Wear lots of make up and wearing lots of clothes with leopard print always helps. And dont forget the ripped tights... Joking aside its something Ive always wanted to learn as well. To practice my technique, I've started my playing Panic Station by Muse, its nice and slow but you do have to use both ends of the neck! Undisclosed Desires by Muse as well is another one to start as there is some 'pops' in there too.

Does anyone on here use a Variax bass as their main axe ?
Weststarx replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
That's the thing that struck me about them, electronically superb but I thought they were ugly....that ridiculous thumb rest that curves in/out baffles me. It should really have looked like a Yamaha RBX A2..... funky, modern looking with cool sound switching. Totally missed opportunity I reckon.
I want one fo these ^^^^ I'd never heard of the Variax before seems like an interesting concept! -
Don't you just hate really talented kids?
Weststarx replied to leftybassman392's topic in General Discussion
Yeah kids like that and loads others on Youtube blow my bind and make me want to just sell everything and give up. But credit where credits due, the kids can play!! It will only last until they buy an xbox anyway... -
So...I'm selling up and having a break from playing because....

One of the first thing my employer did when I started my desk job was to fill out a questionaire with all questions like if I felt comfortable with things like my chair, desk, monitors and the distance between all of them hahah. Even to the point where It was asked and they also checked that I could see all the letters clearly on the keyboard and none were faded! I did laugh at the time thinking how ridiculous is this? But it obviously done for a reason! -
Allowing someone to use your bass at a gig.
Weststarx replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
I would have said no as well. (Unless it was someone I knew personally or a bass player of a band ive seen quite a few times and sussed out that his not an idiot) Bring a backup to every gig. Simple. -

I've noticed quite a few positive posts on this forum about Peavey basses. Not played one myself but from general opinion on here they seem to sound pretty decent!

We played this last night at band practice. When it was suggested that we play it I did think 'typical cover band song'. Then when we came to play it I've never found playing a song so much fun! The Bluesy bassline (at least I think it is) was awesome to play with a band and I couldnt stop smiling! This then got me wondering what Blues I'm missing out on - I've never really listened to any Blues ever. Any of you guys and gals know of any Blues artists I can check out? Thanks

To me, where something made does not bother me in the slightest. However when it comes to guitars, because of all the snobbery I have always kept away from Made In China stuff apart from when I brought a Fender Dimension bass which I ended up selling because I just found it annoying. The made in china on it always put me off slightly which I know it shouldnt but it did because of the stigma put on eastern made instruments by gear snobs.

The one song (Cover) that you would love to gig and why ?
Weststarx replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
Slipknot - Duality I'm not a Slipknot fan as such but just because its epic! -
Interesting stuff!

The Laklands look cool but I honestly done see the point... If you wanted a P & J Bass why would not just buy a Fender for the same price or a few hundred quid cheaper if you went for a MIM?
I had a Fender product from Strings Direct delivered by Interlink Express, the day I ordered it, I was given a email confirmation - it would be delivered Monday, with a 'Follow my Parcel Now' link. On the delivery day, this gave me a 1 hour time slot, the driver's name & online tracking where you can watch the van/driver's progress with an updated ETA for my parcel . My delivery was number 50 on his schedule & while he was making his previous drops, 48 & 49 I could see which roads he was in - just around the corner! Brilliant! Fascinating to watch as your parcel gets closer if you've nothing better to do & yes it was delivered in perfect condition, inside the 1 hour given. Fedex are also excellent. If i get a confirmation that says Yodel or My Hermes is delivering I dont hold out much hope....

Hi Guys, Me and my band recorded 4 songs for our covers band just to promote ourselves with about 6 months ago and they remain unmixed. The studio say they dont have time to do it and the people who were supposed to be doing it havent done anything for 4 months either. I've had enough now of leaving it for the band to do and either want to do it myself or if someone from the world of BASSCHAT fancies a go getting it done for me I'm happy to pay for it! Is there any decent free software that will do the trick? Thanks

I found my Fender Rumble 15 pretty crap to be honest, probably because its only a 15 watt amp. The Fender Rumble 300 or 350 (cant remember) I borrowed off the local recording studio was absolutely awesome sounding and sounded great with my Fender P Bass. I would have thought the Fender Rumble 40 would be a decent buy, and I think the new ones look like the bassman amps and look fantastic as well.

My Hartke LH500 I brought recently is the nicest sounding amp I've owned. I'm deffinately going to buy Hartke again!

Tips for learning how to do backing vocals while playing
Weststarx replied to BassYerbouti's topic in General Discussion
Yeah my keys are: - Learning to play without looking at your bass (it massively helps if you use the same bass or type of bass so it becomes muscle memory where the right notes are. If you use different instruments with different fret spacings an strings etc it starts to become a bit more difficult to do) - Simplifying bass lines where you need to (a pain in the ass sometimes because there will be a lot of cool basslines that you'll miss out on because they are difficult to play in time and sing over as well - though nothings impossible with enough practice, I just cant be bothered to mess a song up ) To practice its also worth just singing along at rehearsals to songs you dont do back up vocals on, (without singing down the mic) just to get used to singing and playing at the same time. With that you can also practice singing in key with your singer as well. My process with new songs is to learn the bass line first and nail it the best I can and then add the back up vocals after. As long as you know where you fingers are going and when it becomes a lot easier to focus on singing. It then ends up automatic - like driving a car and changing gear. -
maybe the £255 isn't that steep IF the quality is high?
Thats what im thinking... I think if it was 'cheap' then id probably end up regretting it!
-
Spill
They quoted £255.... A lot of money, but I guess its the costs of the labour. I'd much prefer to drop it off myself locally, sending my bass off to someone who I havent met is a scary prospect for me (no offence to anyone here as im sure you would look after it - its just for my own piece of mind!) Even at £255 its still very tempting because I just love that colour.
Haahahaha!! In the early nineties I was in a band which had just signed a deal with a major label and we were rehearsing our set 9-5 for weeks. When we finally got onto the circuit the singer was never, ever sober. And it wasn't just booze, either. It turned out that the success of our careers was based on the likelihood of a heroin addict (the singer) not taking heroin and an alcoholic (also the singer) not having a drink. Which might have been OK if he had been able to keep it together enough to perform, but he failed to do so in the most spectacular way imaginable. So hilarity ensued and we went from strength to strength. Actually, no... we didn't. It was an embarrassing train-wreck which got litigious and I abandoned ship. My current band have a no-drinking rule.
I cant drink and play... Beer really de-hydrates me and makes my mouth really dry which is useless for backup vocals. I'm not a massive drinker either so 2-3 beers and im feeling it at that stage already - I'd be a wreck if started drinking when we turned up to set up.

NBD. Alpine white Epiphone Thunderbird pro classic IV
Weststarx replied to police squad's topic in Bass Guitars
Just a quick update. This has perfect balance. People say Tbirds have terrible neck dive but not on this. Any more love out there
I had one and sold it becuase of the neck dive. I was so disapointed because I think the white one is the coolest looking bass ever but it was just impossible to play. -
I thought keyboard players did things like church and reading - not getting pissed! (A joke of course)
