1. I know, I was being hilarious. But I stand by the fact that percussive instruments can be played any number of ways, dampened, side swiped, whatever, but if you hit them harder, they are louder. It's basic physics. I can't understand how you are making an argument of this fact Sigh
2.
...but one is not supposed to 'hit' drums, but to 'play' them. It's not like chopping wood. There are also many ways to dampen drums or render them almost silent, if there is too much testosterone flowing. Why isn't the drummer at the back of a TOTP shoot deafening everyone..? It's been treated, that's why. An anecdote..? I may..? Thank you... We're back in the late '50s, at Southville Junior School. All of us kids were invited out into the playground for a road safety lesson from the police. Amongst other animations, we were lined up on the grass to watch a police Triumph ride past us. We were asked to judge which 'run' was the fastest. Three times he went past, firstly moderately, second with a mighty roar, the third run almost silent. No hesitation; we all judged the second run to have been the fastest. Not at all; we'd been fooled. That loud run was with a slipping clutch in 1st, the last run was in top gear, at tick-over, and was, in fact much faster than the others. We all learned, at that tender age, that one should not judge speed from the sound, but by keen and careful observation. The moral..? Playing too loud is not, automatically, good drumming; quite the opposite. Don't be fooled into thinking that loudness = goodness. We school kids learnt that at the age of 8 or 9. Some never learn, it would seem. (Sigh... )
Ok, if you "play" the drums harder, they get louder and if you "play "them softly they get quieter. Doesn't really matter a jot how fast they are going!
3.
As a DD fan, I've always liked JT's sound and I thought it sounded pretty good. Cut right through the mix.
I concur. I was never a fan in their heyday, but always loved his sound!
4. I don't think there is a certain volume you have to play at, but in my experience , you need to be louder than the noise made by the audience or you end up being background music. It's good that people at the back can still hear the band clearly, but you don't want folk down the front to be uncomfortable. The sound of drum and bass at a good volume is good to hear but you have to compromise to some extent. I find that after a while, our ears become used to the noise and start filtering out certain frequencies and you struggle to hear. It's easy to fall in to the trap of turning up to combat this, when in fact, the sound out front has not changed at all.the real secret is to have a low stage volume and let the pa do the work. As for mic'ing up drums in small venues. We have to do this in our local, because the volume of the punters is immense and acoustic drums get lost.
5.
You obviously don't like rock.
I agree. That's just a troll type comment to say most rock bands are dull and boring and should be ignored. Which is exactly what I haven't done...... Damn !
6.
Much good advice above about what sound you want and the 'sweet spot' moving with different fret positions plus the string spacing issue. Be bold, engineer a sliding pickup like the Gibson Grabber
Please don't, as sliding pick ups/ Gibson grabber are the work of the devil!
7. A sound is musical if it didn't come out of Kanye Wests mouth!
8. Very nice , unfortunately, I can't justify spending that on a guitar just now. Good luck with the sale!
9. Lost weight but gained a rather tasty stunner!
10. I can't understand the negativity about Adam Clayton either. I agree that I'm not particularly a fan, but that's more down to that annoying twatt Bonio, who does my head in, but Adam is a perfectly good musician who has produced some great bass playing over the course of their albums and is well thought of.
11. Surely the sweet spot is subjective , as some want a punchy sound and some want bassy, therefore the pick up being biased towards either bridge or neck , will deliver desired results
12.
Good review but you did not say what sort of Astra it was......
A very big Astra by the sound of how much was in it! Great review of superb cabs by the way. I have a super twin and love it and can't see me ever changing!
13.
Ability, Skill and Understanding is a very broad spectrum of which only the degrees vary, but we are all on and spread out across that spectrum.
How true. I think there's a few musical snobs who think ability is about flashy runs and technical dexterity rather than pure feel for music. I myself, think lead guitar with feeling like Slash , is better than lead guitar with speed, like Buckethead. Same with bass playing. Then again, that's only my opinion.
14. Not wanting to get into arguments, but I can't see how you can hit drums hard and be quiet. That's how they work. The harder you hit them , the louder they sound and vice versa.
15. It's surely down to the sender to track the item down. I would tell them to do this or give you a refund. It's hardly your fault.
16. The guy out of Kings of Leon freely admits he was only asked to join because he was related to the others and it took him until their last album to actually start knowing what he was doing. Talk about being lucky! I suppose there's lots of famous musicians in big bands who are only there because they are mates with a great songwriter.
17. Anyone slagging Cliff Williams off doesn't know his past. They hired him because he was a better player than they had. The reason he plays simple lines is because he is told to. Listen to the drumming in AC/DC. No rolls or fancy patterns. It's all about the lead guitar. I would play simple lines all day if it meant the security of being in a band like that!
18. Yeah, he is a great songwriter and has a superb voice. I'd forgotten just how many great songs they had until I recognised them . He did say they were only performing Icicle Works songs and not his solo stuff. My mate has his latest solo album. I'm gonna have to invest in that I think !
19. Whilst I also agree to a certain extent, I think it's wrong to judge a drummist on the fact that he can't not hit hard. Our one is primarily a rock drummist and that's his style. He's a bloody good drummist too! I bet no one told Jon Bonham or Kieth Moon to quieten down !
20. I have a Barefaced Super twin which has the 2x12's. I was always a multiples of 10 type of guy as I thought that would give me more punch per pound. I am now converted, although I would still think twice about 15's !
21. Definitely do mate, the bass player Roy Corkill is superb as are the rest of the band come to think of it !
22. We just went to see The Icicle Works last Saturday in King Tutts Wah Wah hut and I just had to tell everyone how damned good they were. I can't understand why, with the wealth of catchy material at his disposal, that Ian McNab has not become massive! He is clearly very talented and has got some incredible musicians with him in his band. We seen them back in '87 at the Reading festival and they were one of the highlights. I must say, they are still brilliant. If you get a chance to catch them, do. One of the gigs of the year for me so far!
23.
That's all I'm trying to do. . . come out ahead and leave as many people as I can in my wake that are happier than when I started.
I concur !
24.
you are playing the music by numbers, which is my main issue with cover bands.
I'm just sorry that most of us are not blessed with your obvious talent for writing catchy original material!
