Finishing a 70's maple jazz neck replica....help & advice please :)
Raslee replied to Raslee's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for the great advice and tips guys. I've found someone who is kindly going to do the work for me - B/C is such a wonderful place -
Since sadly having to part ways with my real 74 jazz I've decided to do a replica build (ish) of it. I have a body and electrics, not exactly a replica of the old body but an aged decent body i've had for a while from MJT. I want to recreate something similar with a neck I have as my old 74. I have all the parts - managed to get a decent B-stock All Parts Japan maple neck with blocks and some 70's replica tuners, and also a period correct decal. The new neck is totally unfinished and i need to know where to start; i have some Manchester guitars tint spray and that's about it. My previous 74 neck had, i presume, a varnish finish too..is there a recommendation for a suitable finishing varnish, or lacquer ?, available from B&Q that would go over the tint? And how is best to apply? I may try and 'dirt' the neck up a little to in order to make it look a little aged...again any advice on dirt . Also any advice on how to age chrome parts a little - mainly the tuners? Sorry for the lots of Q's but i'm clueless at this sort of thing, mostly a pen pusher by day .....if anyone knows where i can send all the parts and get them to do it then great ....or alternatively with a little help here i could give it a go myself . I did Google instructions but couldn't find any definitive guides, especially for a 70's maple neck - although admittedly it was a quick Google having been snowed under with work of late. As always any advice or guidance is vastly appreciated (I can offer psychiatric/social work advice in return...but no crisis please - i have enough of that in the day job! ) For reference this was my original 74 neck:
Funnily, I replied to a post asking about fretless Precision necks - I'll give you the same answer. Get in touch with ShukerGuitars.co.uk. Stunning workmanship and will do you proud.
Cheers Dood, I'm aiming to do a replica of my 74 bass that i sadly have to sell - I'll give them an email tomorrow.

Wow, never predicted this would ever happen but my lovely 1974 Fender Jazz is up for grabs. Sadly life's unexpected situations happen and I need to recoup some cash from building works and also a recent car purchase. So with a very heavy heart my 1974 all original, apart from the wires on the pickups, a screw in the strap holder, and the middle screw in the bridge - previous snapped when taking it off to photo yesterday. Hands down this is the best bass i've played and heard - no other jazz soundwise has come close but it's all i have to sell. Also another bass (in my sig) that shall not be mentioned will be going too. The bad bits for complete honesty, a screw went through the 19th fret making a very small hole indentation to the fretboard - doesn't effect playability though - seen in the myriad of pictures to follow. Also there is a hairline crack in first pearloid marker on the first fret - still smooth though, again not an issue - quite common on a bass of this age. Under the scratch plate there is a strange 3-4cm line dint, was like this when i got it - see pics. Usual knocks, mojo and small dings for a 42 year old bass but again nothing tragic - this bass is cool as ** Forgot to mention, as seen in the pictures it has a Hipshot detuner on at present, i will take this off and return the original tuner or i can leave the detuner on for an extra £20 - along with the original tuner. *** Also i have the original ashtray covers Also my surname is 'Stone', my 6yr old daughter used to call this 'The Family Stone bass'...so if you're looking for a bass for metal...this is not the bass your looking for ...however if you love all things with a groove then buy it before i see sense and kick myself hard. So without further ado check the link to the 81 pictures of all the bass and bits - i stripped it this morning for authenticity pictures and now its all back together as sweetly as before. Low action and a nice 9.81lbs / 4.4 Kgs.....not a heavy beast by any means but also not too light to suck the tone out. The 81 Pictures: https://www.icloud.c...#B0O5BydzFW49mM: If you need anything more specific then do let me know, but I'm reluctant to strip it again. Oldie pictures: When i got this bass in part cash/trade the seller was looking for £2K. I will be looking for just £1750 or better still a part trade with a cheaper 4 string only bass, ideally a USA jazz or other Jazz, possibly a Precision ideally with a Jazz width neck i.e Duck Dunn or Fender Special, Limelight etc, may consider a 3EQ Musicman Stingray, G&L's etc and cash my way (at least £900). Collection from Plymouth or buyer can arrange courier. I do not have a hard case, rather I have one of those soft cases...not a gig bag but soft case - it will packed superwell by my wife, who is legendary (see my feedback) - have posted many basses around the world without issues too. Right, must go and nurse my anxiety attacks

Hello all, Any tips on who would build a 70's Jazz replica neck ? specifically looking for an early 70's maple with blocks, aged, and yes a 'F' logo 'U' type shape - the same that I already have on my 74. Was thinking MJT in the USA but wondered if there are any people in the UK who do this sort of thing? Thanks in advance for replies.

SOLD Selling this lovely cab as i barely use it since getting my Markbass combo in which i use my 2x10" as the extension cab. Indonesian made (totally as good as the Italian ones IMO ). 400W @ 8ohms & tweeter, bit of the normal age bobbling on the covering but nothing tragic, sounds great and no issues. Has a Roqsolid cover with a large Velcro close pocket (this cost me £50). All in all a great cab and a very light one hand carry. Specs http://www.markbass....etail.php?id=97 £220 Collected from Plymouth or + £20 P&P (if courier costs more I'll cover it, if less then I'll refund).
Lovely bass ,and i have been trying very hard to resist...hmm
I'm surprised it's still here mate to be honest.....i do love it but it's not getting a look in since the Ricky landed, even though the Lakland is the better player. It's too nice to sit in a case. I'm sure if someone played it they'd take it easily, it's a top quality build, sound and look.
How do. I thought these were heavy basses - is the 8.3lbs weight what you recorded? Anyway, have a BUMP!
Nope this bass is a lovely and accurate 8.3lbs on digital scales. Although it is a wonderful heavy sound but lightweight on the feel
