I've owned a couple of fretless basses - Its all music they're just different. I tend to run a mile from bohemian types playing a battered Jazz fretless

If a P Bass doesn't work for me, its generally me who's at fault and I'm tired.

I was hoping that there are some demo videos where the bass player plays with a plectrum and doesn't just play four bars of dunk, dunk, dunk before defining a new epoch in bass playing with his or her fingerstyle / slap chops. I recently bought a 6, initially this was for my own interests in playing different styles - I should have done this years ago. After finding the B string extremely suitable for the repetoire of the band, more recently I bought a 2nd hand 5 - (one of the many for sale on here) for gigging; another and uncharacteristic smart move. A few months and many band rehearsals later, I look at my four strings and in many ways feel that I've moved on from them.

Other than his days with Paul Young and Jools - I've never given PP a second thought*, by his own admission his sig line on "wherever I lay my hat" was copped from listening to Jaco - perhaps that's the way it should be, play your part and remain annonymous while the music speaks for you *That said, he's a top session player and I'm contempating a few days off work during Easter. For me the 'thing' with many of these regularly employed top names is the music and the musicians that they share the session / stage with.. If the material is good and the vibe is good, great things can happen. There a lot of 'mojo' in some of these sessions that often isn't communicated when you come to try learning the part for your next gig. A decent P bass is a decent P bass - everyone should either own one, or have dismissed one at some point in their life.

Some great points here, we recently tried to negotiate with the horn section from a local blues band for a couple of gigs, they said no as they, didn't want to learn learn new songs.

I like using phrases in an unfamiliar context, for no other reason than I find it funny, usually they're robbed from a comedy that I've heard.. However, I struggle with people who finish sentences off with a rising cadence in their voice that finishes with a non existent question.

[/quote] I feel the same way, I watched a band the other night at a small club, when the bass was heard in isolation through the PA the sound was a not very pleasant woolly thud - when played ensemble it pulled the band together beautifully.

We always rehearse with the full set up - but hired PA comes with the room and as the vocalists meet up on a separate night to work out harmonies and share a glass of wine, the time is spent playing as a band. As regards bass gear the place we use has many reasonable options - I tend to take my own rig just so I stay in touch with its nuances. I don't get too worried about 'my sound' and have expeimented with different cab combinations, leading to me swapping a 1x15 for 2x12

Around 18 months ago, I returned to playing fingerstyle after years of playing with a plectrum. For the finger tips of my plucking hand, it was a painful experience, but it took longer for the tendons in my fingers to become robust enough to gig. It took 6 months of regular playing before I was happy enough, not to have a plectrum handy - I practice for around 2 hours most days.
