Welcome mate, you will find plenty on here to help you on your bass journey.

You are so right!

I saw Jethro Tull a while back and Iain Anderson clearly has aged and we all know age does not come alone. The performance was cleverly interspersed with video of him singing the higher parts plus backing vocals from his band. no one felt short changed or anything. We all could see a legend playing his part in a show. I have seen video of Diamond Dave singing where his band are singing backing and you can clearly hear that it's Eddie and Michael's voices that are coming through. I thought that was a bit off as I am sure his band can at least have a decent effort at providing backing singing.

I think it's a pretty low blow. Kiss certainly do not need the money and people would flock to see them one last time anyway. Dave however most likely does need the money and although he is past his best, he is still a showman and can disguise his vocals with backing tracks. At the end of the day, a rock show is a show. It's not all about ability, it's a show with all the smoke and mirrors that that entails.

They have a cheek chucking a legend like Diamond Dave off the tour when the last time I saw Kiss they had an effin' painter supporting them!

Welcome Ian, lots of friendly folks on here to help with anything you want and you will have a laugh along the way. Playing the bass is a great way of honing hand eye co ordination. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I have to admit to being in the past a bit of a musical snob when it came to band gear. I saw a couple of poor bands using cheap gear and just thought once you have reached a certain level you should be using good gear. Since then I have seen a few very, very good bands and the bass player has been using Squire or Epiphone gear. I myself own a Squire five string bass and I just cannot find fault in it. It sounds the mutts. I think now that you should not be like I was. It doesn't have to be Fender or Gibson. I think there is another school of snobbery that has to have guitars that are in the ultra expensive band. do these guitars/basses sound £3000 better than a Fender or for that matter Squire? I myself used to have a Spector Euro. I could not for the life of me think how you could justify buying an American Spector when you could get the sound out of the Euro. Yes, people will argue the point but is there really THAT much of a difference?

I might splash out on one at some point. I am going to have to get rid of a few before buying anymore. I think I would rather have three or four guitars and basses that I really like/ want rather than loads of ones that I quite like.

Yeah, it was the bolt on neck non Vintage Pro version. Whenever I changed over to it from any other bass I had to turn up at the amp. It just felt cheap and nasty.

As I am also a member of Guitarchat, I stand tall with my choices.

One of my fave bands but Mrs Ubit hates the guys voice so always fast forwards their songs when they land on random. Edit. I watch their videos often but Nikki, the bass player still looks like she was recruited yesterday and is unsure of her bass parts. She always looks embarrassed to be on stage. I know she is decent but she needs to work on her stage craft.

The "Amazing Slow Downer" software is a great tool. You can slow down a piece of music and it stays in pitch

I went into a pedalboard. It had a compression pedal, phaser, chorus, distortion and a tuner. I only ever used the tuner.

I used to hate most of our set. Every time we played songs I liked the punters didn't. I would have loved to have played a mixture of country rock and traditional mixed in with metal. The country rock and trad. to please the punters and the metal for me.

The passing of a Basschat legend (sad news inside)
ubit replied to ped's topic in General Discussion
Very sad news, 59 is no age to go. -
We used to play Walking On The Moon if the police came in and Eye Of The Tiger if a fight broke out.

I got my ring finger tip crushed by an over zealous workmate. He said I wouldn't be going to the medic with that. I said there's no way I can hide it. Had to get the pad of my finger stitched. It was agony. Upshot is when I play guitar or bass and slide, I get pain in that finger. It's still tender a year later.

Collective Soul and Elton John. We used to cover this in an acoustic side project we did. Great song.

Anything with NIN in it gets my vote!

This is a good idea. I have an Ibanez K5. The higher strings sound bright and zingy. Just what I want but the B is dull and thuddy sounding. The strings are all from the same set. Im gonna have to try and mix.

Years ago before we went back to a full band we had a spell of playing as a two piece with a drum machine. I didn't really know about pushing mids as I thought with a hi fi the best sound is a smiley face eq, so I used that for my bass. It sounded good in the bedroom and I was happy to use that when we played live. I am a fingers player so when I heard about sad face eq's it was a revelation for me. My bass cut through so much better, By this time we were back to a full band set up so it was great to get the bass cutting through clearly. I couldn't believe that I had never even experimented with pushing mids. I just thought it had to be happy face. Certainly in the two piece I think the bass came through ok as I wasn't fighting with too much at those frequencies. We had years playing the circuit with this and everyone said it sounded ok and certainly when I went out front I thought it was ok. If only I had known about pushing mids and it would have sounded better than ok. I do play with a pick for certain songs but I am happy for that to cut right through so I leave the mids pushed even with the pick. I do like a toppy sound but with plenty bottom end.

I have always loved Thunderbirds but couldn't justify the price. I bought an Epiphone Thunderbird and was completely unimpressed. It was underpowered and sounded poor. The Vintage Pro must be a step up,

We have played plenty of places where the electrics have been suss. We were always more worried about our amps than the pubs were about our gear not being up to scratch. Nothing worse than going full tilt and the electrics cut out.

You could play small pubs with that. Small and light weight, loud as its powerful. Job done.
