Aw don't feel guilty - that's just me throwing my toys out the pram lol! Thanks for the feed back - I do particularly struggle with Walk this Way as I find it too difficult to play on open strings so I play the "triplet" riff hammering on the E string jumping up to the E on the A string - but I really do struggle with it - it's very hit and miss so I'm always tense when I play it!! I think that tends to make me rush - I'm trying to get to the end with as least mistakes as poss! I enjoy Mama Told Me more than the others as it swings along - which of course for me as a jazz saxophonist I find I'm more in my comfort zone and it just feels more relaxed and laid back How long have you been playing? - Thanks again and I will look out for your recordings and definitely reciprocate the feedback
Yeah, you can tell that Mama Told me suited you better. Regarding Walk This Way, I would chat it through with the band about how you play it as a group. All of you listen to the original together and talk through the tempo and the feel, especially you and the drummer. I have been playing for about 2 years and interestingly enough I am a saxophonist as well, though it rarely ventures out of the box these days. My band is a fairly heavy rock covers 5 piece just getting to the point of gigging.

I feel a bit guilty now as I listened to the tracks when you first put them up but didnt comment! Glad you have put them back up now though. I have had another listen and I would echo the couple of comments that have already been made about it feeling a little rushed. In particular I think that Walk this Way is just being played too fast to capture the feel and groove of the original but I wouldnt say that it is your bass playing that is driving that just that the whole thing needs to be slowed down a bit and as someone else has said trying to play just behind the beat will help with this. Actually I think you achieve this much better in Mama Told Me where the bass line is a bit more off the beat and to me grooves much better than the other two - really enjoyed that one. Keep it up is all I can say. I am also a late starter on bass and my band will be recording our first demos in the next few weeks so you may well get the opportunity to give some feedback on my playing too if I am brave enough to post it on here!!

Loads of used bass strings - any use to anyone? - ALL GONE!
RickyV replied to Gamble's topic in Completed Items
Hi. Are all the strings the same make/type? Would be interested to know what they are and what type of bass they are cut for? Cheers PM'd also. -
Just dug all my old vinyl out of the loft and found an Ike Quebec album that I had forgotten about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQKC5jL_0lQ

The only picture of me with bass in hand in existence. And yes, our singer has got a bloody music stand!!!! -
And this would seem to be the right Scandinavian moment to remind our readers of this:
That is a joy. And wierdly your avatar moves in time to the tractor as well which just adds another dimension to the whole thing!! Excellent.
Thanks BeeBop. Being a complete novice helps! I would think that there are more books relating to 4 strings than 5, but please correct my assumptions! I will certainly take a lesson or two but is there any real reason to learn 5 string rather than 4?
I would definitely start with a 4 string. All your learning resources out there are going to be based on 4 string basses. Get the basics right first is what I would say. I am relatively new to this as well tho so what do I know?!!

YES A marvelous and beautiful thing to do!

Hi and welcome. You couldn't have come to a better place! I am a sax player too and have been playing bass for about 2 years now. For your first bass, it really does depend on your budget. Various manufacturers mentioned already and I would personally give Yamaha a close look as they make really good quality basses throughout the range. Also worth looking at the Harley Benton basses on the Thomann.de website. The vintage series J basses are seriously good value for money at only £100. As for learning, well I am entirely self taught through books (the Hal Leonard Complete Bass Method is a good starter); online resourses such as Talkingbass.net and Scottsbasslessons.com and Youtube. Your existing musical knowledge will certainly help. Your learning style might suit getting a decent bass tutor for one to one lessons though so have a look around locally if thats your bag. Most of all though have fun doing it. Good luck.

Hmmm, Summer of 69 was one of the first songs my fledgling covers band learnt as a quick and easy win but this has quickly been discarded without ever having gigged it as a song we cant stand any more! I point blank refuse to allow Sex on Fire on the set list. Fortunately there has been no argument on this point!
-
My goal last year was to start playing with other people with a view to gigging at some point. 5 piece covers band now established and our first public performance in the bag. The plan for 2016 is to establish ourselves as a regular gigging band. Other than that, improve my theory and sight-reading on bass.

Sad times. The Specials were a huge part of my youth and I was so glad I got to see them on their reunion tour a few years ago. Probably the most fun I have ever had at a gig.

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
RickyV replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
I think I've found the problem - see the attached photo. Side fret dots should be entirely on the rosewood according to a photo on Thomann's site - but on my bass they are overlapping the maple. Could this really be the reason for 'deko' status?
I have a deko jazz with fret dots entirely in the rosewood but my deko P has them overlapping. I hadn't even noticed the difference until you mentioned yours!! Either way, a minor detail! -
God help me - think I'm starting to like jazz!!!

Ok, there have been a few classical offerings so far and here's mine. 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis' by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Hairs on the back of my neck every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U6sWqfrnTs -
Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
RickyV replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
I've done a search, but it appears that Entwistle P and J pickups are only available for four string basses, not five string basses
That's a shame as they are great value for the money. -
I've gone through the same thoughts as you about the PJ5. I may chuck in new pickups some time next year.
I think the standard HB pickups are generally weak. I am going to change the pick up in my standard series P. Sounds nice enough but just needs a bit more ooomph! Entwistle PBX or PBXN will do the job fine. Put Entwistles in my standard J as well. -
Role of the bass player in a one-guitar band?
RickyV replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I have gone the other way from a single guitar band to a 2 guitar band. Also playing classic and other rock. I am doing nothing different to what I was before. Just play the bass line. Let your now single guitarist play with pedals! -
Definitely something Maruszczyk shaped. Either a Jake or an Elwood but with so many different custom options available I know not which way to turn!
