  1. It's a terrifying thought but this was a step up from my first bass 😬
  2. I don't remember them being nice about anything, not that I expected or wanted them. All I wanted was the faulty item replaced with little fuss. Thomann may not be "3 bags full sir" but their CS was a damn sight better than a certain London shop who lied about replacing a bass then lied about doing a repair on it. Give me cold formal yet efficient over smiles every time 👍
  3. Thomann would suggest 'return for refund or replacement. They actually prefer buyers follow that course of action, it allows them to identify dodgy batches/ pull them from the shelves and hold a very large stick over the factory at fault.
  4. I believe there is now a huge amount of free information available online will address any set up issues.
  5. Most of us managed to survive unscathed. Truth be told most beginners give up simply because learning any skill/craft/art requires time and effort.
  6. Massive thread about them on TalkBS 😄 From what I've read most folk, who appreciate they're buying $100 instruments , are happy enough; the basses allow new players to learn without too much hassle and occasional players to dabble. Cheap, cheerful and does the job 👍 Been swithering about the Fazley surf green hot rod, seeing that blue/maple Glarry I think the Fazley is history 😄
  7. Fingers crossed you get a speedy resolution 👍
  8. I knew there was a class action coming. Think FMIC are stuffed, lassie bringing the action has pretty decent credentials. Just hope it doesn't drag on for years.
  9. "and the lazy bugger still hasn't sent me any photos how the back of the chopped headstock looks !!"
  10. Back in the 80's I was shopping for a Fender P. Played a bunch of them then , just for something to gauge against, tried a Tokai HP. Never gave Fender a 2nd thought for the next 30 years 😃 Congratulations on your wise choice.
  11. A pal asked to do that on his sunburst version. No idea if it was an improvement as I never got the chance to play it before the swap. Another 2 jobs I did were wire the Warman in parallel and knock up a Stingray preamp. Nothing wrong with the stock tuners or bridge so left them alone.
  12. That'll be Runway Pro Audio, formed out of the Runway Music shop in Horley.
  13. To keep it under 8lbs. Ditch the Gotoh Hi Mass bridge, it sevres little purpose except add weight IMHO. Ditto for the full size CTS pots, bloody massive cap and those 'heavy duty' knobs. Knobs alone weigh near 2 oz 😮
  14. I had a different outcome. Pre-ordered a bass, Thomann had it delivered before sales went live on their website 🙂
  15. Aye, Alan Entwistle Neodymium split coils came as standard in those basses. Was a great bass, massive regrets over selling it 🙁
  16. Not strictly a standard jazz bass and you'd have to hunt down an older model; the early Revelation RPBX had a 42mm nut.
  17. Sure don't but there'd be a better chance at rich if I didn't have another 50 basses 😄
  18. I've one of those basses, Harley Benton PB-50. Seen more play in the 9 year I've owned it than anything else. Fenders are in cases upstairs while the Benton always remains within reach 👍
  19. I just posted about this half hour back. The day I made the decision to go and buy a Fender put me off buying one for nearly 30 years; now I've three 😃 You need to put in some effort and go play a few, if one feels/sounds right then buy it 👍
  20. Many years back I felt the time had come to up my game and buy a Fender P. Headed to Denmark St and played a fair few. No real idea what my expectation was but I wasn't blown away. Tried out a Tokai just because there was one handy, won't say it was the best P-bass I've played; it was the best played that day 👍
  21. Not really true but it appears that way. It's down to perception. A bright jangly roundwound puts out the same information when run through Alnico or Ceramic. Difference is Ceramic has a stronger pull and that translates into a higher output . Human brains are hardwired to hone in on certain conditions , higher/brighter/louder = better.
  22. I don't see much value in Fenders except with resale, even then only if you've bought it used in the first place. That said you can still take a hit with 2nd hand, not many folk clamouring to buy Dimension models. I like the look of the AV II 54 but £2050 is a hell of a price, then there's the fact demand for chubby neck single coil P-bass is limited. You could lose £500 if selling on. For that £500 hit I could easily build a 51/54 style P-bass. Truth be told with £500 I could , and have, build 2 of them 🙂
  23. No, only as 4 string ATM.
  24. It's the best way . Get yourself up the merchants. Dressed 5x2 pine will cost £25, that's a 4.2M length and enough for 3 bodies 🙂 I've templates so it's no trouble to run another one off. Plenty of pickups out there for small money. It's a doddle 👍
  25. Can't comment on the Sire weight, owned 6 PB-50s ; all were around the 9lb mark.
