  1. Congratulations @uk_lefty Lovely bass , all the more lovely for being left handed 👍
  2. For no good reason, other than they cost me £20, I bought a set of Rotos Drop Zone + Bloody hell, farmers use thinner wire for fences 😄 Tuning the F# was a nightmare. I imagine being heard would be another nightmare, doubt anything I had in the house was up to it. Thankfully this particular "I wonder" folly of mine was cheap. @toddwright138 If you fancy trying the Rotos, send me a pm 👍
  3. Not ironic, it's a tried and tested method for filling nut slots.
  4. Hope you're sending it back for a refund or undrilled replacement 👍
  5. The stock cap value is much too high for treble bleed. Here's some alternate options. https://octavedoctor.com/treble-bleed-circuit-what-is-it-and-do-i-need-it/
  6. It's normal. Peavey were using treble bleed wiring back in 1978. It's standard in Fender Pros , here's their reason ( in the red box).
  7. Aye it's normal and you can stop it happening quickly and cheaply 🙂 All you need is a cap or a resistor+ cap.
  8. No argument from me . Doubt that would be of much help. You're looking for a brighter tone , I generally use a 0.1uf cap/ roll the tone pot back/ tapes or flats and have been known to employ a foam mute. We're looking for different things from a bass 👍 Take on board @Bassfinger's post and re-read the Herrick spec. Both the alnico and neo singles use 42AWG and are wound to 7.8k ohm. The only difference is in the pickup height, the Neo is 4 mm taller. I wouldn't be surprised if the alnico and neo were the exact same item only the neo version has 2 bar magnets either side of the poles; in a similar manner as the Entwistle PBXN. There's no "added treble" it's just the increase in output makes you more aware of the existing highs. This lad explains it quite well.
  9. Need to take this up tomorrow , dead beat tonight.
  10. Chuffed to naafi breaks 🙂
  11. Cheers @umcoo
  12. Became the owner of a Danelectro this week and it's all thanks to Nick. Seller had it listed as a collection only sale. Nick not only collected it , he did the buying/packing and posting too. An absolute gem of a man , one of Basschat's finest.
  13. Continuing my trend of simple basic instruments I'd been hankering for a Danelectro. Owned then sold a Wild Thing model a few years back . No regrets over that; it was a short scale and I don't enjoy playing those 🙂 Watching Dano prices increase , I decided to build one instead 👍 Parts bought , template made, body blank etc . Had the choice of 2 necks, guitar neck re-purposed for 15 frets or a 32" scale from Retrovibe. Then apathy kicked in hard 😧 Few months ago a lass near the Welsh border listed her Dano on a Facebook page, collection only meant 700 mile round trip 😢😢😢 Re-listed the other week there for the attractive price of £235 , I gave serious thought to the drive 😃 Common sense told me ask for help on Basschat. @alyctes was the first to reply then @Old Horse Murphy a few hours later ; fantastic result. Turned out Nick passes the lass's place on way to rehearsal. He did much more than just pass her place, he handled the entire purchase for me , what a guy 👍 Nick had it packed up and delivered to me by Thursday. Sadly I was up and about at 3am so was deadbeat by the evening , all I had left in the tank was a quick thank you note before bed. Different story by Friday 😃 Spent a good few hours last night playing it and I'm over the moon . Nick had warned me it was strung with Fender flatwound cables and the action was a mile high. Bought a set of Rotosound 30-90 but tuned the flats DGCF and the action dropped to easy playing level 😃 Feast your eyes on this sparkling lovely.
  14. That's not so good Paul. My 14 plate Berlingo has 190,000 miles under it's belt 🙂
  15. Guitar players will tell you hum is part of the single coil tone 🙂 Personally I don't find it a problem , nobody notices it above the din made by a band 👍 You definitely lose something using stacked or split 51 singles . If a normal healthy kid running about full of E numbers is the single coil ; the split/stacked is the same kid after a double dose of Ritalin 🙁
  16. Yet the blurb says different. " adds beef and warmth to the traditional vintage tone." " we came up with a more robust pickup that added output and low end" " but wish it had a fuller, ballsier tone, " Just a thought . Have you considered the effect your hunt for brighter highs will have on the hum ? A single coil P-bass is a hum antenna which no amount of shielding will get rid of completely. Darker tone can divert folks attention from it but I'm thinking super bright highs tone will bring hum front and centre ; probably with a spotlight on it so everyone knows the cause 😆
  17. I've fitted Bloodstone , Herrick, Jess Loureiro , Muddslide, Seymour Duncan and £8 alnico units made in China. Don't recall issues with any of them. I do recall one fella having trouble installing a Duncan SCPB-2. After trimming the bobbin to fit he then discovered he hated the tone , "lacking character" was his description. Not PB-50 related but I also remember folk on TalkBass reporting trouble when attempting to install Duncans in Fenders and Squiers , length was fine but they were too wide. Herrick wind to order so will trim the bobbin should you ask beforehand.
  18. They do sell a J/MM, Enhanced series. Maple or maple/ebony neck, 22 s/steel frets and a Tusq nut. Alder or ash body. Cream,LPB or natural finish. £250 inc delivery. https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_enhanced_mj_4mn_natural.htm
  19. Hope you enjoy the twists and turns 👍
  20. Folks on TalkBass have been playing the OP's game for a while now 🤣 https://www.talkbass.com/threads/i-have-an-old-bass-its-was-my-very-first-bass.1541590/#post-25917484
  21. Aye , you'd be scunnered finding this on your MIA Fender 🤣
  22. ? After the factory change in 2018, some owners reported the hook up wire from the single coil being visible under the scratchplate. The channel was formed by drilling from the top , one hole angled into the pickup cavity while another went towards the control cavity. PB-50 FR belongs to friend, burst is one of mine.
  23. Is there anyone near Ross-On-Wye ?  There's a "Collection Only" bass I'm interested in , hoping some kind soul could do the middle man job.  700 mile round trip rules this one out 🙂

      @Old Horse Murphy

Thanks very much , I'll be in touch after work 🙂

  24. Always a good shout. Try a vinyl film/wrap from eBay for starters , cheaper and easier to do than a spray can. Not a problem. I've talked quite a few folk through the process using the barest minimum of tools. I'll message you 🙂
