I was offered a ticket to see AC/DC with Bon. I was only 15, so turned it down. He died a few months later. I went to the Back in Black tour gig, but always regretted that one. The only other big regret was Thin Lizzy. I just never seemed to be available when they came. Now it's too late. I can't complain right enough. I've seen Guns n Roses with the classic line up. Hanoi Rocks a good few times and loads of other great bands. One of the perks of being an old fart!

I seen a really good cover band way back in the late 80's and the bass player was , at one point , resting his chin on his bass! Even back then , I knew that just wasn't cool!

No doubt he had talent but clearly little taste!

When I go to see my next big gig ...
By the time a band gets popular enough for tickets to be expensive/fast selling they are no longer playing the kind of music I want to see/hear.
How nice for you -
I really fancy one of those Epiphone Jack Cassady basses , but only in the white. I only ever see gold or black ones for sale. I wanna white wan!

How long do your new strings retain their twang?

I find they lose the sound I like after one gig. Cost means I have to put up with them for longer, but it's usually three gigs then boil them ! -
I avoid this kind of problem by only seeing really unpopular bands
To be honest, I usually follow this philosophy, but every now and then, the buggers get popular! -
When I go to see my next big gig ...

I remember trying to get tickets for the last but one AC/DC gig. Tickets went on sale at 10 o clock. I tried the phone and pc constantly for 45 minutes. When I finally got through, it was sold out. I went on to eBay immediately and there were tickets going for 3/4 hundred quid. I was really cheesed off, I mean these people were beating genuine fans to the tickets, just to make money off them! We managed to get tickets for the last tour, but I never seen any touts outside. I would have loved to have had the chance to give them some abuse! -
I take it you use rounds and like the A for the metallic ring you get compared to the E at the 5th? If so, push the mids and the E will sound better, although at the 5th, it's always going to be a fuller, thicker sound. If you know this or use flats, kindly disregard this advice
Unless I'm mistaken, the bottom 5 strings get progressively lower? 😉
'Twas but a joke, I'm talking about the high C

I think they should be banned. 6 strings? On a bass ? It's supposed to be about the low end, isn't it ?
An alternative solution?... Its a T-Bird- and it should be illegal to wear it above waist height!
I agree, but thanks for putting that horrible picture in my head of someone wearing one across his chest.
The Black Keys in Manchester a couple of years ago were also awful. Spent the first couple of songs thinking 'is it me being a picky musician type or is the drummer way off?' Then everyone we were with asked me the same question. He was right out of time, varying wildly during songs. If you're going to be a one guitar and drums band then I'd think that being tight is even more essential.
We had tickets to see them when Patrick hurt his shoulder and they cancelled the whole European leg of their tour. Never rescheduled. Dave Grohl broke his bloody leg and came back and performed! Black Keys music, great, attitude, pish!

That has to be the worst. A band with not enough material having to flesh out a show! I've been there myself and it's worse when you have an unresponsive audience and you end up going through the material too quickly!
Watched a Thin Lizzy documentary once, and even Midge Ure was wondering how he got that gig. He had to learn approximations of the guitar lines on the plane to the US tour.
To be fair, he was just a stand in for a short time
Tygers of pang tang . Electric ballroom . All of us in the crowd were angel witch fans back on the day, but Jess cox was grating
That's funny, TOPT were the very first " proper" band I seen. They were supporting Saxon in 1980, wheels of steel tour. I thought they were great, but then again, I would have enjoyed anyone playing guitars back then. I must admit, Jess Cox doesn't possess the best voice. They did improve later when John Deverill joined. He had a great rock voice!

It's always horrible when you see your heroes failing onstage. Another episode I remember, and I feel guilty for saying this in light of his problems and eventual death , was at a festival years ago. Rory Gallagher was on the bill. We were very excited to see him but he came on obviously very drunk. Couldn't play or sing and at one point dissapeared off stage, leaving the bass player and drummer playing on, looking at each other and at the wings. Rory eventually reappeared and stumbled through a very short set. It was sad to see and he died not long after, so I guess we were witnessing the tail end of his demise from alcohol. On the same bill, and again, I feel guilty as he suffered from various ailments, was Edwin Collins, ex of OrangeJuice. He stumbled through a shambolic set and at one point introduced a harmonica player, who, at his cue, started singing woo woo, woo woo. We surmised that he must have forgotten his harmonica. It was all a great laugh, but you have to feel sorry for Edwin, as nothing went right for him that day. At one point he jumped on to a monitor which fell over, he then stood on a drum kit, much to the annoyance of the roadie from the Levellers, who were next on. He then jumped off stage into the "moat " in front of the baying masses and his mic lead wasn't long enough! We were right at the front having a great laugh at all of this this'

Another one from the 80's was the Diamond Head gig in the Glasgow Apollo. Tank were the support. Algy Ward had laryngitis and really shouldn't have performed. They were booed rotten and when the drummer sarcastically threw his drumsticks into the crowd, they were thrown back!

Talking about loud, I remember in the 80's, going to see Mamas Boys in the Mayfair in Glasgow. They were so loud, it was actually painful and you couldn't discern any of the songs. We spent most of the gig trying to work out which song they were playing ! I could never understand this heavy metal obsession with being the loudest.

In light of my recent thread about who was the last band you seen live, I was wondering, after reading the replies and hearing how good most of the bands have been, who has been a disappointment? I wanted a rogues gallery of bad bands to avoid. As I said in my other thread, Chastity Belt take the plaudits for being the all time most rubbishy band I have ever had the misfortune to see. Another great disappointment, although it was rather a long time ago, was Sigue Sigue Sputnik, who were slack, made mistakes, looked as if they had no clue. Tony James was the only musician in that band, playing his wierd guitar/bass/keyboard effort that I'm sure someone will tell me was.
Michael Monroe was support (Hanoi Rocks) and that excellent as well, straight back to the eighties, great fun.
I absolutely LOVE Hanoi Rocks and Michael Monroe. I've seen them a few times and they always deliver. Never seen Michael on his own though.

I have, so far at least, never forgotten my arm, so maybe that's why I don't experience neck dive. I have on occasion however, much to my chagrin, experienced brass neck or red neck !

I'm not a fan of chorus on a bass. I have the Boss pedal, maybe that's why I don't like it, but to be honest I've never heard chorus and thought , ooh, that's nice. I never use my chorus.
The most used excuse is that because the populace is spread out over a greater distance in the Highlands, it costs them more to have an efficient delivery network, which is almost plausible, apart from the fact that they sub-contract all the work out to another company who has more vehicles. They have more vehicles, because they get sub-contracted by the major courier companies to do their deliveries for them. Thing is though, from prior experience of courier companies, I would much rather have this local company doing the deliveries anyway, they're far more reliable than the others!
See, this is what annoys me. Because there's all these companies that regularly deliver all over the highlands, I see no excuse for not delivering ! I get stuff from all over, in record time and yet companies from dahn sath, or sometimes even east Scotland, will tell me, don't deliver to Scottish highlands ! Lost a sale then chums!
