one cone sounds better than any of the others. You just need to get your ear down beside each of them and have a listen. While they are certainly useful and easy to use modellers still don't sound as good as a well mic'd and DI'd bass. It's true to say that it's not worth mic'ing a bass if you don't have a decent room to do it in as the bass modes in, for example, a domestic sized room will often overhwelm what you are trying to do. It's still true however that a phase matched DI and well mic'd bass in a good sounding room will get you a few extra % which, in my world, is certainly worth it. YMMV of course.
18. for live or recording? In essence the mic doesnt care how big your voice as long as it is fed enough gain from the preamp. If you want to upgrade the mic maybe look at a Telefunken M80 but my guess is you need to look at your preamp first.
I do lead vox/guitar in a three-piece, but I do not have a 'big boomy' voice. I'm using a SM58 at the mo' does anyone have any suggestions for a more suitable mic?? Thanks y'all.
19. Two plans currently in the running. the winner coming soon!
20.
Crikey! You looking to measure up to the likes of Bridge Studios now then Nice one mate, enjoy it!
Slowly slowly catchy monkey matey! ;-)
21. A little update: the identical building next door (joined by a party wall) came up for sale a few weeks ago. After a lot of soul searching I decided to buy it. I made an offer only to find... doh! They already had an offer from another buyer. In the circumstances I had to pay a little more than I'd have liked (and probably more than if I'd been decisive when it first went up for sale) but yesterday they formally accepted my offer. Woohoo! Circle Studios just became 3600 sq ft!
22. are you on pc or mac?
23. In Circle Studios this week? Multi-platinum best selling producer Michael Wagener (Ozzy Osbourne: No More Tears/Ozzmosis/Live n Loud, Metallica: Master of Puppets, Queen, Motley Crue, The Rasmus, Kings X, Skid Row, Randy Rhoades, WASP etc etc etc!)
24.
Fletcher! Whadda legend!
He is certainly that!
25.
Forgive my ignorance but who is he?
He's called Fletcher. Has records on his discography ranging from Aerosmith to Bootsy Collins.
