Great song. Sorry, nothing to contribute apart from that
Got it spot on then?
Very sad news. He was an incredible musician, not just on guitar, but a superb bass player too

I know of a Bryan Adams tribute band who are sh*t! I wish Bryan would sue them!

First bass I owned was an unknown short scale horrendous effort. At some point the top horn must have been broken off because someone had made a hooked effort and stuck it on with filler, then roughly brush painted over it. The strings were old when I got it and I never changed them. I eventually saved up and bought a Hondo P bass copy. I thought it was amazing !

As much as I love rock music, I have to admit , when everyone is dancing like hell to a fast moving strip the willow, it's a great feeling to be pumping out a basic rhythm especially when you know when the key change is coming!
-
The thing is, is it English trad or Scottish ? Because there can be a difference. I found it quite hard to jam along with the Scottish trad at first , purely because I wasn't familiar with the tunes and their make up. Once you get in the swing and know the changes and keys, it's really easy. I'm not so sure about English trad right enough, but I imagine that's also easy once you know the changes. The actual physics of playing are simple but if you play a bum note, it sticks out a mile due to nature of the music. I'd say lean the tunes by ear, so that you know when there's a change. You don't need to learn the stuff note for note.
My Ashdown cabs have the velcroed fronts, the gap between the cab and grille makes an ideal pick holder. The reason I have them to hand is because I'm lazy and instead of using the same technique I used to where I'd use a pick, switch to fingers and then back - keeping the pick in my palm...I now just throw them on the floor and get another when I need it. I collect them all back up when I'm unhooking my pedals.
Better still, throw them to the fans who are eagerly watching your every move !
I'm sure people do. Thing is, when 'in concert' a bass with a bit of drive, grind etc. on it can actually sound very clean. A lot of songs that appear to have clean bass on them turn out to be quite hairy when you listen to them in isolation.
I concur. Some " clean " sounding bass when heard on its own, is pretty dirty sounding. Personally, I like to have a dirty edge to my sound when played with gusto but you can still get it to sound smooth when you tickle the strings. It's down to taste, but I think a bit of grind gives more depth.

Toseland, at the Stereo Cafe in Glasgow, supported by Colour of Noise and a surprise, Mason Hill. All three bands were great and the sound was superb. I do so much prefer small intimate venues

I can't say about the Hartke cab as I've never heard it, but my experience has been owning a 2x10 Hartke combo a while back and I hated it. It was tinny and I could never get to like it. Not saying they are all like that mind. As for the Ampeg, I couldn't recommend them enough. Just awesome. I must say , in my opinion, going for multiples of tens moves more air than a fifteen plus gives more punch. Whatever you decide, good luck and welcome to the bass club

I thought you could take the sides off wheel chairs? In which case, any bass would do. Or am I missing something ?
You'll be in San Francisco - a great city. That's my advice. I never get jet lag going to the States (even the West Coast) usually because of the buzz of being there. Only suffer when I come home.
You only get jet lag coming back. Tiredness going, but up at daft o'clock for a few days when back in Blighty

Buy a Rottwieller! Sic him onto the buggers. They might need to be very fleet footed to avoid having their legs chomped!

I just think this is the best story ever! Good on him. It's never too late to learn something new and playing a musical instrument is one of the most coveted gifts. Tell him he is a star already for siezing the day !

Keep them. It's a collection! Then again, if that's not your thing, sell them !

It's a brilliant song. We learned it at rehearsal but as I'm the singist, we never carried on as it's quite a busy bass line and singing too was a bit of an ask. Wouldn't mind trying it again maybe as a slow burner. See how I get on with doing both

I have found, certainly in our area, that live music has gone in cycles. Way back when I was too young for pubs live bands were the flavour. We used to hear stories about these bands and dreamed of doing the same. By the time we had improved enough to try it, we had to make do with church hall dances etc, as pubs were all about discos. Our band went their separate ways and myself and the guitarist , after a hiatus, started out with a duo. We really took off and pubs were crying out for live bands. Now, pubs are back to discos or piped music, with the odd live band. I'm sure live music will come back but I'm not sure if we will be young enough to carry it off by then. Gotta hope

Thank heavens! I thought this was going to be a thread about you asking if it was ok to wear it !
My dissertation was on non linear dynamical (it's every bit as sexy as it sounds!). At the time there was some academic interest in the way gossip spreads but no one had managed to find a mathematical model which could be a useful predictor of conversational patterns.
Ooh, look, a butterfly !

I was correcting the statement that 4 strings stance that the SNP are a daft political party which he has in common with " most " of the Scottish voters
-
I'd say you're stretching things to suggest Scottish/English border and sovereignty issues are racist rather than nationalist. I fully accept that Scottish nationalism is a legitimate political position but surely I'm allowed to believe it is also a daft political position? Something I seem to have in common with the majority of Scottish voters.
Didn't the SNP get a landslide victory at the last election ?
Wow, did I ever bring up a touchy subject. I had no idea. We have enough crap going on over here in the States, fighting with each other. From now on I'm just going to refer to you guys as bass players. Blue
I'm so sorry if I brought up any bad feeling Blue. I was merely pointing out that quite a lot of Americans refer to the UK or Britain as England. I never meant to get at you, I was merely correcting a common mistake as I see it. I am fiercely proud to be Scottish, but am also fiercely proud to be British.

Because I love being the heart of the song. I love that you feel the bass not just hear it. I was first drawn to the bass as a young teen cos I thought it looked cool with the big long neck compared to the common as muck guitars!
