1.
Says it all, what a load of wa*k. Of all the places to do a PA with a bass guitar... OK he wants to hit the youth market, fair enough, but how many of them shop at Selfridges? Despite my respect for his playing and what he and the band have given to music, I can't help thinking he's a sad parody of what he used to be, and, arguably, what he should still be. Lte's face it, Squier are doing a far better job for almost half the price. I rate Flea as one of my major influences, but my message to him now is this; have the balls to show up at a decent music shop, avoid the corporate crap and hang with real musos and you might sleep better at night and make better music than has been the case recently (did you really enjoy playing the sh*t you put down on stadium Arcadium)? You've got enough cash not to need to rip off the most naive sector of the market with sh*t instruments, so get back to MM or Modulus and develop a decent instrument. I'd love the idea of the economy Flea Bass if it wasn't a) too expensive, apparently not very good, and c) marketed through w*nk shops like Selfridges. C
Probably better than turning up for gigs pissed , if at all, and then also forgetting that you sold your bass so you could get pissed in the first place, then falling off the edge of the world and then dying a pointless death. On second thoughts maybe not. On reading this thread I have come to two conclusions. Fact is stranger than fiction and my prices are going up....
 2.
Yes, as I understand it (not been on it myself other than to look at the log-in page). I believe it features a number of BC exiles and/or persona non grata (eg Bass Ferret) thus there is some sort of rivalry that gets cited occasionally when there is a controversy on this site.
as Harry Hill would say......."fight" seeing as I am not an exile I must be a 'persona non grata' ? I wish I was as far as HMRC was concerned..... Bastards...... The HMRC that is...
 3.
Just Lucky.....
What he said.... Plus people generally go with the flow to 'fit in' and Living Color , Fishbone etc have never been 'fashionable' although both are much superior to RCHPM whatever they is, or summat or nothing, shutup....
 4.
i guess if you grow up with your parents running your local church you get in the habit of being charitable, or/and tithing. I heard that 10% of everything they earn they give away. surely you can't really knock that? It's better than the rock and roll spending your profits up your nose
What he said.... Although no fan of Coldplay I think it is a very noble gesture irrespective of what people may think the motives are. We live in a greed ridden society with massive social injustice and it is good to see those who have, spreading the wealth about abit. City bankers would do well to take note.....I wonder how much of their wealth goes to charity ?
 5.
And possibly more interesting, but somewhat more of a project - a long-scale slot-headstock example: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=170414421937 Longscale EB copies are very uncommon, and this is probably a Fujigen, possibly originally an Antoria or - amazingly - an Ibanez. Guy won't post so this may be of interest if you're in the SW. J.
I've got my eye on this one as I will be a few miles from Wedmore in a week or so, looks interesting or would do with a nice deep red stain !
 6. Unfortunately , (and I will take this opportunity to thank anyone who has reviewed my basses) I think reviews are pointless unless they are objective, written with a depth of understanding and from someone who has no prejudice and plenty of experience. Musical instruments and gear are reviewed subjectively and personal likes and dislikes enter the equation. It applies especially here on basschat as there are those who wouldn't wear anything other than a Fender round their neck irrespective of whether other basses are better value, sound better or look better (in the reviewers opinion) and there lies the problem. With regard to Alex , he has put a lot of effort into his business and is producing something different without the backing of a corporation or by getting his cabs made in China for peanuts. I think the original gripe over his cab was satisfied amicably and how many other producers would just say " if you are not happy you can have a full refund" It is pointless discussing this any further in this thread and this should be put to bed with any reviews of his gear going in the review forum written by people who have actually used his gear. You can test a washing machine objectively by how clean your clothes come out of it but with instruments and gear its always going to be subjectively, so on many levels what one person says will be absolutely pointless to another , again I cite the Fender Good = Fender Bad debate. It seems a typically British thing to knock the little guy and put down innovation, ideas and enthusiasm. Products from small producers may not be perfect (price / quality etc ) but the products come from a passion and desire to improve and innovate and with time and encouragement the products will improve and come down in price. Otherwise we may all as well just give in now and all you will be able to buy is American branded gear made in the far east by someone who doesn't give a sh*t....
