1.
Now I have my Overwater to complement the Harlot I find myself having to tweek to get it to sit well in the mix - loadsa extra mids basically. I miss the filter pre and thought about modding the Overwater (can't really afford to) but on looking into the control cavity it seems almost sacrilegious to interfere in there
No.... No..... don't kill the nice overwater !!! I used to have a Progress III DLX 5 loved it but...... don't get on with 5's would eventually like to get a Progress 4 made
2.
Try one Marcus, read the hype, its justified. Takes a little aquaintance but once bitten, crafting tone is always better than tweeking it. All imo of course.
te he..... knew that's get a rise..... I've had a number of series Alembics so understand what you're saying...... with the exception of Stingray type basses I hardly ever boost bass for live use, so I accept that filter based pre-amps have something to add... May consider an experiment with my Longhorn Jazz which currently has an East J Retro in it Anyway........ where's Bill & Alex to tell me to leave my cabs alone
3.
Yep, 3 x GS112's'd be 2.7 Ohms, 900 watts and they'd be resaleable, stackable and still a 1 handed carry (each). Can you borrow one and give it a try? I'm a bit too far away methinks. Oh and they'd definately 'work' too. In fact I always think 2 x GS112's are more than the sum, wonder what 3'd be like
All fair comment....... I could still use 3 GS112's and a GS115 !! In all probability a pair of GS112's will do any gig i'm likely to get into in the near future.... but sometimes you wonder about upgraded components delivering more.... else why would someone put Nordstrands into a USA Jazz..... or replace perfectly good Aguilar circuits with funny filter things Cheers Guys
4. Hi Guys, I'm very happy with my current Rig...... Agular DB750 & GS112 & GS112NT However....... i'm thinking I could upgrade the Drivers in my cabs to a higher power handling / better quality 4ohm units and achieve full power from my DB750 which is happy to deliver nearly a 1000W at 2ohms I've read enough on here to know it's not all about watts. I know for more volume i'd be way better off adding more cabs..... infact I have a GS115 which I can pair with the 2x 112's for a monster rig. I guess my thinking is.... Get a GS410 to run with the GS115 for big gigs (If they happen again) and have the "supercharged" 112's for more compact gigs.... Am I being Daft ? Should I leave well alone ? The cabs appear to have a pretty low sensitivity..... As I have lots of power available from the BD750 I feel as though this might be good in the respect of the fact that I can turn up the wick and get the amp out of first gear... Am I thinking correctly here ? Or is the popular pairing of the DB750 with say a super efficient Bergantino cab more of the way forward ? I'm sure Aguilar spent a lot of time working out the best driver for the GS/DB112 - but there must have been an "economy factor" engineered in to achieve such a competitive price point...... would a more expensive driver that was well matched to the type of cabinet / internal vol etc yield an improvement or are there just physical limits to how much power and clean vol you can achieve from a small enclosure like the GS112 Is there a High power 12' Driver out there that's suitable to the box - if so what is it ? Lot's of questions I know..... but I know we have some great experts in this field on Basschat....... Aguilar GS 112 Spec One 12" cast frame woofer, 56 oz. magnet Power handling: 300 watts Impedance: 8 ohms Phenolic tweeter with integral phase plug Custom crossover with variable tweeter control One Neutrik Speakon and two 1/4" inputs Frequency response: 42 Hz to 16 kHz Sensitivity: 95 DB 1W 1M Heavy-duty spring loaded handle Interlocking corners Dimensions: 14"H x 19"W x 18"D 7-ply, void free Philippine mahogany Weight: 42 lbs. Thanks Guys ATB Mark
5. Chris does it again !!!! Boy this guy knows how it should be done........ we exchanged Sadowsky Basses today and everyone's a winner !!! Top blole this Chrisdabass, the only question is what will we trade next...... got my eye on his NYC like but he's not havin any of it !!! ATB Mark
6. Nice....... although i'm a 4 string kinda guy, i'm loving this !!
7.
Y'know, I took it along to WH's rehearsal last night, and it sounded absolutely flippin' lovely. And you know what? He used my P (with flats!) for a large chunk of the evening. Oh my... what a tone! I need a gig.
I bet his fingers are killin him this morning
8.
I put a Badass 3 on my USA Jazz and it made no difference to the sustain or tone. This may be because my Jazz is through-strung so has lots of sustain anyway. I also got a lower action with the standard Fender bridge.
that generation of jazz bass has a way better bridge that the bent tin jobbies, so maybe the difference was lessnoticable. . . . . . a shim in the neck pocket will help you achieve a lower action with the bad ass ATB Mark
9.
"almost" never.... I always leave myself a get-out
a career in politics becons
10.
It's just a pointless discussion. *Everything* makes a difference to the tone - you almost never have the luxury of doing an A-B (never mind C,D,E....) comparison between two basses with different wood but everything else the same. Same old story - try it. Did you like it? Good
ive done just that on many an occasion at overwater. . . . . the differences even a face wood can make is not subtle.
11. suits you sir
12.
