1. Ibanez make great basses, really fast necks, although I find the string spacing a bit tight on my 5 string
2. Just in case anyone hasn't seen him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACwy0u91B-g&feature=share&list=PL48067D9D830037A8&index=1 I don't know why, but I like it
3. I absolutely detest, when I go on youtube for a demo of a bass and some dick head slaps the sh*t outta the bass for the whole clip. Usually its that fast horrible kind of slapping that I hate. Its pure showing off and it certainly don't impress me much. I love the technique when done properly wit rhythm man! I do admit to liking that video of the Oriental guy dressed up as a girl, his slapping is amazing, plus his man whore abilities are second to none!
4.
Sound is a funny thing...
Nothing truer mate. I have seen me with a superb sound and as the night goes on, I find I can't hear it, but your ears are funny things too because as the night progresses, your ears block out certain frequencies, so the sound you worked so painfully to achieve, has disappeared to be replaced with mud!
5.
Roll back the bass and treble: viola! Mid boost!
Totally! I have found since getting my Barefaced super twin, I have had to pull back slightly on the bass as the cab has a much fuller sound than I had with my older cab. What you hear whilst standing next to your cab is not what the people out front are going to hear. Just take a walk next time you play and you will be amazed/dismayed at what is coming out front
6. I must say that Glasgow has just gotten another decent venue, The Hydro. I went to see Nickelback there and enjoyed it. I was sitting down right enough, but its certainly a lot better gig than the old SECC. Nothing can compare with the old Glasgow Appollo right enough. That place was legendary. So I guess its true. It depends on venue and act
7.
Same here - 19mm all the way! I find Ibanez 5 string spacings unplayably tight (except on the BTB series) so they might be worth a look.
I have a K5 and although its a lovely sounding bass, the strings are so close together that it makes me think twice about using it live.I think there is a trade off with Ibanez basses, because they have such fast necks at the expense of string spacing. I guess you just have to get used to it, but I fancy trying a Jazz 5 stringer as they look a lot more comfortable
8. I, personally find that I don't need better basses but I sure as hell want them. I am in a position now where I can afford to spend a bit more on a bass, so why not? You want the best and the best costs money. I mean you pay for the wood, the pick ups, the hardware, the craftsmanship . All these factor in to make a better bass, therefore cheap basses will not perform as well as a more expensive bass. At the end of the day, why should you settle for something that is of a lower standard if its your main hobby? Full time bass players don't use cheap copies. Why is this? I have always been a Fender man, but recently bought a Spector Euro 4LX and I have to say, that bass is amazing. It just feels better and the EMG pick ups are awesome. Thats not to say that the Fenders don't sound good too, just different. Maybe Im a bass snob, but I like to have good stuff as I feel playing a decent bass brings your playing on far more than cheap gear
9. I got one a few months back and I absolutely love it. It sounds the mutts and is so light. I have found the cab of my dreams!
10. I thought I was alone in this feeling. Its good to know that others feel the same way. I always think , right , Ive seen them, lets go. As you say, small gigs that are intimate and you can see the band are great, but stadium gigs are pants. I was at Rush a few years back and the gig was ruined by a couple of drunks who shouted the whole night for Zanadu. Every time a song finished "ZANADU...ZANADU!" It ruined the night for us especially when the lights went up and it turned out to be two skinny little runts who I could have taken but seeing as Im a shi**e bag, I didn't say anything. Nah, big gigs are not as good as they are cracked up to be, especially as you get older I can't understand how the Kate Bush gigs are being touted as a tour when they are all in bloody London. London is not the centre of the universe, at least not for all of us!
11.
Will I tell him not to get his future wife too excited!
Yeah, I reckon he has probably told her that he's parting with his treasured bass that he used when he was a rock star and it will bring in a tidy sum for the nuptials
12.
Er... even 350 is too much, isn't it..? Is this the same Squier Jazz that goes for about 255 new..?
Too right! I wouldn't pay anymore than a hundred for a second hand Squire
13. Happened to me recently with my Ampeg valve amp. I went straight into the desk with a DI. Sounded rotten but got us through. Turned out it was shoddy electrics in the venue ( a stable) and there was nothing wrong with my amp....phew!
14.
Sheryl Crow even sang about it I don't have digital I don't have diddly squat It's not having what you want It's wanting what you've got http://youtu.be/KIYiGA_rIls however...... you can tell by his equipment that this young man has some serious GAS issues http://youtu.be/rNzt3uNEVxU
How can I unsee that?
15. I have GAS a lot ! I find that I spend too much time looking at the inter web and thinking I need this or that instead of playing the stuff I already own! Its fun but financially crippling!
16. I have always played by ear and have never had any problems but then again, I started learning when you had to keep lifting the needle off the record to listen to pieces again and again. I have always had a band to interact with, so again, no problems. Thing is, I recently started thinking, I need something more, so I started getting guitar lessons. Ive always had a rudimentary ability on guitar, but wanted to learn proper like, so now I am finding a completely new interest in , not just guitar , but bass too, as I now have a decent clue about theory and what notes I am actually playing, due to scales and such, so, I would say if you want to really get into your instrument, by all means take lessons, but not just bass lessons. Guitar lessons from a decent teacher will bring you on on both instruments. Good luck and I hope you are happy with whatever you choose to do
17. Its all down to taste isn't it? I prefer a flat EQ with the mids pushed slightly. That way I cut through the rest of the band nicely without getting boomy bass. I do admit that in my practise room, scooped mids sounds great. I just find that for a nice balance, mids have to be pushed
18. Never been to Zwick but I have spent some time in Hamburg and seen a few really good bands. I have a friend who lives there and sings in a rock band. They play a place called Molly Malones quite a lot and that place is always jumping. The live scene in Hamburg is brilliant and the Reeperbahn is amazing to experience, highly recommended, although those with a sensitive disposition should probably avoid!
19.
Look at it this way. You've said you're into fitness. Now if you said to me "lets go to the gym" or "lets go running" - well I would come and last about 5 min and then need to give up. I couldn't run for an hour, or lift big weights (or even know what most the machinery is for in the gym. You would. Now what would you say to me then? Because I bet next time I went with you I might last6 min, then 7 min and so on... it's training. Likewise I can pick up a bass and play cleanly without fret buzz, you haven't learnt that control yet- but I don't think you were running marathons when you had just started either... practice and patience
THIS IN HEAPS!
20. As a newcomer to this site, though I have been playing for many years, my suggestion would be if you can't face taking time to pick up the bass, then maybe you have to admit its not for you. The bass is an unforgiving instrument if you have no one to jam with. Unless you are very good, it can sound a bit boring on its own. Sometimes you need a guitar or drums to bring it out from its boring shell. Believe me mate, if you stick at it, it can become the most satisfying hobby you have ever taken up. Its the same as with anything else, practise , practise and then practise some more. As some people have said before, why not try an open night or something of that ilk, to see what joy can be brought through jamming. The satisfaction of making even simple music with another like minded person is hugely satisfying if you stick at it. Good luck and I hope you keep at it
