You can laugh mate but I've already considered cutting the top off the Squier, chambering it out and then putting a fancy quilted maple cap on it! I've used DR's for nearly 10 years now.... I've stopped buying them, not because of cost (although that's got out of hand lately) but because they don't shrink wrap the boxes any more.... every set of DR's i've purchased in the last year has been dead out of the packet.... Until they start shrink wrapping them again i'm not wasting my money on dead strings !! I've asked String Busters and Strings Direct to give DR this feedback, not holding my breath though Mark

Sell the TF...... and buy this to complete your collection http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-PRECISION-Fre...A1%7C240%3A1318 -

I used a Mark Bass Rig for a while.... The set up was Loud as hell..... and It did cut through really well, but it was loud in a way that Hitting a dustbin lid is loud ! There was very little body to the note (IMHO) I loved the SA450, but the cabs left something to be desired in my experience. I think with Bass..... unfortunately to get the best in tone (live) you need big heavey cabinets with big heavey magnets !! The laws of Physics can be stretched but not broken !!

You could easily throw £300 at upgrading pickups bridge & tuners..... but for £300 you could get a good 2nd hand Mex Fender, that may not be what you want to do though, is the idea of "personalising" the bass more important to you than ending up with a playable, good sounding instrument ? If so a custom paint job could be the way forward.... http://www.simscustom.com/ they do some amazing work !! Enjoy
It's what Michael wants of course Mark and I know that. I suppose I have a bit of a 'mojo' bee under my bonnet at times I not only think the TF sounds better as a P but the added versatility of the J pup is immense to my ears. The whole lived in, worn in wood thing? It's only 'common 'a' garden wood' that's a few years old. I'm not averse to a bit of genuine ageing and the odd knock breeding familiarity and comfort like an old shoe but don't get me going on relic'ing False aging is just false to me, if I owned a relic'd bass I'd feel like they saw me coming and that I bought something that was a pure fashion statement, like a faded and torn pair of 'new' jeans. But, different we all are.
ha ha..... we'd better not do this one down the pub then..... you're talking to someone who owned a pukka custom shop Jaco Bass of Doom !! LOL Aye..... agree to my lugs the PJ tone from the TF is the nuts !! -
For what it's worth, in my opinion of course there's maybe some rose tinted specs stuff maybe entering into the discussion here. I know that a lot of you will disagree though But then again I don't fall for the 'old Fender trap'. I think the TF really does sound better and give it a few years and it'll look the 'part' and everyone on basschat will say 'keep it' how could you possibly sell it etc.
You've got a point Peter and I agree with your observations of the sound (ofcourse given the limitations of the recording / playback) however it's difficult to get past the 38 years of MoJo and the fact that the 2 bits of wood that fundamentally make up the 71 P Bass have "Lived" together for so long..... Romance, MoJo, Snake oil ? yeah all of those things but that's a little bit of what makes the magic...... I think in the final analysis Michael will want to pick up the 71 P more often than the TF and that really should make the decision easy for him ! Mark -
Hi Guys, after much hassle / fun / frustration / money I think I've finally found a rig I can settle with and enjoy.... Aguilar DB750 / SWR Goliath III / SWR SOB I've managed to pick up a pair of virtually unused Pre Fender SWR cabs (from different owners) to compliment the DB750. To my ears the Aguilar cabs I was using previously didn't compliment the Thick, Full sound of the DB750. As a package I much prefer the "leaner" "Edgier" sound of the SWR boxes. The Little SOB has it's detractors, I've heard a few people say that it gets lost under the Goliath III and I have to admit that a 15 that doesn't go as low as a 410 seems a little pointless in some respects. However A/B'd with just the Goliath and then with the SOB as well I do prefer what the 15 adds, it just warms it up a touch and "strengthens" the low end rather than extending it.... The simplicity of the DB750 is a real joy, it's pure "Heft & Grunt" is difficult to compare to anything else i've owned... I now realise why I sold the last one, I was using it with a DB410 and it's almost too much of a good thing ! Hearing the 750 through WOT's Bergs made me realise what I was missing in my Bass sound..... the "sizzle" The SWR's do that perfectly and seem (to my ears) to have a very balanced sound across the frequency spectrum when driven by the DB750. In my opinion no other bass head does what the DB750 does in terms of delivering thick defined clean tone, but I think the AG500 suits the Aguilar cabs better (to my ears) maybe some of the momentum to redesign the pre-amp section of the DB750 was driven by making it a better partner for their cabs ? (As well as saving some dosh) Pics as Requested...... Last Gig I did with the Reet Hot Chili Peppers Using Aguilar DB750 / GS112/GS112NT/GS115 How to describe....... The Delicate Sound of Thunder !! Close up of the Rig.... New Rig...... ATB Mark
Pleasure Mark and as always a font of solid knowledge on all things bass, great just shooting the breeze and hearing you play. I have to confess I'm still reeling a bit from how good this 'Vintage Vibe' is! It may well get an airing on BH Monday... it'll be interesting to see various other Muso's faces when I turn up with a Squier rather than a Warwick or Bolin The one down side is that it makes that Sadowsky or Lakland that little bit harder to justify to SWMBO.
