I am happy being 'dumb' and 'uninformed' about lots of subjects. Otherwise people ask questions about those subjects and expect answers.

Don't even get me started about Chuck.....
The Ayes certainly shouted louder, does that count?
Oh good.....i can't remember if i was an Aye or a No but well done the Aye's.....i think

I prefer Jaco personally.

Without reading all the posts have we reached a conclusion yet? Do the Aye's or the No's have it?

Sid Vicious - undervalued bass innovator?

He added a certain "I don't know what" imo. -
I think we are all groundbreaking bassists. One Love.

It could be that JP becomes like Lord Voldemort.....he that shouldn't be mentioned. Clearly it's the fault of the OP for having an opinion 😡 😉
One of the things I like about BC is the way people can express their beliefs and have an intelligent discussion without resorting to personal attacks. I rather feel that this thread, as it has grown, shows us at less than our best.
Agreed.
If that is the case then perhaps he should have said he finds it difficult to listen to Jaco's music. He could then have appealed to the forum to help him to see where Jaco's talents lie. To use the provocative terms that he did were obviously not helpful.
Perhaps not everyone is able to put to paper exactly what they want to express. Should we criticise for that? I prefer to read (between the lines if i need too), digest the gist of things before damning a post.
Ok, I'm happy to argue this out. If you post a deliberately troll-ishly worded post (labeling someone universally renowned for being one of the most important musicians of the last century as "not all that") and then saying he sounds like someone noodling in a guitar shop, don't be surprised if you get called ignorant. It's the same as walking into the Tate and telling everyone about how you think Picasso just looks like a bunch of random crap done by a 2 year old. Or going into a theatre and telling everyone about how Shakespeare is just a load of weird words. It comes across as deeply naive and provocative. That's how you normally choose to start a 'mature discussion', is it? You are entitled to your opinion, but it just comes across as trolling. For the record I am not a big Jaco fan either, but it doesn't take too many brain cells to figure out that there was a lot of talent and ability there.
Troll-ish posts are subjective to the reader i find. Sure naivety (or having less experience of a subject) is likely to be provocative to some but surely the OP is seeking to gain insight?
Just for ballance I do like a bit of parpy fretless... I'm often inclined to do some myself I'll have to have a better listen tonight, there were just to many notes in the bits I heard yesterday, not enough structure for my taste... I couldn't really pick out a melody or groove. Guess I'm just conditioned to cycles of riffs etc... I am a man of simple tastes
You need to listen to Kuru Rob

Gigging and the costs - what would you do in this situation?

I wonder what the comparisons of pay are between a US 4 hour gig and a UK 2 x 45 min gig actually are? -

I'm exactly the same.....been into metal, rock etc 30+ yrs. All of a sudden i can't get enough of Buddy Rich and his 1978 show in the Hague. Bizarre eh! -
I have to say there are so many elements of Jaco' playing that have influenced other players. I listen back through his music and can always pick out a little part that is useful. His music as a whole is certainly not what this cat listens too regularly but i find his bass playing really inspirational.

A question as an aside but pertinent to the topic. Do the Musicians Union do any recruitment and organising at all in the industry? It seems to me there are literally thousands of musicians that are prospective members that are untapped. -
His music is not my cuppa tea at all but the way he plays and interprets music i find fascinating. I only have his first album and the use of harmonics is really great imho.
I played full time 'pro' for a number of years; 5-hour sets with dance bands, on drums, Saturday and Sunday most week-ends in the summer season, and got paid ( and even, sometimes, a social security payment..!). That didn't stop me from playing other gigs with other formations, sometimes for free or petrol money, if I felt like it. Fast forward to retirement from a later IT career, during which I followed our eldest's ska/rock group, either as sound man or lighter, for free. I now play (more rarely, it's true...) with our two sons and a couple of chums; we gig half a dozen times in the year, usually, just for the pleasure of doing it, and because we're asked, by those who know us. Our repertoire of pop/rock covers, such as RATM, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Noir Désir, Bashung, Bowie, DeUS and many more. We're serious when we play, rehearse regularly, have and give a good time. Yes, we do it for nothing, whatever the length of set (usually 2 x 1-hour sets...). We provide our own PA, backline, lights and all. There are many folks that like to play, have rehearsed to get good enough and are willing to spend their time enjoying a great day, from loading the truck until sitting back in an armchair at 2 in the morning, having given a good evening's entertainment to a few hundred people. It's not so difficult to understand, I hope. Yes, we could get paid. Yes, we're sometimes offered, and usually refuse, or take it and give it away. Some folks spend a week-end stock-car racing, at their expense. Others may do sky diving. We do rock and roll. It's getting more and more wearing as the decades pass, but I'll see about fitting my drums around a wheelchair before giving up. Maybe soon, too..!
I can absolutely relate to this Dad.....We just enjoy being a band and it suits us. Sometimes we earn a few quid and cover costs sometimes we don't but we always try to enjoy ourselves. I respect that Blue does it as a job and needs to earn from it. My day job earns me enough to be in a band 👍 -
In the states our bar gigs are four hours long. Are you saying you would haul full PA and lights and play for 4 hours for free? Blue
Possibly Blue possibly not. Depends on factors such as venue (do we like it) and location (can our friends / fans(?!?) travel there) Do we know the engineer (some you trust and some you don't) and which other bands are on the bill (it's nice to work with some bands and not as much with some others). The list isn't exhaustive. I certainly wouldn't rule it out doing it for nowt if it took our fancy.