 7. The world has its scum all right , sorry to hear you were a victim Jack Nice bass .....I should know , worth every penny and more especially with the tone styler fitted.
 8.
My God! I've finally found someone other than myself with an S7B! Are there others out there?
Just you and me and a Guy in America to my knowledge.....get a photo of it in the Bass Porn thread...there are fewer of the S7B's than 1948 Fender Precisions......
 9.
I never knew anything about these until i saw them hanging in the less than inspiring music shop in Selfridges... my first thoughts i'll be honest were "what the hell is that monstrosity" I asked the girl to have a quick go on one and she plugged me through a little Hartke practice amp, so i'll have to be compassionate when i come to discussing the sound. The finish of the bass is terrible, if anything unacceptable, the neck felt unfinished, i swear there were rough patches all the way up the neck, the frets were razor sharp on the edges, the strings were at least 3-4mm off the fretboard, as discussed earlier the paint job was so so sloppy, it looked thick and it filled up the neck pocket where the wood didn't, now some of these things could be consequence of a poor shop set up but check out the website, Flea and his bass companies manifesto is that no bass leaves the factory unless its perfectly setup and ready to play...... hmm. The pickup sounded very weak, not alot of output at all, crackly pots, slack tuners, cheap bridge.... oh dear... The bass was however incredibly light, so people who prefer lighter basses might want to check it out, but apart from that, as someone before me stated for £400 they're having a laugh and playing massively on the name. Even if this bass was sub £200 it would be a joke compared to a Squier or Warwick Rockbass.

Sharp frets are the worst. Can you imagine some poor young kid after a few hours of playing? Disgraceful.

For the price they're asking you could get 3 much better basses!

I think i read that flea helped to design this bass. His goal was to develop a bass that will inspire young kids to pick up the instrument. Hence the bright colours. If this is true then flea should never design anything else... Ever.

I have to confess I was drawn towards and touched one in Denmark Street last Friday morning - I reached forth and laid a finger on the fretboard and recoiled with an instant "ugh" - it felt nasty and I wasted no time in retreating.

I was just thinking on the same lines... He's a great fun player to watch but is his bass as crap as the ones I looked at and played??
Well folks looks like you are all wrong ! And it is now official ....Guitar and Bass magazine has just voted it best sub £500.00 bass and that was with a list price of £440.00... I think it says more about the magazine than the bass , and I for one will never read , let alone buy the said magazine again. I find it really sad (bearing in mind newcomers to bass would look to such a magazine or indeed parents looking to buy a bass for an offspring for christmas) that they have the audacity to print such utter crap......obviously they must get a lot of advertising revenue from the distributor, shame on them
 10. Eden Precision necks from Hong Kong You could use them as pit props.....ask Clarky.
 11.
any strings over 15 quid, a complete con * Ampeg bass gear (three tone settings rock, rock and sh*te) * gay basses like jaydee, status wal ect * most high end bass cabs, you can have one built just as good for less than half the price * Six string basses, for god sake get a guitar * plectrum bass playing, clunk click clunk * Rickenbackers, the worst sounding basses ever invented
I think this is great....you can't ask someone their preferences and when they give them attack them ? otherwise what's the point of expressing an opinion if we were all meant to like the same things. I've used some 'high end' gear and wondered what the attraction was but as a builder it would be churlish for me to mention those brands.....
 12.
