Ibanez SR305?
What do you guys think of it? It seems like the cheapest decent 5-string you can get. Any advice on buying cheap/second hand, issues with the bass, anything? I will try one out as soon as there is one in a shop somewhere, and tell you about that.
Soundgears are good value, though if it was me I would hold out till I had enough for an SR505BM, which is a cracking bass for the money.
2.
Do the streamer stage 1s have less chunky necks then? If there are models in Warwick's range like this then I would be happy to consider!
As Ben said, they can be found. I think the pre 2000 wenge-necked versions were often slimmer, but it does vary. The other reason I suggested the SSI is that the longer horn should give a much easier balance (less dive), which should in turn help your left wrist.
3. "I've got stubby fingers so I think the combination of this & the thick neck is what is causing the problem." They can be funny buggers to play. They have to be strapped quite high to make them sit still. I'm not complaining though - it's given me the impetus to switch my right hand to the floating thumb technique to reduce wrist bend. Yep, the Thumbs have managed to force me to improve my technique. They're still heavy b@stards though. Anyway, good luck with the sale. Would be tempted myself but my bass spending is done for the forseeable future. Have a bump. As for price (which I think is fair), you could just take it out of the equation and aim for a straight swap for a Streamer Stage 1.....
4.
Hey all, thank you for all the suggestions. I've decided to go with a Spector Legend 5 in Dark Cherry. Again, thanks for all the input, now I just have to sell my damn iMac so I can afford to buy it!
Great choice on the Spector, but do bear in mind that you could get a second hand ReBop for the money you have.
5. "I could get a Warwick Rockbass Corvette 5 for £400 too." Seriously, it's a buyers second-hand market at the moment - you can get a proper Warwick 5 string for less than £500! Don't go spending £400 on a Rockbass. Keep an eye out for Streamer LXs and Streamer Pro Ms. Also the cheaper Warwick Streamer Stds (pre-Rockbass, made in 2000) can be had for around £200. Spectors can also be had at great prices. MythSte already posted this:- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=30719 (The price is seems fair to me). There's also a Lakland Skyline 55-01 going for £400 here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31960 In short, you're spoilt for choice with £400 in your pocket in the current climate.
6. I'd always pick a Sadowsky/Lakland over a Fender if I had money to burn. Fender's low to mid price stuff is great value, but their high end stuff doesn't feel much different to me. The nicest Fenders I've played recently have been Squier VMJs!
7. You can buy official Warwick pre-amps from their site (www.warwick.de). As these are official parts they shouldn't affect value and you'll have no need to do any new routing as they do various combinations of stacked knobs.
8. Ben's old Thumb Bass now resides with me. I have two Thumbs to go with my Std instead of two Streamers. Nice collection. ^_^
9. Agghh, damn it. I'm not usually a Fender type but I love this. However, as I said on another thread, no more basses this year. Have a bump instead.

Colours!

Natural. But I guess that's hardly a suprise judging by my avatar pic. ^_^

Thumb Rests

Thumbrests still have a place in the modern world! I had one made for my Streamer Std. I'd strung the bass with flats and decided that I wanted a rest that was level with my pickup so I could play at the neck. Here's the result... 12. Go for it, CrazyKiwi - it has to be fate.....
13. Never heard of these but it's a 7 string through neck with Bubinga wings for £369 BIN...... 15.
+1 to that. I played the natural 70s style one at the bottom of this link when I was Jon's workshop last. Amazing quality, handbuilt, and looks stunning - all for £650! http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/stock.htm
Wow. £650's a bit of a steal for those...
16. Do it.
17.
Would like to know how people have got on with the standard vs deluxe though.
The Deluxe will be active (if I remember correctly), so will sound more "hi-fi". It will also be made from nicer wood. As for the overall difference in playability/build quality I personally haven't found a great deal of difference, but bear in mind I've only been noodling in shops with these things.... For me a Fender should be a solid Workhorse, so I'd veer towards a Standard, but if this is to be a special present then you might want the extras. There's a thread on this subject here (assuming it's not your thread): http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=401571
Was considering a Sadowsky Metro or a Sandberg as alternatives.
I guess I'm one of those who thinks these are far superior (and much more befitting a special treat). Again, just my opinion. Cheers,
18.
No Xmas for John Queays by the Fall.
Aghhh! Beat me to it!
19. "No Christmas for John Quays" by The Fall. Always puts me in the festive spirit
20. For the money I would much sooner consider a Sadowsky Metro, but that's just my opinion!
21. MIA, MIM, MIJ..... Just get a second hand Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub and be done with it.
22. For me it was a straight fusion of Punk, Electronica and Funk/Disco. As others have mentioned, the likes of Bowie and Roxy Music were already playing around with these in the 70s before Duran Duran appeared.
23. ERB = Egg slicer. (Just because I can't play them, you understand.)
24. Got to be worth £200 of someone's hard earned. Have a bump.
25.
+1, but I don’t mean that in a bad or derogative kind of way........
Oh don't get we wrong, I like the look of Fenders too (esp. natural finish with a black scratch plate), I just find them pretty weird to play for some reason. Perhaps I'm just not "cool" enough, either!
