I have been looking at Fodera and Pedulla basses and talking myself out of buying one, (it helps that I'm not a fan of wood finishes on basses). At the other end of the scale I tried a Squire Jazz V last year this bass was superb, (can't play five strings though)

The Fender label or 'other' label isn't the issue for me. If I factor in a host of other variables such as, pick up choice, strings, pick or fingers, valves or SS, EQ settings, speaker cabs there is a very real chance that I'll disappear up my own 'starfish' and forget that this is all about playing music.

In answer to the thread title, no it wouldn't - unless the band had run its course. Sounds very much like a piano player who has moved over to keyboards. I have experience of this, instead of the odd quip, have a face to face conversation, between you and him - go for a curry and discuss it. Alternatively When I first joined the band there was one song that he sewn the bass part up so tight that I just stopped playing and went for a drink. As new material came in, I found my way through this was to let him play him bass lines as this allowed me to explore some of the more rarefied areas of the fret board, when this raised a few eyebrows I stopped and pointed directly at the keyboard player and said he's playing the ****ing bass line that I should play. Made my point and things improved.

I traded an Ibanez MC888 (which was comical to play) I'd like to see it again just to see if it was really a bad as my memory tells me.

Bought a Jazz Bass loom from John, arrived within 24hrs of initial enquiry, wiring diagram and tools included - Installed easily, I can't recommend his work and operation highly enough.

Years ago there was a feature on Nathan East in the US Guitar Player Magazine - he recounted the story, that when he started out as a session musician, he found it necessary to call the telephone company to make sure that there wasn't a problem with his line, he received so few calls.

Yep, you can play fretless in any genre, (*thinks* personally I switch off when I hear one of those guys who have just discovered Jaco, or have attached a Chorus pedal to it, other than this), I say go for it.

When playing I'm usually more concerned with my band playing the material correctly and not pratting about between numbers; the general ambition is that people will dance and enjoy their evening, but we get asked to play wedding gigs, rather than us seek them out. so hopefully they know what they're about to receive. I'm well aware of musical factions, but it all comes back to playing music to the best of your ability. A few years ago, one of my bands attended the local 'muso venue' on the open mic night, we played Zappa's Zoot Allures, a structured piece, with no 'jamming' or noodling solo BS, this killed the 'muso' conversation and 'attitude' that night, oh, how we laughed.

[/quote] The vocals are the main thrust of our band, we have four vocalists who can take a lead vocal and this also provides strong combinations of backing vocals. If one can't sing something we try it amongst the others or a male and female vocal doubled, but if its really not working then we move on. Given their own choice of material, I know from bitter experience that they'd occupy there own comfort zone, so it works best if they're given a little (ahem) 'direction' - the thing is, for all of the 'cussing and fussing they really do like to bask in the post gig feed back, of 'you don't hear such and such live' or 'so much better than the typical bands that we see here" Weird thing is that we never choose material based upon tasty bass lines.

I'd agree in part, the material has to suit the vocalist(s) and to this end we work out if a given song indeed be sung, but we don't generally have issues of 'I don't really like it, therefore I'm not going to try' or 'its beneath my musical intellect'

How do we agree on new songs? We don't. There's always a compromise from someone.