Why thank you...your tab shows 3 notes-superb!, Well, i read some crap on this thread to be honest. So some tongue in cheek philosophy underpinned by a real message occasionally is my way....did far too much debate at uni and found that all great debates end back where it started albeit with decisions, plans and answers oh and more debate......for this debate i seem to see its just many opinions but fundamentally its all BASS right?....even jumping on the strings like Jaco did is playing on the bass i feel! I am of course still half asleep and talking bollocks as usual
Indeed......(not the bollox bit ) I think having to explain why something is good in some ways belittles it. I have never been a fan of slap, double thumbing whatever you want to call it. Doesn't mean it hasn't got a place for others to enjoy. For me dance music has done more for bass than many 'virtuoso' players who churn out bass for bassists and then only of a certain ilk. Nobody has mentioned Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Propellerheads, Armand Van Helden, MAW, Lamb, Full Intention, all at the forefront of pushing bass in music. So what if some of them use sequencers / keyboards its all lower register stuff. Good bass doesn't necessary have to be 5 strings on a fancy build played at 200 notes a minute. Bass is a wide church from dub to self indulgent w***ing ? As for its future it will carry on in the way it has done over the last decade. Thankfully more up front in the mix now thanks to dance and indie bands pushing it up there, not some soloist or trade show fiddler, they only appeal to other bassists. I know I'll get some flak from this but just ask any non bassist to name 5 bass players ? The replies you are likely to get are 'Sting' , 'that guy in Level 42' , 'Him in Rush', 'Paul McCartney' , and not forgetting 'Sid Viscious' From a younger audience maybe 'Mike Dirnt' , 'Flea' I think the question is a little like asking 'where is music ?' Its where you want it to be.
 13.
I/we love bass...... i personally love playing 3-4 notes of a real phat speaker rumbling belly popping dub that warbles a riddim that hypnotises the audience (oh...and the band) and nobody knows what it is that's gripping them and holding them together....that is until it drops out...then the riddim comes back in...that be the bass that gets ya together again and rinse up the pum pum. And well.... i equally love the fact that the likes of the mighty Jaco, Bootsy etc have taken the bass out there to space and back again...there is plenty of room for bass in space (there are no walls behind the sky )....dig - thanks god people get out there to space (talented!)...i wish i was an astronaut and not a space cadet (maybe practice) - I'll stick with my earthy 3-4 notes....that's my love and happy medium after all. As a random afterthought didn't that Whitened Stripes band have no bass player?...yet there biggest tune was that one with the b-line...go figure. Bass falls on those who feel it...he who knows it feels it...amen & more wine, one love
Well said that man --------------------- --------------------- ---3--5-55-3-5---- -5-------------------
 14.
I think we all understand the difference between music with a good bass guitar part and music for trade shows, right? Still, those trade show techniques are worth learning if you aspire to play at trade shows. Just don't do them in your band or they'll all think you're a twat.
+1 to that... Like I always say " if you are not in the groove you are w***ing"
 15.
What do you think this is E-bay..... Paul is probobly aware why I haven't had pop at this, but normally he would have had friction burns from the speed I would have grabbed this.
Hi Terry its a nice bass, quite surprised me with its tone actually. There is always another mate....
 16. Well it looks like Grumble is on his way to a divorce.....Basschat is proud of you...
 17.
Ok I'm a sucker for oddities, I will start things off. 80 sovs and I will pick up so any monies saved can be distributed accordingly. C'mon people, save the Grumble from a moment of madness (and possible divorce courts), stick a higher one in !
Nice one Grumble, you won't be dissapointed , I have been playing this tonight and almost decided to keep it but I am a man of my word. Here are a few loops I have just put together alternating between the neck and bridge pickups. It is through a Line 6 GX USB interface into POD Farm. Emulated Eden Amp into an 8 x 10 with a little bit of reverb to liven it up. Put the headphones on this bass growls....
 18. Hi Alex if you can fit me in I would be happy to pick the cab up from Josh in Preston and meet up with guyl from Manchester or drop it off for them as I am halfway between them in Chorley. I won't get chance to gig it so would be happy mid-week for just a night to give it a thrashing.... cheers...Paul
 19. Come on folks this has to be worth £60 and a small donation to the site....it does sound rather nice (even if it doesn't look it)
 20.
