I'll have it please!
Done.

I replaced the pickup in my MIJ Squire Precision with a Seymour Duncan 1/4er Pounder a couple of years ago and I've had the old stock pickup laying around ever since. The pole-pieces are quite rusty and have probably seen more than their fair share of beer and smoke. Buyer pays postage, or free collection from Chelmsford. First come first served (PM or reply, I'll check the timestamp).

I like my ER20 ear plugs as they seem to be most effective at cutting down the guitars and letting through a bit of bass I'll refuse to turn my bass up very far on my amp. If the guitarist can't hear me then they'll just have to turn down to compensate, I can hear myself fine through my earplugs.

Feel for you buddy. You do have an epic number of basses to choose from. I wouldn't think of it as losing a bass, but rather making space for another new bass when you're gainfully employed again. All the best luck with your job search buddy. Hopefully see you at Fr0g's 30th birthday next month?

Ooh, very classy. What's the rest of the spec then?

If I was playing someone else's bass then I'd definitely treat it with kid gloves. Putting buckle-rash on some-one else's bass you should be prepared to stump up for a repair if it's necessary. Though I do like something that a hard-gigging friend of mine said: "Guitars should be played, not polished" I love every single dent and ding in my bass. Just shows that they do spend a lot of time being played and practised rather than hanging on a wall collecting dust.
They can make a poor rig sound better.
That'll be why my Hartke HA3500 sounds phenomenal with my Aphex Bass Xciter - I leave it permanently switched on as it sounds so thin and weedy without it. My amp is probably the weakest link in my signal chain as I'm running it into a BFM Omni 10
How does the payment work out with Jon? I'm guessing he won't need one lump sum, but you could pay him a few hunner a month?
For me I paid the 40% deposit which was what he said was his normal request to get things started. I then told him that I'd be paying him a little each month to spread the cost rather than paying the balance at the end (this was to help me budget for it as I couldn't guarantee that I'd save the money and not spend it on a TC Electronic Rebelhead ). I've only got £100 left to pay, but I'm keeping that back until completion just on principle.
Not recently dude I'm just leaving him to it tbh, the more I ask the harder it'll be and the more I'll probably get on his tits! I think he's busy working on some crazy fanned fret jobby at the minute or something haha! Any update on yours fella? I'm planning on getting down to give him some more money soon and I hope (for my sake, obviously not for yours!) that yours is still there so I can see it in the flesh!!!
No update since the beginning of November, but I'm also trying not to pester him too much as I'm sure the finishing part is the most intensive and exacting bit. I've re-organised my expectations and am now not expecting to get it much before Easter next year, but it will have been worth the wait - I haven't bought any new bass gear in over a year while waiting for this bass! Have you seen the new basses on his Stock page? The new ones are looking VERY fancy. Make sure you take a camera if you're visiting to take some progress shots of your bass. Gives you something to look at while you're waiting for the build to complete. I've been promised photos more times than they've been delivered

That Bass Direct deal is a steal! I doubt you'll find many of these second hand as they were only released in the last year and I've heard nothing but praise for them. I'd love my next amp to be one of these. I wonder if it's too late to get my letter into Santa

Eek! I hope Jon can fix it. I recently plucked up the courage to take a bit of the bow out of my Warwick Thumb and over the space of a week I must have given it at least a full turn before it started to make any discernible difference after rest.

Around 1996 and about 16 years old. Open mic night and my mum and uncle were in the crowd (was too young to drive myself there). All I remember was that I was very nervous and sweaty.

I started playing bass at the same time I was listening to the Ten album. So he gets full thumbs up from me!

Holy Cow! That's gorgeous! Congratulations
Not so for Corvettes, I'm afraid. I've a Bubinga Corvette with the passive silver-script 'Dynamic Correction' pickups and active 2-band pre-amp and I've just taken the battery out and it works fine with the volume knob pulled up in to the passive position.
+1. I believe most Warwicks are actually equipped with both active pickups and active electrics. The push/pull switch only disengages the active electrics, leaving the pickups running on the battery. When the battery is dying I can pull the switch to get an extra bit of life out of it but when the charge has completely gone my Thumb BO is silent. The MEC pickups with silver writing are the passive ones. The ones with gold (or red apparently) writing are active and won't work without any battery, regardless of the push/pull switch.

The bolt-on Thumbs are longer in the body than the through-neck equivalents. This means that they do balance far better and neck dive is hardly an issue. If you read people complaining about neck dive on a Warwick Thumb you can guarantee they're talking about the through-neck version. I LOVE my Warwick Thumb BO 4 and will take it to my grave. This is an absolute steal, you won't need luck selling this as you're practically giving it away!
-
For Christmas I'd like plenty of gigs! Failing that I wouldn't mind unwrapping my custom Shuker (more likely to be an Easter present), or a TC Electronics Rebel Head.
-
That Thumb 5 is lush. Looks like it's made out of marble. Congrats.

Warwick can make a beautiful bass, and that is certainly one of them. Can really tell how proud you are of it from those photos and rightly so!
That's a shame dude, that'll over a year since you started the thread
No shame at all! I've been paying off the balance in small amounts each month and having the build last at least 12 months has made the whole thing far more affordable than spending the equivalent amount in a shop I find it strangely comforting that Jon is taking such time and effort in getting the finish just right. One thing I've noticed with his basses is that each new generation seems to get better and better finishes (comparing his early stuff to Dan's Doodle, and then the new models on his Stock page). A bass with this spec MUST be worth waiting for

Got an email from Jon last night. Sounds like mine is about 3rd in his 'finishing queue'. I should get some photos soon showing off the birds-eye maple fingerboard (only photos I've got of this so far have it covered by masking tape). I'm hoping that it will be finished early next year.
-
I've had the CD version for a few years and use it all the time. Though I do spend a lot of time burning mp3s to CDs in order to use the songs. I'm sure the mp3 version would cut out the middleman. If my Tascam was to break irreparably (the lid is already held on with gaffa tape) then I would replace it with the mp3 version without hesitation. It's a great practice tool and pretty much negates the need for a home practice amp.
any closer to being completed????
I don't know as I haven't heard anything since my last email from Jon on the 1st September. I'm planning on giving him a call sometime next week to find out if there's been any progress. I was secretly hoping that this would be complete by the end of this month as a 12 month build sounded like a nice round number. If the bass is just resting at the moment then I'll hope to get it before Christmas, if there's still work to do then I'm not going to hold out getting it before next year.
That bass looks great and if my six stringed necks are anything to go by you,ll love playing it.
Thanks. I loved your twin Rick-a-likes when I saw the photos. The white finish on the back of them even had me thinking of changing the spec of my own bass from black to white gloss, but I decided to stick to my original plan in the end. I spent ages trying to find some way to tell your two basses apart. A bit like a spot-the-difference competition. Did Jon even cut the facing woods from the same piece? I can't even find any difference in the gorgeous wood grains.
