I think this current situation will be the death knell of more live venues. I can't see live music in bars coming back anytime soon 😢

Anyone here got a Sire bass or know much about them?
ubit replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure but I think he was speaking figuratively. I think many people when in possession of cheaper priced basses will change them more often whereas, if you own an expensive model you might hang on to it a bit longer. This is by no means an exact science as many people sell expensive stuff too but I see his point. -
Let's all cheer up during Lockdown... Your Funeral Songs!!
ubit replied to P-Belly Evans's topic in General Discussion
I didn't realise that they actually used that at funerals. Its the most depressing dirge ever. Me and my mate used to jam it when we were playing for a laugh but we only played the first couple of bars before launching into something hilarious. -
Any Soviet vessel I have been in has always been very expertly handled and never in any danger from the capitalist swine that search aimlessly for ghosts!

Of course it is but to get to that level takes many thousands of hours practice. What age is he? I don't know but he looks very young. When I was that age I was running up hills and playing dead mans fall or knifey. Having fun with my mates!

I suppose we had Boney M and Milli Vanilli to be fair.

I actually know a guy who bought a Russian submarine escape suit on EBay after drinking! When are you ever going to need that?

You beat me!

Yup, this was me. Pop music back then was what people with no clue about "real music" were into. I was into "proper" guitar music. It wasn't until, as you say, I started listening to the amazing bass and Andy Taylors rock guitar playing that I thought, wait a minute, these guys can play! Pop music back then was at least played by real musicians. It was the Stock, Aitken and Waterman era that changed all that. Manufactured acts that relied on session musicians to write and perform their tunes so that they could warble over the top, each trying to out do the other with vocal gymnastics. You can probably tell I am not a fan of popular music. I have a pretty wide taste in music these days but pop and maybe jazz funk are my least favourites. I don't hate them, I would just rather avoid.

Indeed, another great blues influenced player who just knows when to fill and when to leave it out. Its all about the music, not look at me!

The fact is, no matter what other musicians think, especially other bass players, if you want to impress the general civilian population in a bar, a bit of slapping and popping will have them baying for more. I remember years ago we were playing in a busy bar and we were having one of the incredibly annoying gaps between songs where the guitarist would be having a drag on his fag or tuning up. Some of the audience started shouting to me to slap the bass. I was clueless at the time but I hit them with a very sloppy version of Higher Ground which I vaguely knew. They absolutely loved it. I thought I can't slap but even a simple passage and people think it's amazing. I decided that I would learn this technique and while Im not amazing by anyones standards, if I was to be asked again I could offer a more impressive show.

I am thwarted. Pesky kids. Still think he's an annoying twatt right enough. -
You would think with his money he could afford a foot pedal to switch the thing on and off when he is talking/playing.
-
Is he North Korean by any chance? They scarily force kids into learning things like this to be the best. Ive never heard of him until now but I Googled him on Yahoo and the time he would have to put in to learning all of the very complicated songs he has online would take up most of his young life. I marvel at this ability but when I see it on a kid as young as that I think it's a bit freaky.

I used to hate Duran Duran when they first came out as I thought they were pop rubbish and I was into rock and metal. Its only a few years ago that I realised that they were a great band who played their instruments really well. little did I know what pop would evolve into 😒

John Taylor has actually said that he played it with a pick. It also sounds like a pick to me with the attack
-
I thought that too. It wasn't the best video to represent the definition. I thought he was playing wildly out of time. If you look at the link below my video the information explains it much better.

Whats the most ridiculous thing you have been asked for on stage?

I was in a bar once when a band were on and everyone in my company was raving about how good they were. I pointed out that apart from the acoustic guitar and vocal it was all sampled. Some people have no clue. -

We have used that one and they still say play it again then. You just can't win. One group of girls asked us to play whisky in the jar soon because they were just going somewhere else. How to endear yourself to the band! -
Yup, sometimes less is more. The lead guitar solo in Thin Lizzy's Still In Love With You is an example of leaving "windows" that give the piece more feel than chucking hundreds of notes in which would ruin it.

What I don't understand is when they talk of drummers playing behind or in front of the beat. It's the drummer who creates the beat surely.

Im not wearing that. I can't believe that he has any talent other than being able to hold a tune.