Hey peeps, So all excited and about to go bass testing. Messed around a bit many years ago but I'm pretty much a new starter and will be playing in church as soon as my little fat fingers garner the necessary skills. Looking for something with a narrow neck and pretty lightweight for around £300-£400 squids. a couple of people mentioned the Ibanez SR series. Was wondering if anyone has any views? Any pointers / experience much appreciated Ta muchly
Buy what you are comfortable with whether that is a short scale , standard scale or longer. One thing that is overlooked is that it is not necessarily the scale length but where the neck is in relation to your body. Some bass designs push the neck away from you and others bring it closer. It is this relationship that is important. Unless a bass is ergonomically designed (most aren't) the only way to try this is to put one round your neck and see if it is comfortable. Big fat necks are fine if you don't need to reach too far, and conversely skinny necks can be a pain if you end up with your fretting hand along way from your body. Bring into this technique, where you like to play on the neck and how low you sling your bass it becomes obvious that there is no golden rule and the best bet is to go with what is comfortable in use. Paul
 21.
Nice er, knobs...
80's vintage no less....
 22. Shameless bump.....well it is for a good cause.
 23. Due to a small misunderstanding this auction is being re-run, please read the whole description before grabbing your cheque book......... I put this bass together on Sunday from gear I had collecting dust in my workshop. Body is bass wood and polycoated. It was originally destined to be a twin humbucker but I had a bit come loose in my router which tore up a cavity. The Cavities have been filled and they are shielded. (You will not be able to fit standard pickups as the surrounds cover the humbucker size cutouts) On the rear of the bass you can see where the wood is jointed through the poly coating., Finish is superb with a couple of very minor scatches The pickups are Artec Giovanni Vintage Jazz 7.0k bridge units set in maple / mahogany surrounds (neck offcuts) to cover the humbucker cutouts. They are non adjustable. Bent tin bridge is as new (donated by a fellow basschatter) with good chrome and does the job. Twin volume controls have brass knobs of 80's vintage. The Control Cavity was routed for fully active 3 band eq and twin batteries (hence the size) it is shielded and has a 'bling' mirrored cover. Neck is new, maple, Jazz dimensions with some good quality unbranded chrome tuners that function perfectly. It is strung with some roundwound 95 / 40's (Rotosounds I think ?) It will have a string tree fitted in Brass. It sounds superb with a wide range of tones from a burpy EBO type sound from the neck pup to a very Fender Jaco sound with the bridge pup. Please read this bit carefully..... The neck is straight and has very little relief even with the adjuster backed off completely. This may be improved with using heavy gauge strings ie. 110's Action is approx 2.5 - 3.0mm at the 12th with a little fingerboard buzz when playing around where the 5th fret would be on the D and G strings if you really dig in. If you took it up 1mm or so this would go completely.....however it sounds great and if you want to learn fretless or add one to your arsenal its a good bass. Now here is the deal......I want offers put up here in the thread over £60.00. The £60.00 covers me for insured courier to you (UK only) and the fact I spent my Sunday putting it together (and getting flak from Mrs Prosebass a we were supposed to go out for the day) All monies over £60.00 will be donated to basschat so get some bids up. Bids to be in by Midnight 24.00 Friday the 6th Nov Let the bidding commence....
 24.
Your kitchen is SOOOOO similar to mine... I'll go for 200
Well folks thanks for all the interest and it looks like K-sad put the highest bid in with his very generous £200.00 So K-sad you have done basschat proud so please get in touch via a PM so I can get the bass to the couriers for you, I have found a string tree I can fit and will bump the action up a touch so you can play it straight from the box...... Thanks again to all especially Happy Jack for his generous offer (although you would be better putting that money into one of those lightweight travel bass thingies ) Paul
