Good Idea! Its a different beast to your 1970 Custom Shop. Its lighter but with a much darker tone and is particularly nice when passive. PS the NYC is on its way also, I am a born again Nordstrand enthusiast at the moment :-) EDIT: On a serious note I wouldnt change anything on your Fender. As its one of a 100 its collectability in the future would rely on it being stock with no broken solder joints I reckon. If you leave it as it is it will be worth a few bob in a few years!
Lets organise a bash and you can try it out
I'd be embarrased if we had a bash ! I've only got one Fender bass and a baby amp to bring along ! I'd feel such a fraud

I used a DB728 & 680 with a pair of GS410's as my main Rig for about 4 months...... See Avatar) for sure the best bass tone on the planet ! But the Weight !?! That 728 made an Ampeg SVT seem like a lightweight solution !! Mine Went to a Guy in Italy for a stupidly low price, wished I'd hung on to it Mark

I can see it's not a Fender !! Does it have balls ? (see what I did there Bolin Balls)

Easy..... I'd have Marcus Millers 77 Jazz bass ! The tone (I know 80% at least is in his hands) that defined some great Albums from Luther, Sanborn and a whole load more..... I fell in love with Bass listening to Marcus, without even realising til years later it was him !!
... and about time to! Rass-n-fassin Southeners So when is the Geordie Bass Bash going to happen then? We could all meet up at Haltwhistle and sell raffle tickets to win DW's Peugeot 'wardrobe/cupboard' that is cluttering up his workshop
About time we had another one !!

If you can find one the Aguilar DB680 728 pre / power offers 400W All Valve tone and will seriously knock down walls, I used this set up with a pair of Aguilar GS410's - see avatar One Awesome set up - I believe Boss Hogg had the same set up prior to his DB750 era Mark

I used the Phil Jones rig last night at my rehearsal, really impressed with the overall tone. In the context of a small rehearsal room in close proximity to a loud drummer and a marshall TSL 2x12 combo and all sorts of noise bleeding into the vocal mic's I was struggling a bit for volume, it's not the rig to punch a hole through a busy mix. Tonally loads of bottom end.... I have no idea how it goes so low and moves as much air for 8 x 5' speakers, what was lacking was some mid bite, maybe it's not in the amp to deliver it, maybe it's to do with the room acoustics / mix Overall though...... really happy with the amp Mark

I've not been able to put my bass down over the weekend...... My 1970 Custom Shop Jazz sounds unbelievable ! I'm pretty sure i'll not want for volume I'll report in here tonight after my rehearsal Mark

Guys, I just got a Phil Jones Suitcase & Extension cab today ! In the last couple of years i've owned the following rigs SWR SM900 Goliath III & Son of Bertha Eden WT800 2 x 410XLT's EBS TD650 2 x Neo 212's Ampeg SVT Classic & 8 x10 Ashdown Evo 900 ABM 410 ABM 15 Aguilar DB680 & 728 2 x GS410's Mark Bass SA450 std 410 & 15 I have to say I don't impress easily with bass amplification and as i'm no longer doing any "big gigs" I was looking for something compact but with good fidelity. This Phil jones stuff is fab !! Loads of low end extension, good weight to the note but so tight and articulate. Mids are so open and transparent top end sizzles like miller's tone ! and without a horn !! There is so much presence to the bass it feels like you could reach out and touch the note ! Slap sounds amazing, those little 5' drivers are so fast with real thump and attack... It's also got loads more volume than you'd ever expect from something this size, it's genuinely gigable ! Very Very impressive indeed - I think this will be the last rig I ever need or buy. got a rehearsal with it on Monday with a RHCP Tribute (i'm just filling in for their regular bass player) ...... i'll let you know how it does in the real world Cheers Mark

Our band are selling a 2.2k RCF rigg pair of 325 tops and the matching 800 watt (each) bins cost us about £2,500 a year ago..... but they have dropped in price since then which I guess is good for you !! l done about 25 pub gigs and always used with a TC electronics compressor http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~R...5-A~ID~5296.asp http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~R...5-A~ID~5297.asp Cheers Mark
Howard is still trading! ^
Yep.... Even when he had the shop his main workshop was at home. Give him a buzz i'm sure he'll take on your fret dress for you Mark -
Bass Drivers and Guitar Drivers are constructed differently due to the nature of their respective jobs ! Usually the voice coils and cone materials are much more robust Guitar Cabs are usually built handle no more than 100W where as bass cabs can often handle many hundreds of watts It's quite likely you'll blow the guitar cab's drivers if you play at any kind of volume Mark

Howards Shop has been a meeting/focal point for bass players in the North East for years. Always up for a deal and loved working on Fenders, he's done work for me in the past and charged only for the parts, saying it was a pleasure to just work on the instruments....... ..... Top bloke ! There were very few visits I ever made to Newcastle without dropping in to Howie's Mark -