It's a minor thing I suppose but really a big Co. like Line 6 should check their facts... I have a Variax 700 bass which has been sidelined for so long that I'd forgotten what all of the sounds are modelled on so I decided to check their on-line manual. As I browsed through I came to the 'Modern' setting, one of which is the Warwick Thumb; dear me... why then have a picture of a Warwick Corvette? As I say not the end of the world and I'm not losing sleep over it but someone, somewhere wants their backside kicking. Anybody else ever found a manufacturers c*ck up?
All you Warwicks look the same to me !!
13. Not a manufacturer....... but the Heynes manual for the old Mini has a corker in it... Procedure for removing the petrol tank... Disconnect battery Open boot lid The Battery is in the boot !!!!
14. Thanks guys...... this thread is giving me some great ideas to bring to the table ! Some new stuff that i've not heard befor too...... thanks Agroupuk, i'll dig them out ATB Mark
15. I've played a few and been impressed.... I've heard 2 live and been very impressed....... no real desire to own one though
16. Great stuff Guys..... thanks for this Keep the ideas coming...... Thanks Mark
17. ....... and the 2009 Award for Foolish Optimism goes to....
18. Thanks guys...... great stuff Keep the suggestions coming ATB Mark
19. Hi Guys, i've been talked into doing a new project...... the group of lads are firmly against the classic rock stuff and the following bands have been proposed Killers Kings of Leon Jet Kaiser Chiefs Franz Ferdinand Stereophonics Foo Fighters I have to admin I don't really know the back catalogue of these bands too well...... I'm looking for recommendations of songs from these bands where the bass is interesting / prominent / integral to the song I'm not really looking to just sit back and play ploddy 8th notes all night with a pick !! I'm sure I won't be able to avoid playing whatever hits these guys have had, but could use some insight into their other songs too, I need to go along to our first get together with some ideas of what I want to play..... Ofcourse i'm going to listen to their stuff myself but thought it might be an idea to get a quick roll call from my bass playing peers Thanks Guys ATB Mark
20. Hey thanks Nick...... that's a fantastic compliment mate..... I guess my list starts with these guys....... Nick (Doctor of the Bass) one of the very first guys to get the Mark King stuff down pat, and well befor Stuart Claytons books made it easy for anyone to do it. Nick also made the jump from P/T hobbyist to full time working pro giving up a great career to do it.... Balls mate, living the dream. RESPECT BOSSHOG Don't think i've ever seen such effortless tasty licks, I think one of those guys who's just a natural born bass player, such control in his playing. He's always got the very best gear and when you hear him play you think..... that Bass / Amp sounds fab, then you have a go yourself and it sounds FCUK ALL like Mick makes it sound..... Frustrating and motivational all at the same time. Run for Cover Because of this bloke I really have no desire to see Marcus Miller !! I'm sure i'd be underwhelmed if I did. Yeah he's got all of Millers licks and tone off to a T but he's also a lesson to all of us in dedication to the instrument. Knowledge of theory and how to apply it in a musical context is awe inspiring, never really seen anyone get around a fretboard like Dave Funky Hobbit You'll never meet a guy more passionate about the instrument and a really unselfish musician. Funk is in his blood for sure, but also happy to play Rock standards and take the supportive role...... Ever seen anyone play "Smoke on the Water" with an Alembic S2. Mark was the first bloke I ever saw who could play the Level 42 stuff convincingly. A really grounded lad who works hard to develop his understanding of the instrument. KevBucket Great player for sure...... ability to improv around a chord structure as good as anyone i've seen, lots can do that I guess, but THE MOST ENTERTAINING Player i've ever seen !! It's been a pleasure to Dep for you these last few months. The Bass Doc If it's a tight player you want to see with the most gorgeous old school Fender tone then Howard's the man to see, His Hero is Duck Dunn and his band the Stax Bro's do all the Blues Bros / Committments type of material.... I think of all the genre's out there this is the stuff i'd like to do the most. He also puts a mean Bass together too ! The Beeps Alex is a top bloke, again has that effortless qualitty to his playing, makes it look too easy when it really isn't !! Been a pro for years and it shows, there's nothing this lad can't play, also knows his way around musical production. I could go on but my Tea is ready........
21.
Cool mine may be then cos when i called fender they said one guy built it? any ways they are class, but to be honest this is the first one i have seen and played in the flesh.
Even the Masterbuilt instruments are not built by one person, the build is "overseen" by one person.... My Mark Kendrick 66 Jazz Masterbuild (100 Ltd Ed) would have been built by a team and assembled by Mark. I know we all like the romance of it all... but how long do you think it would take one bloke to build a 100 Basses by hand !!!
22. I have a pair of 80's........ class !! Plug them into my Korg Pandora for private practice
23.
I agree 6 necked guitars are absolutely STUPID... 5 necks, now that's a different matter!
can you believe it.......... something with more neck that John you'd certainly have concerns about the weight of that fellow......
24.
Agreed!! complete bargain. One of THE best jazzes around.
Don't remind me...... only my determination to get another DB750 stood in the way of me owning this again !!
