Same. I was the bassist and the lead singer and I got more female attention when we played than I bargained for. Sometimes it was a pain in the bottom. Its hard to break to some people that they might be swimming in a different pool to you without sounding like a twatt.

This! I have been a fan ever since I went down the Friday market during school lunch hour and I bought 2112. I had no idea what they sounded like. I had just heard they were a heavy rock band. I was blown away and Geddy has always been held in Godlike status by me ever since.

Are you sure it's not just the bass pick up that is overwhelming the neck pick up?
-
You did ask about sound checking with or without effects though. Clearly a question like that on this 'ere forum will garner a lot of interest and commenting will ensue. If you are going to use something at the gig, soundcheck it.
-
I would say a sound check should be using everything you will use on the night. I cannot tell you how important sound checking is. Years ago we turned up at a wedding. We were playing with another band. They had set up before us and had left us no space whatsoever. We tried to set up as best we could but were forced to start without any kind of sound check. Our settings used to change wherever we played. Small pubs, large halls, strange shaped venues etc.The gig turned into a disaster and what made it worse was the guitarist wouldn't go out front to hear the sound. I was also the vocalist so couldn't . It was a real beam me up Scotty moment.

It's a great song. We used to cover it and it always went down a storm. I can't believe it's that old. Now I feel old!😧

Compression turned up can give a similar effect to muting.

Plugging in has changed my tone immeasurably. I was amazed at the difference!

This is a true musical legend!

I am a firm believer that strings and pick ups are all that matters with an electric guitar. Acoustics are different. I have built basses out of cheap parts from Ebay, bought decent pick ups and strings and they sound fantastic. I like to have decent basses but don't think wood or graphite make any difference to the sound.

I think its all relative. I am not playing at all just now due to my job, Covid and the fact that the music room is stacked full of new bathroom parts. Consequently my GAS has almost completely dried up. I no longer trawl through online shops and I actually sold a bass recently. Its quite sad but unless I have a change in circumstances very soon I think it may be terminal!

All through my yoof, I was into rock and metal but even then I was blown away by the bass in the Madness songs. It was so prominent and he has such a great sound. It totally changed poor songs into masterpieces for me.

When playing I like a loose pair so that I have room for the banana.

I have leaned this so many times over the years. It's all about the audience. obviously if you enjoy playing it, it is even better. Years ago we were adamant that we would play what we wanted to play and sod the baying masses. We very quickly realised that you have to play what the audience wants. Granted this was way down the leagues playing in pubs etc. If you are professional and have "made it" then you dictate what you want to play and you build up an audience of "fans" who like your style. If you are good they will love what you do and pay accordingly, so if someone else doesn't like it who likes a completely different genre of music, what does it matter to you?

It was memorable but I spent most of that time in a drink and drug fuelled haze.😳

I realise that I may be in the lucky minority but my Mrs doesn't mind me having loads of guitars as she realises its my hobby. In fact recently when I announced that I was selling one she was really surprised and asked was I sure?

For years when we were a two piece, we used an SR16 to play live. It was superb but it was my mate the guitarist that programmed it. I never learned. I bought my own to have in the house and I have never gotten round to learning how to programme it. It just seemed too complicated right enough.
-
Glad you liked it mate. There is always a way to get that bass.

Trouble is, round here if you get a parcel sent from anywhere in Britain through any carrier, it gets to Glasgow and then Menzies, who used to be Oban Express, will take it the rest of the way. I think I am going to have to use Menzies anyway as they are the only major carrier that works out of this area apart from the post office. Im just annoyed that they knew it was a guitar, they knew I had paid for 24 hour delivery and yet they took my money then failed to live up to any part of the deal.
-
Yup, Im in Oban in the west coast of Scotland, so that charge was WAY out of the budget!
-
Right, apologies if this has been broached before and if it's in the wrong place mods. please forgive me. I recently sold one of my bass guitars on this site and tried to arrange a carrier. I first tried Menzies. I sent a message to them and never got a reply for about 36 hours. Meanwhile I tried Euro Sender. Everything checked out ok until I noticed the surcharge was 650 Euro I quickly cancelled that. I then went to DX and got all the way through until the end and was told they won't send guitars. Then I got results with Parcelforce. They allowed me to enter all my details and it came to £17.60 plus £39 for insurance and then vat. All in £67. Fine I thought. 24 for delivery, all is good. Then I checked and they were not picking up for another day, so the 24 hours is out. Next day I waited all day and tried phoning loads of times ( try finding a human with ParcelForce) but they didn't appear. We got a postal delivery and I asked the girl if she was here to pick up? She said no but I will check. Then I managed to get a human in the Glasgow office. She said they don't do 24 hour from here. Why wasn't I told this when they took my money? Then I got a mail saying guitars are not covered in their insurance. Finally I cancelled the delivery as Dov65 kindly offered to train it up to pick up the bass. Then today I got a knock on the door and our local postie asked if we had anything for pick up? She explained that the 24 hour from here is from when the parcel reached Glasgow, so you pay for 24 hour delivery here and it can take three days before that starts! In short, who does everyone else use? I can buy guitars online and they arrive no problem.

It's strange though. A bass can cost you say, around a thousand pounds new. You can keep it in superb condition and then you think I need to do some work on the car or the house so you decide to sell it. You are going to lose a couple of hundred at least but even if you got your thousand back, that thousand doesn't go far in the real world. It's gone in seconds. You look to buy another guitar and all of a sudden a thousand pounds is a great deal of money again.

Personally I feel that it's looking more and more likely that we are never going to play as a band live again. I work ad hoc which means I never know when I am going to work or for how long. Same with my time off. I get 28 days holiday which is the only time in the year that I know I will be off. Coupled with the current Covid restrictions I realised that having 14 bass guitars plus various other instruments was ridiculous. So far I have only sold one and that was a conflict of emotions. I'm sure the others will tear me apart even more.

Sold my Spector Euro to Dov65 and had a flawless transaction. Very friendly guy who offered to pay before I had even managed to find a carrier. He was very patient with me as I tried various companies before getting parcel force to carry the bass with insurance. All in all a good transaction. Just the way it should be. Thanks Dov65 and thanks Basschat 👍
