Last week in the comments the Thomann non playing basses got mentioned. The reason given was they were damaged stock that were un-sellable. With interest piqued I took a look, being not really interested in acoustic basses the JB-75 caught my attention. 44 euro was the asking price and with a 10 euro voucher to use it was ordered Friday night, arrived today so £35 and 2.5 working days to get here no complaints. I figured it was worth it for parts alone, Wikinson hardware and pickups and D'Addario strings. So out the box I scanned it for faults but couldn't spot any bar 2 tiny Ds stamped on the neck and body, this will be for damaged or decoration, but quite hard to see being at the heel and on the black of the sunburst. Must be a problem with the neck for electrics. Nope plugged in everything works grand and sounds good, not a huge variation in tones but acceptable. So what rendered it unplayable ! Sharp frets down one side, that was all. I've been a joiner for 30 years so if it cut my hand they'd be razor sharp, they're not but enough to snag your hand when going up and down the neck. Nothing a quick fret dress didn't cure. Now I know I got lucky, can't hope that every one sold as unplayable will have as minor a fault, but I'm mighty pleased. Then the day got better there was no room left in the racks so off to Argos for a stand, handed over the nectar card and the girl say " You've enough points to pay for this " Result good solid bass and a stand £35 all in . Yeah I'm smiling and the sun's out too. [attachment=171378:Jazz Bass (1).jpg][attachment=171379:Jazz Bass (4).jpg]

Glad you started this, was thinking the very same thing last night. I seem to do this fairly regular, granted there's more basses than sense here but last night it was the Harley Benton PB-50 strung with nylon. Good solid bass with no-frills before that it was the Retrovibe Evo. Flip side to this is I'm scared to play the old Washburns in case they don't cut it though I've a plan for that. Play the Squier Affinty after that POS they'll still sound good.

I'm with you there Bassman. The Grind is a fabulous bass,I'm lucky enough to have a Vietnamese model and there's no parting with that. Must come clean the GAS ain't cured, not when there's the fretless Tune Bass Maniac somewhere . [attachment=171100:Tune_fretless_Bass.jpg]

I've had a hankering for a fretless Curbow for a while but also anything Peavey takes my interest. So couple of weeks back I'm bidding on a Peavey Zodiac and a short scale fretless both on German eBay. I lose out on both and turn to Basschat where I see a fretless Peavey Foundation had been up for grabs. Yeah I miss that too. Following week it's Tangewood Canyon II fretless and another Zodiac. I pass on the Zodiac but no-ones bid on the Canyon. 2 seconds to go I'm outbid again. Back to Basschat, yet another Foundation for sale. Same result. I'm bearing up well cause the HB 4000 is due. The Tanglewood goes back up due to non-payer, I get it. Then the German fella contacts me Yup another non-payer. The Zodiac is mines. I knew to keep away from the decorative Thomann page but weakened yesterday.£35 for the Jazz bass, couldn't pass it up. Play, parts or to hang on the wall. Happy with any option. But last night,oh last night at 2315 a 5 string Foundation was ending. £26 then £28, 20 seconds I'm in with £32. It arrives week after next. Final price was £52. How can a Peavey go for only £52 ? Seller thinks it's because the neck's out slightly, I think it's cause apart from a few enlightened folk THERE'S NO PEAVEY LOVE. GAS cured with a bang

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
kodiakblair replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
No half as interesting as how many variations Washburn did in the same line. -
I've seen some rubbish appear on ebay, but this takes it to another level. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LOOK-no-reserve-Coldplay-UNIQUE-bass-guitar-rare-hand-painted-viva-la-vida-/131280185273?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1e90e8a7b9 Now the definition of art is personal. I define this as starting with the letter S. Don't they have a friend who'd break the news to them gently.

That's a steal for the SGC.

Get 2 pairs and try the ones recommended by jazzyvee. After years of neglect I'm left with crap hearing and constant tinnitus. Believe me it's not good.Look after your hearing or you will regret it. I know I do.

Zord We're waiting on Owen's arriving for details like string spacing etc. For the rest my own post on the BZ 4000 or AT's on the 7 string should give you an idea what to expect.

I've asked over on the TB Westone/Electra owners thread for you. And PM'd a couple of owners. Can only hope somebody replies. Some good guys on that thread.

Bass collection bass pickup replacement. Recommendations?
kodiakblair replied to Skinnyman's topic in Repairs and Technical
Good thread. I've a Peavey Zodiac coming this week and was considering Entwistle if the pickup was crap. And now I've heard of 2 options if I decide to change the pre-amp in my 310. Quality guys Thanks -
I don't mind white but this popped up about an hour after I done the deal on a Zodiac. Last 2 weeks I've been looking at fretless and Zodiacs, twice I get outbid then a fretless Foundation appears here for about an hour. At the weekend the fretless Tanglewood went back up and I got it then a guy in Germany got in touch about a Zodiac. It's on the way, can't say I'm not tempted.

Is anyone looking for a 5 ? And how would we convince them. Still I don't mind being part of a select group of 5. Got mines close to hand just now and stand by what I said Thomann got this so right. Give it a couple of weeks somebody will get one. Then we'll be 6 but being the Gang of Four on Basschat sounds quite cool. I've asked over at Big Bass Tabs but about the 5'er,not holding my breath though. The site's not really for me.

I'm with AT regards the Harley Benton BZ. Currently the 5 string is £208 and £223 for the 6. I got the 4 string same day AT got the 7. Cracking bass, compared it to my Cirrus,Millennium, a Traben Neo and 2 Vintage basses V1004 and V1005. It held it's own no problem. Can't fault you for hoping on a Curbow as I wouldn't part with mines.
-
Owen here's hoping you're not disappointed. Though if it's anything like mines and AT's experience you won't be. With all the different versions the BZ range should be a potential purchase for everybody. What's the count so far AT any idea ?

NBD: Harley Benton BZ-7000 7 String active bass
kodiakblair replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
That's an amazing price. I think sales of 6s will suffer with the pricing of the 7s. As for value, there's nothing on the market compares to it. £230 still getting you just a passive basswood 4 string most places. -

Thomann's hit the nail on the head with the BZ models. Be interesting to hear how the 5 and 6 stringers are rated. -
Great to hear you're enjoy it AT I bought a set of Roto 66s a while back 85 - 175(F#) Haven't got round to trying them on anything yet as it's definitely a filing job. so can't comment on tension. 3 band EQ's a huge help eh.
