  1. We played at a birthday party once. Our set was mostly rock and middle of the road, with a few Scottish trad songs thrown in. The guy was delighted and asked us to play at his wedding a few months later. We started playing our tried and tested set and this guy came up and said, no, we want more traditional. Can you play that? Look, mate, we will play some later, ok? Next tune. Can you play some trad.? And so it went on after every song. A real pain in the derrière. We just didn't have enough traditional material. Eventually, we had to complain to the groom, who all this time was whizzed and totally oblivious to this scenario unfolding. he had a word and we played the rest of our set to a near empty dancefloor. The party crowd was obviously a completely different crowd to the one at the wedding. Horrible evening!
  2. I have not played live for a couple of years now, but recently I was talking to another musician and we were laughing at some of the ridiculous things we used to get asked for by punters. Can you play such and such? We don't know it mate. Yeah, you do, it goes la ,la , de dah dah etc. Can you play such and such? We don't play that. Yeah, you do, I saw you play it in here last week. We were not playing in here last week. yes, you were and so on. any more humorous, but annoying titbits from you lot?
  3. I have 14. Am I doing it wrong?
  4. It's the same when you go into a music shop. The nice friendly assistant asks " would you like to try anything out?" You pick up a nice bass, plug it in and forget everything you know. All the fancy show off bass licks are forgotten, or you have to try them umpteen times to get them right, even although yesterday, you could play it backwards!
  5. I will look on with interest. I am always looking to try new strings
  6. Go for it mate. These are lovely guitars. The necks are just amazing! A Jazz neck is fast, but these are even faster!
  7. My favourite band Is Rush. Geddy plays the most amazing basslines but equally, I have always loved AC/DC. They were the first band I really loved. Malcolm actually told Cliff and Phil that they were under no circumstances to play fancy rolls or riffs. It was all about Angus. That's because the music called for that. It was rock and roll. Good, driving, no-nonsense rock and roll. If Highway to Hell was filled with runs and fancy drumming, it would sound stinky poo. Nah, I will like the music for what it is. Fancy bass or not.
  8. Personally, I enjoy music for the whole. Not because it has a complicated or interesting bass line. Some of the best music I know has a plodding, simple bass line. It's the cross between melody and rhythm. Sometimes less is more. I have no problem playing single notes if the song asks for it.
  9. Moving isn't always the answer, not least for the reason you provided. Sometimes being at home around family or friends can be a help, although I realise you can still feel alone, even when surrounded by love.
  10. When I cleared out my spare bedroom ( music room). That was one of the things I did. I changed the strings on every bass. I have 14. Just messing about with them, all having a lovely bright tone, was a tonic in itself and felt like a new beginning!
  11. This! Not suggesting you are in this place but on a similar type of story. I once saw a programme on tv a while back and it was about people who had survived jumping from the Golden Gate bridge. This guy had tracked down the other people who had survived this feat ( 12 people) and he said EVERY one of them said the same thing. As soon as they leapt. They regretted it!
  12. I myself went through a similar issue. I lost my rotational job and was forced to go back to an ad hoc type arrangement for work. It meant I could no longer plan band rehearsals, never mind gigs, as I never knew when I would be home or away. I have a spare bedroom that I used as a music room and we used to rehearse in there. The room gradually became a store and filled up more and more with rubbish. Even if I wanted to play, I couldn't get into the room. I found myself becoming depressed due to the demands of my job. I realise depression can be brought on by many different things. Mine was never being able to plan anything in my life. Money became tight, as I would make more or less depending on how busy work was. I have had many black days. One day I decided to clear out the room and make time to play. I spent a whole weekend moving stuff, throwing stuff out, cleaning stuff etc. Once my rehearsal space was clear again, I found I had a renewed interest and I have started playing again. The job is still hard, but I find making time to play in a proper environment, has cleared my head. I still can't get time to rehearse with the band, but I can find to play myself. The very act of playing has brought me out of some black moods.

    Geddy Lee pedal

Just had it confirmed. It is to be showcased at NAMM! 🤸‍♂️
  14. We watched it last night. Superb movie. I'm not a huge Queen fan but enjoyed it immensely. I realise a lot of the facts are substituted for artistic licence, but again, it was superb and Rami deserves an Oscar!
  15. The tone on Freewill is my favourite. When you hear it isolated, it makes me happy 😋

I have a very eclectic taste in bass sounds, just as I have a very eclectic taste in music. I like many different tones, but admit to having a penchant for a dirty tone that is just right , without too much fuzz

I guess you are right, although I love his sound, I hate Marmite! 🤢

    Geddy Lee pedal

I realise this and maybe shouldn't have used that term, but as said above by Steve, a fairly flat sound, which isn't pushing too much top or bottom end

The GED 2112 is a preamp and cant power your speaker. It can, however, be used to go straight to the desk and you could use monitors. The pedal option above is what I'm interested in. I reckon the preamp version would sound ok with an amp, especially if you set everything on the amp to neutral.
  20. Moving Pictures was when Geddy started using his J bass. Tom Sawyer was recorded with the '72 Jazz that he had picked up for $200

If you watch the youtube videos of Geddy explaining why he reverted to Fenders, you would realise that he didn't set out to make his Fender sound like a Rick [sic]. He found an old '72 in a pawn shop and tried it. realised that he could get a wider range with the Fender and therefore changed his preference. As far as dreadful bass tones. Beauty is in the, in this case, ear of the beholder, so clearly its potatoes, potatos, tomatoes, tomatos. What's good for you, ain't necessarily good for me. I love Geddy's tone. I love Lemmy's tone and Entwistle had a great sound too. I don't generically love overdriven sounds, but I realise there is a place for them. This pedal can deliver far more than just giving you a Geddy sound. Its an overdrive and a damned good quality one at that.

    Geddy Lee pedal

I love his bass tone and he is my all time bass hero. Lots of others obviously think so too, as he has gear with his name on it, but I guess we can't all like the same thing. Lemmy's tone is pretty similar.
