1. For me playing live with a band, no compression. I don't want to cut through a mix either, I want to sit in the mix providing 'aural sex' into the music.
2. Sorry I don't know the song, but there's nothing wrong with playing with a pick. You may find that a softer 0.96mm pick helps you with playing certain parts, but I wouldn't bother playing fingerstyle if you normally play with a pick.
3.
I think that I'd like to see my history written in my own instrument..
I have a Precision bought from new twenty years ago; that line sums up. my ownership.
4. My tips for free tone.

Practice without an amp, if you can hear the notes clearly unplugged, you will hear them through an amp.
Practice a lot.
5. Ace of Spades - Motorhead
6. I have a lot respect for PM, a general point about him is that apart from being a good musician, he spent many years learning his trade and developing his playing skills before walking into a recording studio. When he did record, he and the Beatles were ready to do it. Much of his playing would have been done with a plactrum too, trying this, may unlock some of his lines.
7. Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart
8. Great - thanks for sharing.
9.
New rig. Not road tested yet, but sounds awesome at home so far!
I like this a lot.
10. Good news that its reserved, hope you sell.
11. For me, its not good songs or bad songs, its more 'overdone songs' - 50 odd years of electrified pop music to draw from, much of which people have danced excitedly to, I'm amazed that many set lists distill down to such a narrow band of songs; with the same material cropping up in set lists across the land. If you set list isn't to your liking do something about it.
12. Right Now - The Gasman - track is Cubicle
13. I find this generates a "sweat" particularly from the interlude 02:10 onwards
14. Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
15.
Just thought of another too, although as I’ve never tried it I can’t say just how difficult it is – Boogie Nights (Heatwave) has been on our suggestions list for a while but I really don’t fancy that intro! Is it as hard as I think it is?
No - I've not played it with a band, but as I recall its a piece of cake..
16. A while back, I found an audio clip on Youtube of FZ backstage talking with his crew, he'd recently changed pickups in his guitar. I mention this as their was a warmth and tangilbe 'excitement' in his voice (he didn't know that the mic was on) which is missing from just about every other piece I've heard - I'll try looking again for it.
17.
But..the point is that too few bands give their set list and continuity and flow much thought at all, IMO
I can't speak for other bands, but this is how I construct a set.
18.
Yes! Side 2 (in old money) is among his finest 17 minutes or so IMO. I just don't "get" No Not Now :-/
That's ok, I view side one as the antipasti for side two - but the tracks Drowning Witch / Envelopes - are very very fine indeed IMO. Listen to the whole thing regularly tho..
19. Ship arriving too late to save a drowing Witch - Frank Zappa
20.
Holy crap, I'd forgotten about some of these horrors! Every morning I get down on my knees and thank God I'm not in a cover band. At the moment.
Its all music. I can remember the unbridled joy of playing heavily syncopated runs into an odd meter of (usually 5/4 it was the 90's) for whole rehearsals...
21. To be honest, there are enough technically minded members here to put this together - assumptions can be cretinous though.
22.
do you have video footage ?
Sadly, I don't. I actually quite like the song, but I managed to convince them that there's less covered, equally hip swinging, audience friendly music around...
23. When I first joined my current combo, Brown Eyed Girl was a staple, the vocals / guitarist had even developed a little hip swinging dance to accentuate the happy go lucky feel of the song. We no longer play it and to this day, if i see him perform that 'dance' while we're playing a song, its usually the last time it gets included in the set. He's far better if he concentrates.
24.
Which has to be the smallest valve amp I`ve ever seen Dave, plus it sounds great, was knocked out by its sound at the SE Bass Bash.
Perhaps I should try another one sometime - the one I owned was a big disappointment.
25. I think you'd have to manage your expectations of small, as you say, transformers and valves have their own physical needs.
